Petey is an 8-year-old male Shih Tzu mix that weighs 15 pounds. He has beautiful curly black hair with a small white mark on his chest. Petey came into rescue when we were contacted by a veterinary clinic, where he was taken to be euthanized because his owners didn’t want him anymore. The vet thought Petey was a sweet boy and wouldn’t, in all good conscience, euthanize him, so the owners just gave him to the clinic. Petey had been badly neglected by his owners, was horribly matted and had no previous veterinary care. When he was evaluated by the veterinarian, Petey was found to have chronic kidney disease. He is now on a very specific prescription diet for kidney disease and is doing very well. He cannot have any other food or treats because his kidney disease will return and he will prematurely die. But if maintained on the prescription diet, he can live a long, healthy, happy life. No other medications, other than the diet, are necessary. Petey is a loving, happy guy. He follows his people and wants to be by you or at least always be able to see you. He likes to spend his evenings sitting with you. He enjoys going outside and loves a fenced in yard. Petey is pretty well house trained, and his foster parents continue to work on that by letting him out every couple hours during the day, and by having piddle pads available for him at night. He sleeps contently in his own bed at night. He gets along with his foster siblings so a small companion dog would be fine.. An adults only home would suit him perfectly, although older children (older than 12 years), who are quiet and respectful would be okay. These are the requirements for Petey’s new family: • An adult, stay at home family, although older children would be okay. • Petey does not do stairs so he needs to live in a single story home. • A fenced yard is a plus.t. He loves to explore the outdoors, but as importantly, he must be let out every 2-3 hours to urinate, and a fenced yard would facilitate that. • Petey needs a family that can willingly afford his prescription kidney disease diet, and be vigilant about feeding him ONLY the prescribed food, including treats. He must stay on this for the rest of his life in order to remain healthy. • A family within 60 miles of the Twin Cities. • Commit to attending the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion every year in September. Petey is neutered, current on vaccinations and on heartworm and flea preventative. He is scheduled for a dental January 3rd at Rice Creek with a recheck of labs scheduled a month later in February, also at Rice Creek. I am a dashing, calm, and very sweet senior male Shih Tzu who loves to sit on foster mom’s lap while she works. I’m not really into toys but I enjoy watching TV, sleeping in bed with mom at night, and I LOVE to eat food and treats, especially popcorn… YUUUMMM! Oh yea, I’m quite the dancer too! It’s true, in fact, I think my moves are better than Fred Astaire’s and I like to show off my dancing prowess whenever I want a treat or to be lifted onto the couch. By the way, I also did great at the groomer but then who doesn’t want to look all spiffy am I right!?! Anyway, I do not like being left alone and I hate the kennel/crate! As a matter of fact, I will bark in either of those situations so hopefully my new family will be home with me (and doesn’t have shared walls!). I am, however, good about doing my business outside on a schedule; I do well with the leash; and I’m great with kids, cats, and other small dogs like me. I am Noel. I am from Kentucky If you're looking for a hiking partner, look away! Noel's idea of an active life is going around the yard a couple times, followed by a nap. With a clean bill of health, this girl is ready to be someone's spoiled, pampered princess. And just like the Princess in the Princess and the Pea, this girl is sensitive. No kids and no rough handling for her. This girl needs an experienced owner who is willing to build trust, respect her boundaries and help her learn to feel safe and secure in higher stress situations like the vet. Noel currently lives with a cat and another small dog. She has little interest in either of them, but can get snappy with the other dog if he gets too close to her food. She can manage the three steps at the back door, but a full staircase from the first floor to the upstairs is a bit much from her, as is jumping up on the furniture. She'll happily fuss to let you know she wants up and is fine being carried up and down. Because of her sensitivity around rough hands, Noel is only available to homes with no children. While you'll need a little patience to win her full trust, this girl will reward you by making curling up at your side her favorite hobby. From the Vet: Hi! I'm Noel a spunky southern gal finally ready to be looking for my furever home! I came into rescue a few months ago and needed to have several medical issues addressed before I could commit to the search for a home. I came having already had a recent mammary mass removal surgery when I was still in Kentucky. The biopsy from that surgery was inconclusive so I was scheduled for a second mass removal surgery at which time it was determined that the masses were a non-cancerous benign growth. My future family should monitor for any future masses and consult a primary care vet if new masses present. I also had a dental procedure where 17 teeth were extracted. At home dental care is recommended to maintain oral health as much as possible. On my first exam, grade 2/4 MPL's (medial luxating patellas) were noted, however I am walking fine and not experiencing any lameness or pain. Currently, surgical intervention will not be needed. Joint supplements and other supportive care in addition to exercise and lean diet could be considered helpful. Hope to settle into a quiet, happy home in my later years!

Kylea is a sweet girl learning every day! From her foster:   Kylea is shy and scared at first but when she came out of her shell, we found she loves to be petted and loves lap time.   Very sweet little girl and will be a very loyal dog.  She does best with a routine and repetition to help learn new skills, (she learns best by repeating a behavior.)  She barks when I come home or from upstairs or hears my voice, a happy bark. She sleeps all night in our bed.  Kylea would be best in a home with someone who is home a lot.  No small children but older is fine.   An established dog in home to help teach her how to be a dog. She watches her foster siblings and catches on fast, but still adjusting to a home and  humans.   A calm home is best.  She loves to sleep in her fosters bed, a crate is not recommended, she will chew at the bars.  She has an old jaw injury from where she came from and lost  many teeth during her dental, softer food is best for her.  Toys aren't a favorite of her, loud squeaky toys scare her and bones are not advised with her jaw injury.  She has dry eye, many Shih Tzu's do, and has daily eye meds for it. Leash walking will need to continue to be taught and a yard with a fence is a must, as she is an escape artist. She should not be crated, as she came from an environment where she was in a small crate 24/7. She follows her foster sibling around, this is her way of learning since coming out of the mill, and learns by repetition and seeing what other well behaved dogs do.
