Story
Spice is a 2 year old Bulldog mix looking for a quiet, lazy home! He came to the shelter as a stray with his mother Pumpkin. Spice is a loving and gentle boy who loves attention! After being seen for limping, he was diagnosed with a congenital limb deformity of all 4 legs. He needs frequent breaks to rest, and a home without stairs would be best for him.  Even with his condition, he's a happy pup who wants to play for awhile before settling down for butt scratches and belly rubs.  He knows come and sit - but sit is hard for him as he has to tip to sit on his hip/side - eventually just flopping down to get one of those awesome belly rubs! Given his breed, he is short and stout, weighing about 75 1bs and he can be a bit drooly. He has a beautiful coat, soft soulful eyes and he frequently looks like he's smiling! Looking for a calm, loving companion? You'll find him in Spice.  He and his mellow mom, Pumpkin play really well together if you're looking for a package deal.  Fill out an app and come meet your new best friend soon! If you would like to meet me, please visit our website and complete the pre-adoption application.  Once it has been processed then we can make a date to get together! All dogs are spayed/neutered, heartworm tested (if over 2 years old), vaccinated, dewormed, flea and tick treated, microchipped and more before adoption. Our adoption policies include: Application, Vet Reference, Landlord approval & Criminal Background Check. We do not do same day adoptions. We request that you call for an appointment after your application has been approved to come and visit the dog of your choice. If you have a dog currently, you should bring him/her along to meet the new dog so we can see how everyone interacts.  Please visit our website for additional information. Story
Pumpkin is a sweetheart of a lady.  She is a roughly 5 year old bulldog mix who was brought in as a stray with her son, Spice.  Given her breed, she is short and stout, weighing about 75 1bs and she can be a bit drooly. She has a beautiful coat and soft, soulful eyes. She is good with other dogs but can be particular.  We're not sure yet about cats.  She is playful and silly in the indoor play arena tossing and chasing toys. And then suddenly plopping down next to you to get pets and attention.  She knows basic commands and is learning to be a pretty ladylike walker.  She is food motivated and loves her treats! She has this cute thing she does - when she gets her breakfast or dinner, she always picks up her bowl and carries it to her bed, carefully and happily cleaning up any spills.  This happy, sweet lady will make a great addition to your family. Fill out an app and come meet her! Story
Surly is a beautiful puppy, she'll be two on April 29th. She's been a great dog and loves laying around cuddling with her younger brother Finnegan (also available). We rescued Surly from Save-a-Bull as a young puppy. She's always been a loving and affectionate dog who loves our young kids. Surly loves the Snow and doesn't mind going on walks even when it's cold! She is very smart and knows commands like sit, shake a paw, lay-down up, come, stay, etc. She is still young though and will need additional training. We are looking for someone who loves big dogs and knows how to care for them properly. Surly is strong puppy! You need to be in pretty good shape to walk her. The ideal owner is able to take both Surly and her brother Finn or at least has another larger dog at home for Surly to play with. Ideally you have experience with the breed as well.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Meet Plum but we affectionately refer to her as Alice, a name that seems to resonate well with her, even though her response to names is not particularly strong yet. Alice is thriving and displays a gentle and sweet demeanor, especially towards my 11-year-old son. Evidently, she has spent considerable time with children and relishes their company. She eagerly joins my son in bed, finding her way under the covers to peacefully doze off—a clear indication of her yearning for a permanent home. Alice's physical attributes contribute to her charm, boasting surprisingly soft fur and a tender face, possibly hinting at some American Bulldog lineage. She delights in showering affection by licking faces endlessly and enjoys being cradled on her back like a baby for extended periods. While she responds well to commands like "crate up," occasional reinforcement is needed. Generally quiet and composed once settled, Alice has never indulged in people food, eliminating any begging behavior. However, if something piques her interest, she positions herself as close as allowed, even attempting to snatch it if not deterred. Her recall skills, especially outdoors, are lacking, likely stemming from a past where she had ample freedom to roam. Reactivity and impulse control pose challenges, particularly around lawnmowers, other dogs, loud vehicles, and joggers. Her behavior around these situations can be unpredictable at times so it necessitates careful management with a gentle leader and harness. A friend, who is a dog trainer, has confirmed these challenges but believes they are not insurmountable, with patience and professional guidance. Residing in a wooded area with a fenced yard, Alice spends her time observing wildlife, offering a positive outlet for her energy. She coexists well with another dog in the household, and her occasional resource guarding has significantly diminished over time. Despite some stubbornness, Alice is bright and quick to learn when motivated. Her sleep habits lean towards a more laid-back hound-like pattern, not exhibiting an early riser tendency. Alice's athleticism shines through in the backyard, where she bounces energetically and engages in enthusiastic pursuits. It's worth noting that she has endured past abuse, evident in moments of flinching during seemingly innocuous activities, highlighting the importance of understanding her background in shaping her behavior. Overall, with the right guidance and patience, Alice, the sweet and spirited dog, has the potential to overcome her challenges and thrive in a loving forever home. Plum is from a local impound. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Hi, I’m Chewy! Some of my favorite things are chew toys, tennis balls, wet food, and people! I’m picking up on potty training quickly when taken out frequently throughout the day, and I am generally quiet in my crate at night—I might whine a little at first because I just want to be next to my person, but once I settle down, my foster mom has been able to sleep through the night. I have also done well with the cats in my foster home. I mostly ignore them. I do like to use my mouth to play, so I need someone who is dedicated to puppy training and providing me with plenty of appropriate things to chew on. If you’re ready for puppy energy, I would love to be your new best friend! Chewy is from a local reservation partner. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. *This animal is a part of our “Seniors for Seniors” program where we offer senior adopters an opportunity to adopt an eligible pet at a discounted fee.* Hi All!  Phyllis here.  I've been with my foster mom now for about a month and we are really figuring each other out. I've worked really hard on my communication skills and now foster mom knows when I need to go potty or need something else (like pets and loves).  Sometimes she says I talk too much though, but really it's just cause I don't want her to forget about me. Sometimes she has the nerve to go in a different room without me so I have to let her know she forgot about me until I find her.  At night I don't sleep in a kennel anymore but instead I get to sleep on a big comfy pile of blankets.  I feel like the princess and the pea! The newest and best thing that we figured out is that I like to PLAY!  Foster mom brought me home a "lamby" from the rescue and I love it.  We play fetch with it and I almost always bring it back.  I like to snuggle and chew on it.  I love it.  I get tired pretty quickly but it's fun to play as long as I have the energy. When I'm done playing I like to take naps.  I'm pretty adamant that I like to be tucked in though, and sometimes I won't go to sleep if I'm not. Are you a good "tucker"? If so, I want to meet you. Phyllis needs a home where she can live out her days knowing she is loved and wanted for the beautiful heart that she has.  Adopting a senior dog is like getting a vintage car – it comes with character, a few extra quirks, and might need a bit more maintenance. Expect occasional tune ups at the vet for oil changes (aka meds), and embrace the fact that those 'normal lumps and bumps' are just part of the well-earned charm package! Ruff Start will share all known health information with adopters and rec ommendations to keep your senior dog in top shape.
