Story
Meet Twix. This handsome Bully boy was found tied to a pole as a very young pup. Thankfully, a Good Samaritan saw him, took him in, and ensured he found his way to rescue. Twix has proven to be a vibrant, sweet, and smart boy, and we are thrilled to help him find his forever home. Twix is currently living with seasoned fosters, Laura and Brian, along with their resident dog, Buddy. Before arriving in the DC metro area, he lived happily in a home with four other dogs. He’s been an easy introduction to every dog he’s met and truly loves being part of a pack. Playful and social, Twix thrives in an active environment and especially enjoys rough-and-tumble play. He’ll do best in a home with a dog his size or larger who matches his energy and play style. FOSTER MOM UPDATE  Laura shared, “Twix is doing great! He settled in quickly, and we love having his fun and loving personality around. He has done a good job acclimating to Buddy, and I think he’s best paired with a medium energy-level dog that would play with him throughout the day. Buddy plays but only when he wants to, so Twix doesn't mind lounging around. He does a good job keeping himself occupied with toys, and I have no problem working from home every day. He settles down well. Twix is a very sweet boy who loves his belly rubs, playing chase, and tug-of-war is his favorite game. He does great at meeting new people and will talk to you from time to time. It’s the cutest thing.” ******* Twix has shown himself to be adaptable and eager to learn. He’s housetrained, crate-trained, and has started mastering basic commands. He rides well in the car and is a social boy who enjoys meeting new people and other dogs. He has decent leash skills and has been through some training to improve his leash skills.  Twix is very treat-motivated and learns quickly. We believe that Twix will do best in an active home. He’d thrive with a family who appreciates his fun and goofy personality and is committed to giving him the structure and love he deserves. While he loves the company of other dogs, Twix would also be happy as the center of attention in a single dog home, provided he has plenty of interaction and activity. This lovable boy has so much to offer and is ready to bring joy, laughter, and unconditional love to his new family. If you’re looking for a loyal, active, and playful companion, Twix might just be the perfect fit for you. Apply today! BREED ESTIMATE:  American Staffordshire/Bulldog/Bully Mix = Super cute! Story
Meet Buster! This handsome young bully boy is as sweet as they come and a naturally social pup. He was rescued from a local county shelter, where his standout doggy social skills caught the attention of one of our amazing foster moms, Laine, who stepped up to bring him safely into rescue. Buster is now living with Laine, Gary, and their pack of three pups, and he’s fit right in! He’s great with other dogs, loves to play, shares toys nicely, and is a big fan of tug-of-war. Laine describes him as a happy-go-lucky, affectionate boy with an exceptionally soft, silky coat. He already knows sit and shake, and has great leash skills. Buster is housetrained, crate-trained, and walks beautifully on leash, both solo and as part of a pack. Laine has also started taking him out on errands and to the pet store to test his social skills, and he’s met everyone with a wag and a smile. He thinks everyone’s a friend and takes city life in stride, unbothered by leaf blowers, traffic, or fire trucks. The only things they’re working on are his excitement jumps and occasional mouthiness, which is pretty typical young dog behavior, but for that reason, he’d do best in a home with kids out of the toddler stage. Buster will make an excellent pack companion and family dog, and is ready to start his new life! Story
Meet Polly! This petite Bully girl with adorable ears and a zest for life has blossomed in her foster home.  She had an unfair start in life, but her natural joy is unmatched. She loves her foster parents and her pack, romping in the yard, and playing with toys, and she is a champion snuggler!  Polly came to us from a rural shelter. She had been confiscated as a puppy by Animal Control from a bad home situation and was held as "evidence" until her prior owner was taken to court. Polly was rescued so young, she had little exposure to the outside world at the shelter before she came into rescue — stairs, car rides, and walks in a neighborhood were all new to her, so she had some catching up to do. Thankfully Polly has had two incredible foster families that changed the course of her life. Timid dogs like Polly typically need more time in their foster home to be ready for adoption. Polly was fortunate to have foster parents who worked with her, gradually exposing her to new things, and expanding her horizons. She has flourished with some TLC and her trusty dog pack by her side. Polly loves other dogs and would do best with a pup playmate in her new home. She gains confidence from other dogs and will continue to thrive with a playmate. FOSTER MOM UPDATE -9/29/24 We checked in with her foster mom, Shaleia, for an update: “Polly has come such a long way during her time with us! It has been a pleasure to watch her grow into the confident, loving, and playful dog that she is. She is no longer fearful of car rides or outings to town and really enjoys going on walks, especially if there are lots of new smells to explore. We usually walk her solo because she has a higher energy level than our other two and appreciates a much longer walk. On these solo walks she is one of the easiest dogs on leash I’ve ever handled, she is not reactive at all and doesn’t pull. Polly loves other dogs and has gained confidence from being part of a pack. She fell in love with our two dogs right away, but it did take us humans a little time to earn her trust. Watching her now you wouldn’t believe it! She is very affectionate and loves to cuddle and give kisses. It melts my heart when she comes up to me and pushes her head and shoulder into my chest for a hug. While Polly warmed up to me first, she loves to snuggle and play with my husband and our 11-year-old too. Her two favorite things in life are toys and treats. She can easily entertain herself with a new toy but gets so much joy out of playing tug and keep-away with her people. She loves to chase a ball - and she is fast - but it wouldn’t be fair to call it ‘fetch’ since you have to do some work to get it back, lol. It’s fun to watch Polly play, she is a real athlete and fearlessly leaps and twists to catch her toys. And when it’s time for a treat, Polly can hardly contain her joy and shows off her tap dancing skills. She will toss it, dance and prance around her treasure, and have her own little party. She treasures her toys and is the resident toy hoarder, always having one close by. Polly can still be timid in new situations at first, but she gains confidence more quickly with repeated exposure. Once she's comfortable with a person or place, you get to see her confident and sassy personality emerge. She’s made progress in every area of her development, especially in our home. We’ve proven that she’s good with men, women, and kids. She loves my husband and has proven to be an equal-opportunity snuggler." ********* Leash Skills - One major improvement area has been walks. I think she would be just fine walking through more dense neighborhoods now, though she appreciates the more natural walking trails. She really enjoys long walks and marches at a good pace, but also likes to be able to stop and sniff the roses... and other things. She does best on paths she knows, but she only needs to visit a new route a few times to gain confidence. She's comfortable with bikes/strollers/etc and just keeps walking.   Meeting New People - Polly is better at meeting strangers. She doesn't try to keep as much distance and seems more curious about them.  Having another dog there makes it easier on her because she'll be excited to say hi if they are. She follows their lead. She still takes time to trust new people and needs trust to be earned, but she has no ill will toward anyone, she just needs time to trust and verify they are OK. My friend who comes over for playdates has made great progress with Polly. We had her come into the house on the last visit to see how Polly would react and it went well. There was no barking or extra shy behavior. Now when we hang out, Polly will come up to her to say hi, get a couple of scratches, and give a lick to her hand too… Crate - She is crate-trained. We use the crate when the humans are out of the house. At night, she will go to her crate on her own when she sees us starting to get ready for bed. I think the crate is her safe, secure space and she sleeps through the night without issue.  Training/Commands - She knows a handful of commands but isn't always consistent with them. She's pretty good with 'leave it' and 'sit', though she is often so wiggly she doesn't stay in sit long She knows 'down' and 'stay'. Overall, she does well learning our routines and generally knows what we expect of her and is responsive, but she still has the excitement level that can distract her at times.” ****** We are looking for a loving, patient owner for Polly who will give her time to settle in and adjust to her new surroundings. We feel another social, playful, established dog in her home will help her trust and adapt more quickly. She will do best in a quieter neighborhood vs. city or condo setting.  If given a chance, this sweet girl will charm you, and we can promise she will make you smile and laugh every day. Story
Meet Magnolia, aka Maggie. This sweet bully girl was rescued just before Thanksgiving in PG County, MD. Her rescuer, and now foster mom, Mara saw a post on her Ring app about a dog tied to a light post in a local park. Animal Control had been contacted, but no one had responded, and with the cold weather, Mara worried for the dog’s safety. She went to look for her, walking through the park multiple times until she noticed a small shape on the ground that she initially thought was a bag, but it was Maggie, curled up in a tight ball, trying to stay warm. She was thin, dehydrated, and exhausted, but friendly, allowing Mara to leash her and bring her home. Maggie has been living with Mara, her partner, their dog, and a cat for the past seven weeks. During her first week, she slept a lot and was fed small, frequent meals to help her regain strength. It was clear she had recently had puppies and was also dealing with skin infections that needed treatment. After multiple vet visits, her skin issues have nearly fully resolved, her beautiful chocolate-brown coat is filling in, and she’s gaining weight and muscle.  Today, Maggie is a completely different dog. She’s come out of her shell and now shows the healthy energy of the young dog she is. She’s learned good house manners, is both house- and crate-trained, and has adapted well to being part of a pack. Maggie does well with the resident dog but is not a good fit with cats. We also brought in a trainer to work on her leash skills, and she’s made steady, positive progress.  At first, everything was exciting and new for Maggie, but with continued exposure, she has learned to navigate new social situations. She does well meeting visitors and joins her foster parents on outings, including trips to Home Depot. She recently attended a family holiday gathering where she did great with everyone.  We checked in with her foster mom, Mara, for an update: "Magnolia is such a sweetheart and so loving. She is a naturally friendly, social pup who is always seeking love and affection. Sometimes she even thinks she’s a lap dog. She’s an active girl who’s always ready to go and do, but she’s also learned how to settle indoors and is just as happy lounging on the couch for a movie night. Adjusting from her previous living situation (unknown) to life inside a home took a little time, but she’s absolutely loving it now. Magnolia loves the comforts of home and is a total cuddle bug who wants to be right by your side. We’re currently working on basic commands like “sit” and helping her build impulse control, balanced with playtime with her stuffies and cozy crate naps. She’s shown no signs of reactivity toward people or other dogs, and no resource guarding. She does, however, have a prey drive and is very interested in squirrels and other critters.” ******** We think Maggie would thrive in an active home and would love a canine companion of similar size and energy to play with. She’ll do best with an owner who has large-dog experience and is committed to providing structure and continuing her training so she can keep progressing. Maggie is an incredibly sweet girl who will make a loyal, loving companion. Apply today! Story
Meet Luna! This gorgeous girl was adopted as a four-month-old puppy and received some early training, but as she matured, her family didn’t continue the structure and consistency she needed. Luna is an active, intelligent dog who thrives with leadership, daily exercise, and a predictable routine. Without those things, she became overstimulated and developed some resource-guarding behaviors with the other dog in her previous home. Luna was fortunate to connect with one of our favorite trainers, Brittany. When Brittany first met her, Luna was heavily medicated. A behaviorist had prescribed multiple high-dose anti-anxiety medications, which unfortunately increased her anxiety and failed to address the root of the issues. Brittany requires all client dogs to be off behavioral medications so training can focus on true behavior change vs. masking the dog’s behaviors. Luna was carefully and fully weaned off all medications, and a very different dog emerged. She began thinking clearly, rediscovered how to simply be a dog, and made tremendous progress through training. Despite Luna’s improvement, her family chose to rehome her, stating they couldn’t meet her needs. Sadly, Luna never had the chance to show them how far she’d come. When Brittany realized the family wasn’t invested, she stepped up without hesitation, offering to foster Luna and continue her training. Luna has been living with Brittany, her husband, and their balanced pack of four dogs, and has been completely off all medications for the past six months. We recently checked in with Brittany for an update: “Luna is goofy, sweet, and playful. She’s very loving and enjoys snuggling on the sofa when invited, though she can get a little enthusiastic about affection. She’s earned free-roam privileges in our home, but we still crate her at night and when we’re away. She’s incredibly fun to work with and picks things up quickly. We love taking her on outings and off-leash adventures. Socially, you can take Luna just about anywhere. She is not reactive, very neutral towards other dogs in passing and viewing. Though she can be excitable, she’s friendly towards new people and enjoys playing with dogs she knows. Luna is an active dog with moderate drive. She loves learning and thrives when she has goals or a ‘job.’ She’s not a couch potato; she needs both physical activity and mental stimulation, and will do best with an experienced owner who will give her the structure she needs and a calm living environment." Luna loves: *&#239&#184&#143&#226&#131&#163 Training and learning new skills *&#239&#184&#143&#226&#131&#163 Playing ball and frisbee *&#239&#184&#143&#226&#131&#163 Walks, hikes, patio outings, off-leash runs, and swimming in the local creek Luna is great with people of all ages, though we think a home with older kids would be best. She has solid dog-to-dog social skills but needs the right laid-back canine companion in her home. While living in a balanced pack has helped her a lot, Luna would also thrive as an only dog. She truly loves being a companion and wants to go on adventures together. Luna has received extensive training and knows commands including Sit, Down, Heel, Come, Stay, Place, Up-Up, Out, Touch, and more. Her adoption includes two private training sessions with Brittany, plus lifetime discounted lessons to support a successful transition. Luna is looking for a home that understands her needs, is ready to keep her engaged, and wants to build a deep, rewarding bond with a smart, active girl. If you think you could be her perfect match, or know someone who might, please reach out or apply today!   BREED ESTIMATE: Pointer/Staffy Mix GENDER: Female APPROXIMATE WEIGHT:  63 lbs  APPROXIMATE AGE: ~ 3 years old COAT TYPE: Short coat ADOPTION FEE: $425 OTHER INFO: utd on shots/spayed/microchipped LOCATION: Frederick, MD   FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to https://adopt.worthydog.org and complete the application. Story
Meet Beezy…Look at this gorgeous boy!&#226&#157&#164&#239&#184&#143 Beezy was rescued along with his mom and eight siblings, who were born at a shelter in Charlotte, NC and taken in by one of our partner rescues. This rescue group that we work with regularly vets moms and their babies before sending them up north to find loving homes. Beezy was the smallest of his siblings, and when it was time for the litter to get their vaccinations, he was still too tiny and had to be held back, missing his transport. They asked if we could take him in, and honestly, who could resist this adorable boy with the rich chocolate coat and striking hazel eyes? We know that Beezy's mom was a pittie mix, but he’s clearly mixed with a smaller breed, and was much smaller than his siblings. He’s perfectly healthy, just petite, and we suspect he may have a different father from the rest of his pack. FUN FACT: Dogs from the same litter can have different fathers. If a female mates with more than one male during her fertile period, different males can fertilize different eggs. This means pups from the same litter can have different dads.  What we know for sure about Beezy is that he’s sweet and sassy. He's very snuggly with his humans and loves being part of a pack, but also needs an owner who understands structure and leadership. His foster mom has a pup sitting/boarding business, and he is getting exposure to lots of different dogs. He enjoys playtime outdoors and loves curling up in your lap for snuggles. Beezy is crate-trained and almost potty-trained, but still needs consistent potty breaks. He's not fully trustworthy yet, but he's also still only 5 months old and doing very well.  He's at that stage of development where he needs rules and boundaries, and he's getting them in his foster home. He’s smart and trainable, and would do best with another dog in the home.  We brought in a trainer to work with him and his foster mom on his leash skills and basic obedience that all puppies need. He also did a week of board and train, and made so much progress. TRAINER UPDATE: Beezy is la ively pup with a great personality. He loves to romp and play but also enjoys snuggling up with you on the sofa for a good nap. He’s eager to learn and picks up new skills quickly - he loves to train. He enjoys neighborhood strolls, exploring, and taking in the sights. Though a small guy, he’s bold. He does require a good routine, consistent boundaries, and leadership skills to be successful. He will take over and rule the roost if he doesn’t have a good daily balance and fulfillment. Beezy enjoys spending time with other dogs and did great with my pack. He’s social but most dominant in the pack vs. submissive. A younger, confident, balanced dog that can keep up with him, show him the ropes, will be perfect heading into his new home. He needs a good playmate and dog companion to look up to. ******** Looking for an owner with some dog experience, preferably bully experience, who is ready for puppy mode for this adorably, snuggly boy. NOTE: Since Beezy has been through formal training, Worthy Dog will donate a training and transition session to his new family.  Apply today! Story
I’m an 8-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback/Boxer mix with a big heart and an even bigger love for my people. My life was turned upside down when my old family left me at a high-intake shelter, but my foster mom helped me heal, feel safe again, and remember what it’s like to be loved. Now I’m ready to find a forever family who won’t ever give up on me. I’m a polite girl with great house manners — I only chew on my toys (never shoes!), and I absolutely love squeaky toys and cozy donut beds. I’m also a champion sleeper and perfectly happy to snooze in with you on quiet mornings. Walks are one of my favorite things! Long, sniffy walks make me so happy, and I’m a wonderful adventure buddy. Sometimes I get a little reactive when I see other dogs on leash, but I’m learning every day. With some patience and positive training, I might even enjoy living with another dog after slow introductions. I adore people and I can’t wait to become someone’s loyal best friend. I’m healthy, spayed, and so excited to start my next chapter. If you’re looking for a loving, loyal, toy-collecting snugglebug who’s ready to be your whole world… I think we should meet. Love, Hunie. This cuddly girl also has a fun, playful side! Petunia loves playing fetch, running around, and enjoying time outdoors. She’s great on the leash and makes walks easy and enjoyable, whether you’re heading out for a quick stroll or a longer adventure. She’s the perfect balance of active and affectionate. When the day winds down, Petunia is a champion sleeper who settles in beautifully. She’s calm, cozy, and content to snuggle up and rest after a day of play. If you’re looking for a loving, well-mannered companion who will happily play by your side and then curl up for cuddles, Petunia might just be your perfect match Adoption fee: $525, includes 1st DHPP, deworming, flea preventative, microchip   If you are interested in adopting, please fill out an application and a representative will get back to you shortly to answer any questions you may have.
