Story
Lucy is a sweet, playful and loving dog. She’s very smart and typically needs to be told once to rectify an unwanted behavior. I believe that she is approximately four years old, I got her as a rescue dog. I don’t believe she’s ever been abused. She is very loyal. She doesn’t get up on furniture unless invited. She is a vigilant watchdog and will keep you safe. She can tell the difference between friendly visitors and unknown people. I love this dog. The reason I have to give her up is because if she gets out of my fenced yard (by accident, not by jumping over it), she at times ignores my calls to come back. The unexpected freedom is too exciting for her. And she can become aggressive with other dogs. This aggression is unfair to other dogs on leashes. She will not always come to me once she has engaged with another dog . And if I can’t physically manage my dog, I can’t keep her. It’s unfair to other dogs. Inside my property I cannot imagine a better dog - smart, loving and so loyal.

Story
That face that you fell for is the happy-go-lucky heartthrob we call Charlie. He is the kind of dog that meets the world with a big ol’ smile and all the wiggle-wag one dog can physically create. He is a goofball with bouncy joy, the cutest charm, and some amazing cuddles. Charlie is estimated to be just over one-year-old, he weighs 50-pounds, and we think he is a bit of a lab/bulldog mix but truthfully we can’t say for sure given he is a rescue. The only test I could run showed he is 100% sunshine and sweetness. See for yourself then come back to read more- https://youtu.be/sQRj9YmGuG4 Charlie is a friendly boy that makes it hard not to fall for him immediately. After I spent the day with him I didn’t want him to go- I had fallen for him. He is instantly affectionate and melts into a puddle of belly rub seeking butter. If he doesn’t melt you will feel him lean into you for hugs, and he will even let you scoop him up for an extra sweet cuddle. This guy’s happy energy is contagious and that doesn’t stop with people, he is just as thrilled to make new dog friends as he is to be by your side. The afternoon we spent with Charlie we introduced him to a wide variety of dogs to get a feel for his play style and the types of dogs he enjoys most. It didn’t take long at all for us to be impressed with how friendly and welcoming he was. Even when other dogs came in a little hot or pushy, Charlie handled it with grace. With the right dog, an equally bouncy, playful dog, he showed us he loves a bit of bouncy, physical play but it isn’t his constant. He was comfortable enough to lay down beside brand-new dogs a sign of total trust. He’s the type who only joins in play when invited and isn’t going to push his way in as a third wheel or shut down the fun for them. He isn’t going to cause a stir but will always try to help keep the vibes tuned to fun-loving, calm joy. Charlie does need some leash work, he has the basics down and honestly I feel like I am betraying him to say such a thing because it didn’t bother me one bit. All I could see was a happy boy who was just so excited to explore the world! The more he gets to experience and enjoy the better he will be at pacing himself . That and some practice (and maybe a few treats to reward him for checking-in and walking by your side), he will learn quickly. He is a smart boy, eager to please, and already shows how well he responds when guided gently. He will bond fast and deep with his people. During the time we spent with him, the first person who interacted with him as his handler walked out of the yard, he stayed by the gate waiting- a loyal love bug through and through. Because of that devotion, he may miss you when you go at first, its natural, but with time and routine he will settle into knowing his favorite people always come home. Charlie would do best in a home with a yard and another playful, medium-energy dog to run and romp with. He could adjust to apartment living once his leash manners are polished as long as he gets plenty of playtime and adventures to meet his mental and physical needs. No cats for Charlie though, his eager friendliness does not vibe with cats. We all know cats- if you’re too eager they don’t care for you and that goes for dogs too. Charlie gets to focus his love and happiness towards people and dogs. If you’re looking for a happy, loving, goofy companion who’ll make every day so much better, Charlie’s your guy. One look into that glowing, goofy face and you’ll know -his boy was made to love you. Ready to welcome some sunshine into your life? Story
You saw his face, the soft smile is what grabbed you, it is such a good smile! This is King and he is an easy-going presence, an aspiring toy collector, and perfectly friendly. King is the type of dog who doesn’t need to be the center of attention to quietly win you over anyway. See King in action on YouTube, then come right back to read more about the laid-back companion who’s perfectly content with a toy in his mouth flashing you that soft smile in an effort to get you to play tug-o-war with him. https://youtu.be/TjJtjBAbO68 King is estimated to be around 2 years old and currently weighs 50 lbs, he is on his gains journey and will settle in closer to 55–60 lbs. He appears to be an American bully/pittie mix, and as always with rescue, breed and age are our best guess. What we do know? He’s a steady, grounded kind of dog who simply wants to share space and maybe roll around in the grass every now and then. King has a calm, observant energy, hence the name. He is friendly meeting new people but isn’t going to pull you towards every stranger that passes, he isn’t over the top about it or desperate for attention. He willl accept affection, lean into it when it’s there, but he’s not going to demand it or cling to you until you cave.. It’s an easy rhythm with him… you’re here, he’s here, and that feels good. Now… his joy! Toys! King loves them. Carrying them, squeaking them, keeping track of them, occasionally showing them off like prized possessions. It’s his version of entertainment, you will enjoy it too of course, and he’s perfectly happy doing his own thing nearby while you go about your day. This is a dog who knows how to coexist in a home without needing your constant attention or engagement. With other dogs, King is confident but thoughtful. He is friendly when meeting new dogs and his enthusiasm would make you think he was going to meet and then run off to play but nope. He gives happy greetings and then is more than happy to just hang with his new friend- no play needed to have a good time. He’s not much of a player. Despite his love of toys he is more than happy to share and once introductions are done, he’s generally aloof and unbothered. On leash, King has the basic down but will need continued guidance once he gets home. He can be strong when he sees something he wants to get to, hello new dog friend. He will benefit from practice alongside structure and consistency. Because of this, he’s not a fit for apartment living right now and would do best in a home with a yard where he can wander, sniff, and enjoy his independence. King’s energy level is medium to low. He enjoys toys, enjoys exploring, and easily settles into a relaxed, independent groove. He’s not looking for constant activity… just a home where he can be understood, given a little guidance, and appreciated for exactly who he is. Apply to adopt King today! Story
Short legs, big head, and an even bigger smile… let Billy waddle his way into your heart with his grin and those eyes of his. Challenge- try not to smile while he is headed your way. It’s hard! This blocky little heartthrob is friendly, affectionate, and carries himself with that easy, “happy to be here” energy that just puts people at ease. He greets new people with warmth, leans into love without being pushy, and has a natural way of checking in with his person that is just so endearing. He’s got that built-in desire to please, the kind you don’t have to teach… it’s just who he is. Go watch Billy Blockhead Bestie Energy on YouTube, then come right back to read more about this low-riding lovebug. https://youtu.be/uDLmKvwuc-0?si=8sDslC0j-87mgWmm Billy is estimated to be 2 years old, weighs 49 lbs, and is some version of a bully- staffie… pittie…? Who knows? Not us with confidence. Our favorite thing about him, besides the winning smile, it’s that he is the sweet spot- happy to join you wherever but never looking to turn your living room into a racetrack. He’s house and crate trained, has lovely manners in the home, and knows how to settle without needing constant direction. He’s met kids and was exactly what you’d hope for… gentle, polite, no jumping, no chaos, just a friendly little guy keeping things calm and easy. The kind of dog who aims to fit into a home instead of flipping it upside down. With other dogs, Billy leans more “mind my business” than party host. He is thoughtful, cautious and even slightly unsure at first, but he listens well to guidance, takes corrections easily, and shows nice social awareness. He does well in playgroups with a wide variety of dogs but clearly has an affection for low to medium energy females with a bully vibe who give him space to warm up, helps him feel secure while still encouraging him to play. Billy was introduced to our house cat and was curious but did show a respectfulness that makes us feel good that with guidance and a dog-savvy, confident cat he could join a home with a feline friend. Of course, if you are interested we are more than happy to arrange a Kitty Committee Slumber Party to get a clear view of his approach to cats. Also, although he has a wonderful crate routine, he can occasionally get a little vocal when he’s ready to be out and about, so a home environment (rather than apartment living) would suit him best. What really stands out about Billy is how easy he is to love. He’s soft, steady, affectionate, and just wants to be near his people, doing life alongside you without asking for much in return besides some yummy treats and belly scratches. A solid companion with a signature pittie grin and a body built for cozy corners and couch hangs… Billy is ready to be someone’s very good decision and dream bestie. If you’re looking for a loyal, low-key best friend with a little extra character packed into a short-legged frame, Billy is ready and waiting for you! Apply today and welcome home your blockhead bestie! https://adopt.animalsfirst.com/animal/62cc8e128b02916730334440/69e56a86a51ccc94ad0ebd00 Questions? Story
Meet Wilma, the squishy soul who is ready to waddle her way right into your heart! This velvety girl is a master of the puppy dog gaze and is looking for a partner to lead the way. If you’re looking for a girl who is as sweet as a marshmallow and twice as soft, Wilma is your lady. She is a sensitive, gentle soul who thrives on soft words and kind gestures. While she might start off a little shy, watching her blossom is like seeing a flower bloom in fast forward once she knows she’s safe, she is all about the love! Wait until you see those velvet ears in motion! https://youtu.be/qPGRwZiMJbM Wilma is the ultimate hang out dog. She isn't looking to run a marathon; she’d much rather be your silent partner in crime while you fold laundry or catch up on your favorite shows. She prefers to stay close to her humans where it’s warm and safe. Whether you’re a homebody or a casual stroller, Wilma is just happy to be included in the plans! What’s in a breed? With rescues, it’s always a fun guessing game, but we think our girl is a classic Pitbull mix! Wilma sports that iconic, adorable squishy girlie look complete with a velvety coat and those soulful eyes that we just can't get enough of. She’s that just right size for someone who wants a big hearted dog without needing a giant SUV to transport her! Wilma is currently living the dream in a loving foster home and proving she is a total natural at being a pampered pet! She is a polite lady who is already crate trained and house trained, making her transition into her forever home a total breeze. She has shown us that she is wonderful with kiddos, responding to them with a gentle hand and a wagging tail. She’s the kind of girl who just wants to do the right thing; she just needs a patient person to show her the way (and maybe a few treats for her hard work!). When it comes to other dogs let’s talk about what Wilma needs to succeed because yes, she’s adorable, but there’s more to her than that smooshy face! Wilma is a lady with a refined social circle and prefers to choose her friends thoughtfully. In the right setting, with proper introductions and a calm environment, she can absolutely enjoy the company of other dogs. In fact, Wilma is currently living with a male dog in her foster home, and the two coexist beautifully even riding together in the car like seasoned travel buddies. Other situations can look a little different like passing a dog in a tight space, spotting one across the street, or unexpected close encounters on leash. That’s when Wilma can get a bit overwhelmed and forget her best manners. She may become focused, pull toward the other dog, or need extra guidance to stay on track. She isn’t looking to cause trouble, she just needs help navigating those moments and understanding what’s expected of her. Wilma will thrive with a confident handler who can provide structure, consistency, and clear direction. With the right support, she has all the potential to keep building her skills and show just how lovely of a companion she can be. Wilma met a feline friend and, well, let’s just say she was very fascinated! She didn't give chase, but she seems to think cats are just very small, funny looking dogs that deserve a lot of his attention. We believe she is willing to share her kingdom with a kitty, but she will have a kitty sleepover as a trial run to ensure they can officially become the bestest of buds! The best spot for Wilma? She is looking for a home with a nice, secure yard where she can stretch her legs and sniff the grass in peace! Since she’s a sensitive soul who is still perfecting her leash walking, having her own private outdoor space will help her feel like the confident queen she is meant to be. She’s a quiet, observant girl who just wants a soft place to land and a human to tell her she’s the best girl in the world (she absolutely is). In short, Wilma is a squishy, affectionate treasure who is just waiting for the right person to unlock her full potential. She is gentle, smart, and has a heart of gold. Ready to bring this squishy girl home? Fill out an application and start your adventure with Wilma today! https://adopt.animalsfirst.com/animal/62cc8e128b02916730334440/69b079005c7fbf087506fb14 Questions? Adoption fees help cover a portion of these expenses, but without government funding, we rely on fundraising to bridge the gap—ranging from $100–$1,000+ per dog. Our adoption fees reflect the extensive care and resources that go into each animal we save. The adoption fee is a donation to the mission and goes far beyond getting a fully vetted pet. It doesn’t stop there! Our adopters also receive these SPECIAL PERKS: Extensive behavioral testing and information from trainers on our staff to ensure the perfect fit for your family Discounts on Embark DNA test kit- $30 off of Breed ID test or $50 off of Breed ID plus Health test 30 day trial of pet insurance with Trupanion A free private online dog training session with GoodPup, plus low pricing for future sessions Access to multiple dog trainers in your area, along with $40 off of your first session of in person dog training through Rover Training 70% off of your first order of Fetch, a delicious PNW based fresh dog meatballs subscription Coupons for a fun visit to Petco 20% off of Dr. Cuddles pet first aid and hygiene solutions Discounted heartworm, flea prevention, and monthly dewormer Access to our exclusive FB Adopters page, where you can network for play dates, resources, and connect with other adopters that share their passion for their adopted pup! The Greater Houston area faces one of the highest stray and overpopulation rates in the U.S. We’re a nonprofit on a mission—to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome dogs at risk, while promoting spay/neuter outreach in the community. When you adopt, you save more than one life— the one you adopted, and the space opened up to save another. Story
Meet Dukota — a handsome Boxer boy with the perfect mix of goofy charm and laid-back companionship! While Boxers are known for their endless energy, Dukota is a little more mellow than most of his breed. He still loves getting out for long walks, playtime, and consistent exercise, but he’s just as happy relaxing by your side afterward. This athletic guy has a playful personality that will keep you smiling, whether he’s making silly faces, showing off his zoomies, or leaning in for affection. Dukota thrives in a calm, predictable home where he can feel comfortable and settled. Because he prefers a quieter environment, he would do best with older children or in an adult-only home.Dukota can be selective with his canine friends and is reactive to some dogs. However, he previously lived successfully with other dogs and did well with them. He would likely do best either as the only dog in the home or with calm, friendly dogs given slow and proper introductions. If you’re looking for a loyal companion with a goofy streak and a heart full of love, Dukota may just be your perfect match! If you are interested in meeting Dukota, the shelter is open Monday through Saturday, 11 am – 6 pm, Sunday 11 am-4 pm (Summer Hours). If you’d like to schedule an appointment, check out the pets’ profile on our website at newberganimals.com to fill out an application and email it to frontdesk@newberganimals.com.Due to COVID-19, we are currently only open by appointment. Please follow the instructions on each pet profile.
