Bertha was turned in to a rural Virginia shelter with 2 other hounds. She's 4-5 years old and weighs about 50 lbs. Bertha is sweet and a little timid in new situations. This group of hounds has been through a lot and were urgent rescues from a full shelter. They are currently boarding in Virginia to keep them safe while we arrange foster care and adoptions. She did well with kids and cats when tested at the shelter. We'll have better photos soon - we have videos to share with interested adopters. Arriving in Massachusetts Dec 6th. *Walter`s adoption fee has been sponsored by a donor!*Calling all hound enthusiasts! Walter is a sweet, sensitive guy who is the perfect mix of active, silly and affectionate when you take things at his pace! Walter is a nature-enthusiast and loves to be outdoors. He can often be found sniffing along the trails on our shelter campus, and will make a great adventure buddy once he`s had some time to settle in and learn the expectations of a new home. Walter can be a little worried when meeting new people and dogs, and has been known to use his impressive hound voice to communicate when he is uncomfortable, so he`s looking for an adopter who will use a gentle approach to training while also letting him set the pace! If you`d like to learn more about Walter, stop by our Cape Cod Adoption Center during open hours!

Story
Noah is a very lucky hound who was found in the rural Virgnia woods by a hiker. Noah was badly injured and had a fractured leg and broken jaw, probably the result of being hit by a car. Noah is now in the care of one of our Virginia fosters. His jaw has mostly healed and following surgery, his leg is healing and he is expected to make a full recovery. In spite of all he's been through, Noah is a happy, friendly hound. His foster says 'He's very sweet and has been a good boy so far, only 2 accidents in the house, is good in the crate and doesn't mind it at all.' When cat tested, Noah ignored the cat until it growled at him and then he tried to run away. Noah is going to be a wonderful hound companion. He's about 3 yrs old and smaller at 40-45 lbs. We expect Noah to arrive in Massachusetts in mid-November. If you’d like to apply to adopt, please submit an application using the link below. Story
Meet Rey! A thoughtful four-year-old Treeing Walker Coonhound mix currently living in Medford, MA, whose heart beats strongest for bacon-scented fetch balls, cozy naps, and training games that come with tasty rewards. With her striking black and fawn coat and expressive eyes that light up for treats, Rey is both clever and loyal! She’s house-trained, crate-trained, and knows an impressive list of commands like “sit,” “stay,” “heel,” “touch,” and even “hold,” where she’ll patiently balance a treat on her nose. Walks around the neighborhood and treat-dispensing puzzle toys are some of her favorite ways to spend the day, and she’s happiest when life follows a calm, predictable routine. Rey is currently taking daily fluoxetine to support her anxiety, and with consistent training and structure, she’s made incredible progress! Her anxiety tends to show up around unfamiliar people and dogs who approach her with interest, and while she can settle quickly when left alone, she needs help managing greetings and space boundaries. Her current caregivers use leash management, positive reinforcement, and distance-based games to help her feel secure during new encounters. It’s important to note that Rey has a bite history. In past situations where she felt startled or overwhelmed—such as when someone disturbed her while she was sleeping or tried to take food—she has reacted defensively and bitten. These incidents were not unprovoked and did not require medical attention, and her signals when uncomfortable are easy to spot with experience. For this reason, Rey is not suitable for homes with children or other pets. She’s best suited for a quiet, structured environment with a caregiver who has experience working with anxious or reactive dogs. Despite her challenges, Rey is deeply connected to her people and incredibly responsive to training. She’s not high-energy, but she’s engaged and eager to learn when motivated by food and trust. We’re including a full month of behavioral guidance from our consultant to help Rey settle in. Her new family will have compassionate support every step of the way to feel confident, connected, and at home. Could your steady, pet-free home be the space where Rey can thrive with calm leadership and loving patience? Reach out to adopt@joyfulpets.com to learn more about welcoming this special girl into your life!
