Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Thank you for stopping by to see me!  Please fill out an application to set up  a private meeting.  Keep checking back for upcoming events I will be attending!       Hi there! My name is Dice, and I’m a 10-month-old Shorkie Poo weighing in at 8.5 lbs of pure delight! I have lots of personality and am a happy, playful, and energetic little guy. But don’t worry—I also love taking several naps and enjoy some quiet time each day. I have a blast playing with my small squeaky toys, balls, and chew bones. Sometimes I even like to watch TV, especially if there’s a dog or a crying baby on screen! I’m almost potty trained as long as I’m on a good schedule, and I’m working on my crate training. I do bark when left alone, but my people don’t know how long I keep it up so a home with shared walls isn’t a good idea. I don’t need a fenced yard since I’m getting the hang of leash training. I’ve only been outside in a fenced yard so far, so I’ll need some practice walking on a leash. I’m a smart boy and am learning commands like 'Come,' 'Leave it,' and 'Kennel.' I’m great with smaller dogs but tend to bark at the big dogs in the neighbor’s yard because they scare me, and I run back to the deck. I don’t need to be placed in a home with another dog as long as my humans are home most of the time. A few more fun things about me: I know how to go up and down steps, and I can jump up on furniture or couch level. Like most puppies, I’m starting to chew on things, so keep an eye on your shoes and envelopes! If you offer me a treat, I’ll stand on my hind legs and turn in a circle—how’s that for a trick? I’d make a great addition to a loving home, and I promise to bring lots of joy and fun to your life. Could you be my forever family? Love, Dice *I’m a growing puppy and I have not yet had a lot of experience with crates, kids or cats and I might bark if something alarms me, but I really love to learn and hoping for a family who will take me to a basic obedience class to continue to help me build confidence and dog skills. Ideally my forever home would need to be home during the day to help me with my potty training and not leave me for breaks longer than 3 - 4 hours. If you are looking for a best friend, please fill out the puppy application. The more info you include on the application the better so I can find a good match for my forever home. Get your toy box ready! **Obedience classes are required when adopting this puppy from Underdog Rescue. Many of our puppies have a mama who was not properly socialized before coming to Underdog Rescue. Since coming to Underdog, this puppy has been in a socialized and loving home, but that needs to be continued with its Adopters. Training classes teach puppies the ins and outs of being a pet while creating a bond with their new Adopter. Obedience classes are key to creating a relationship with your puppy while having it be a happy and successful member of society. Proof of Obedience Class registration is required for this puppy before adoptions can be finalized. If you would like some suggestions, we would be happy to send some trainers who have experience with Underdog Rescue, but a Basic Obedience class in your area should work! Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. This will be at the adopter’s expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non-shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit. Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.  T his puppy requires an application fee. This fee must be paid within 24 hours or your application will be considered void.  We will not review or contact applicants that have not completed the payment portion.   Puppy Applications will be responded to within 5 business days, after receipt of the application fee.  Please understand that paying the fee does not guarantee you will be approved to adopt the puppy. Our goal is place puppies in homes that are suited for their individual needs. You may be willing and able to provide a great home, but if it doesn’t meet the specific needs of the puppy, we will not approve your application. We accept applications for puppies until we have a candidate that meets all of the requirements needed for the specific puppy and they have been contacted to review the adoption process as well as agree to all of the terms to move forward. ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there*** Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.If you have other questions about me you can email Underdog Rescue at <inquiries@underdogrescuemn.com> ADOPTION EVENTS:      Adoption events are updated at the top of each dogs animals' as their foster home signs up. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. If an event is not listed within their bio above, the animal is not planning to attend.  Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. We recommend filling out an application and we will set up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved. ADOPTION PROCEDURE: The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website: http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/adoptionprocess/   Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN.  All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions. FOSTER CARE: All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption, but each bio is written by the foster as they see them, in their home. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality, but it cannot be guaranteed. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves in time and with patience.  If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website  www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications  and fill out a foster application. NUTRITION: Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets.  All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet.  All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal. YOU CAN HELP: Not able to foster or adopt right now? Please consider sponsoring an Underdog. Your donation will help us buy dog food and pay for medical costs. Story
Hi! I'm Bernard! I'm from Kentucky! From his foster: Bernard is an absolute bundle of love and joy. He has a few quirks, but wants nothing more than to love on and please his humans! Three words to describe Bernard: goofy, puppylike, adoring. His hobbies include: Zoomies across the house, diving after toys, rolling around on his back, snuggling as close to you as possible. For as much puppy-like energy as he has in the house, he prefers sniffing to running when we're on walks. His special talents: Bernard's ears flip between sticking up and flopping over! His bed manners are impeccable- he sleeps on the foot of our bed through the night. He is a quick learner who is eager to please, so positive reinforcement training has been progressing very quickly. Things Bernard's people should know: He has shown some early signs of separation anxiety. He has also shown fear reactions which indicate that he will require ongoing training for confidence building and trust building with his new family. Are you looking for a goofy sidekick who will give you every ounce of love in his body?

Meet Hershey! Purebred Shih Tzu. Hershey LOVES everyone he meets and loves kids even more and is partial to men, but still adores all he meets. He turned 1 on May 20, 2024. He gets along well with other dogs. Mostly house trained, but that can change from home to home so be prepared to work on this. He doesn’t chew on anything except his toys, but if you give him a toy with stuffing, he will tear it to pieces. He loves to sleep in the bed, but will sleep on a dog bed too. Lovessss his pup cups.

Story
Libby is a sweet Shih Tzu who came to us from a breeder in a southern state who was downsizing his operation and surrendered several dogs to Second Chance. She is 9 years old and weighs 18 pounds. Libby is shy with people although has never growled or snapped in her foster home, or at the Minnesota vet where she was examined. In her first month in her foster home, she did not want much to do with people, but in the last few months she has become much more affectionate with her foster mom and follows her around the house. She loves having her ears rubbed. Her foster dad and Libby just ignore each other and all is fine. Libby has made good progress and has the potential to continue learning to trust and interact with people, but it will take time and patience in a new home. When Libby is afraid of someone, she dashes away from the person or runs into her crate (her “safe place”). Libby is as cute as can be with her cream-colored fur with tan patches, and golden-brown eyes. For a successful adoption, she needs someone with previous experience with shy/fearful dogs who has at least one other social small dog in the home, and will not have to leave her for long hours. Her placement should be in an adult-only home with a female as the primary caregiver. If guests come over, she should be confined to her crate where she feels safe. Libby’s current foster home includes three other small-medium dogs. Libby gets along fine with them. She will follow the resident dogs around but doesn’t try to initiate play. No cat experience to our knowledge but she is so gentle that she would probably get along fine with a dog-savvy cat. No interest in toys but loves to chew on dog bones or Kongs, especially if they have a smear of peanut butter in them. When Libby’s fosters are gone (usually for a max of four hours) she has a large wire crate that she stays in. She initially slept in her crate at night but now has graduated to sleeping by her foster mom’s feet on the bed. Her crate, dog bed and blankets will come with her to her new home. Libby needs a single-family home with a very secure fenced yard. Until she learns the new routine and yard, she should be taken out with a leash attached to her so she can run off and potty and then be caught to come back in the house. Libby goes on daily leash walks with one of the resident dogs and does great. She absolutely loves going on walks! She passes other people and dogs just fine and then turns around to watch them. Libby had some pee accidents when she first came into her foster home. She was taken to the vet to see if there was a medical problem, such as bladder stones. An x-ray indicated there were no bladder stones. The vet recommended a change to her diet (adding canned pumpkin) which solved the problem! Nervousness in moving to a new home may cause some temporary regression in housebreaking but her foster mom will provide tips on how to resolve any issues. Libby is extremely food motivated – the only time she barks is when she sees her full food bowl or treats coming her way and she jumps and barks in excitement. The food motivation will be helpful in getting her acclimated to her new home and bonded to her new owner. Shih Tzus don't shed much because they have hair instead of fur. She has been to the groomer to have her nails trimmed and a quick trim around her face and did fine. Be sure you can afford the cost of a professional grooming 2-3 times per year. She cooperates well for a bath. She has been spayed and had a dental cleaning in December of 2023 (no teeth were extracted). She is current on distemper, rabies, and Bordetella vaccinations. Libby’s heartworm & tick panel were negative and she is on heartworm preventives as well as Frontline for fleas/ticks. Her microchip is registered to Second Chance. Transitioning into a new home will possibly be just like starting over again for Libby. She needs a person that is familiar with dogs that want to trust people, but are not quite ready to do that yet, and a person that can keep her safe. Again, Libby’s adoption requirements include a secure fenced yard, an adult female as primary caregiver, no young children and at least one other small-medium social dog in the home to be her friend and mentor. Adopters must be willing and able to care for Libby for another 7-8 years as these little dogs can live a long life! A vet reference and home visit will be required so adopters must live within 40 miles of the Twin Cities metro area. For the right home, Libby is truly a little treasure. Her adoption fee is $300. If you have any questions, or if you want to meet Libby, please call 651-771-5662.

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. **Bonded with Mae Mae***This animal is a part of our “Seniors for Seniors” program where we offer senior adopters an opportunity to adopt an eligible pet at a discounted fee.* Meet Jasper! He is a shy little guy who can be quite anxious. Jasper tends to cower and run away from anyone approaching him, but he's better when his sister, Mae Mae, is around and will often follow her lead. Though he is not housebroken, keeping him on Mae Mae's schedule helps prevent most accidents in the house. Getting him outside can be challenging since he doesn’t like to come near people, so he always has a leash on. Once you have the leash, he follows like an expert. Jasper takes a long time to warm up to anyone, but even when he's unsure, he will generally let you pet or hold him if you can catch him. Despite being high-strung, he's a sweet little guy. His nervousness can be comical; he often looks like he's afraid of his own shadow. However, in a quiet house, he will find me and lay at my feet. If you catch him, he will allow cuddles and even lay next to you, though his first instinct is to be shy. Jasper’s short little legs are the cutest, and he can move fast!  Jasper is bonded to Mae Mae so they must be adopted together. Adopting a senior dog is like getting a vintage car – it comes with character, a few extra quirks, and might need a bit more maintenance. Expect occasional tune ups at the vet for oil changes (aka meds), and embrace the fact that those 'normal lumps and bumps' are just part of the well-earned charm package! Ruff Start will share all known health information with adopters and rec ommendations to keep your senior dog in top shape. Jasper is from a local owner surrender.  If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract. She is an extremely loving and affectionate dog who always wants pets but is equally happy to sit at your feet and chill when you're busy. Mae Mae is easy to pick up and cuddle, and she even allows cradling like a baby. She is the most happy and easygoing dog, thriving with anyone who will feed her and give her loads of attention. Mae Mae is not food aggressive or highly food motivated, and she isn't particularly playful, as she hasn't shown much interest in various toys, even ones with treats. She gets mini zoomies in the house when happy and would probably run like the wind if free outside. So far, she hasn't shown any forms of aggression or negative behavior. Mae Mae does get a little barky when she sees new things outside and likes to jump on the furniture to sleep, which we haven't tried to stop. We haven't needed to crate her, and she wasn't crated in her previous home either. She seems to like car rides and doesn't show any signs of stress during them. Mae Mae is a chill and delightful companion!   She is bonded to Jasper so they must be adopted together.  Adopting a senior dog is like getting a vintage car – it comes with character, a few extra quirks, and might need a bit more maintenance.
