Story
Ruger (A565134) arrived as a stray, and at first he was understandably overwhelmed. He came in shut down and protective of his kennel space, unsure of everything around him. With patience and steady work from our kennel staff, those walls slowly began to come down. Then he went into a foster home and truly showed us who he is.Ruger is the happiest, sweetest dog. The moment he walked into his foster home, he immediately got along with both a resident male and female dog. No drama, no awkward introductions. Just “Hi, I live here now. Let’s play.”His skills include using the doggy door on the first try, being fully house trained, keeping his space tidy, sitting on command, bravely tolerating grooming, playing tag with his four legged friends, and enthusiastically accepting belly rubs. In fact, he does not just accept them. He demands them.He is still learning additional commands beyond “sit,” and he is currently working on the impressive life skill of getting the water in his mouth instead of on the floor when he drinks. Progress, not perfection.Ruger loves belly rubs, car rides, exploring outside and investigating every possible smell like it is a breaking news story. He loves toys, enjoys chasing a ball, and while he is still polishing the “bring it back” portion of fetch, his enthusiasm makes up for it.One thing he does not love is kennels. He thrives in a home environment and clearly feels most confident when surrounded by people and other dogs.Because of how well he has bonded and played, Ruger would do best in a home with other dogs where he can continue building social skills and confidence. He has made incredible progress in a short amount of time. What started as a scared stray has blossomed into a loyal, playful, affectionate companion who simply needed safety and a chance.Ruger is now ready for his fresh start. If you are looking for a devoted best friend who will happily trade loyalty for belly rubs, he is ready to go home.Ruger is guesstimated to be 3 years old and weighs 54 lbs. All dogs adopted from Huntsville Animal Services are spayed/ neutered, microchipped, dewormed, appropriately vaccinated, and receive a topical 90-day flea/ tick preventative.Ready to meet Ruger? Please reach out to his foster at krantalak@gmail.com. All adopters must be 19 years or older with a valid ID.

Story
Meet Callie (A565875) and help us share her story Callie came to us as an owner surrender alongside two other dogs and several cats from the same home. Like them, she did nothing wrong. Her entire world changed overnight, and for a sensitive dog like Callie, that loss has been especially hard. She is having a very difficult time in the shelter. Most days, she trembles in her kennel, overwhelmed by the noise and constant activity around her. It is heartbreaking to see. When she gets outside, she does calm down some. She will even play and romp around a bit, but if you look closely, you can still see the fear lingering in her expression. She is trying to be brave. In fact, once she is outside, it can be almost impossible to coax her back indoors. She is that frightened of returning to the kennel. The shelter environment is simply too much for her right now.Callie takes a little more time to build trust than the other dogs from her household. She needs patience, softness, and someone willing to let her move at her own pace. But when she feels safe, she is truly lovely. She enjoys being petted and will lean into affection. She knows how to sit for treats, and according to her previous owner, she is house trained. Callie is not shutting down because she is a bad dog. She is shutting down because she is scared and grieving the only home she knew. We truly believe she would begin to blossom again in a calm, stable environment. If you have a quiet home and a gentle heart, please consider giving Callie the chance to feel safe again. She deserves more than trembling behind kennel doors.Callie is guesstimated to be 6 years old and weighs 59 lbs. All dogs adopted from Huntsville Animal Services are spayed/ neutered, microchipped, dewormed, appropriately vaccinated, and receive a topical 90-day flea/ tick preventative.Ready to meet Callie? All you have to do is stop by our shelter at 4950 Triana Blvd and head to our dog areas. You can find her in kennel D11. All adopters must be 19 years or older with a valid ID

Story
Marmaduke is a big goofy lovebug! He adores children and other dogs. He is very curious about cats and chickens and is probably best in a home without those (or where he can be separated from them). He is only about 1 year old and has been in rescue all his life. He had a medical issue as a puppy that required surgery and he is completely healed from that. He will do best in a home with a secure fenced yard, another dog or dogs to play with that are not tiny since he's so big, and respectful animal-loving children that will love him as much as he loves them. If you are interested in Marmaduke, please fill out an application at our website: forrescue.net He is fostered in the Huntsville, AL area and could be available for transport but transport fees are on top of the adoption fee.

Story
This sweet Australian shepherd mix may be heartworm positive, but don’t let that scare you away. Heartworm is treatable, and with proper care, love, and a little patience, dogs like Ranger go on to live long, happy, tail-wagging lives. While not much is known about Ranger since he was a stray pickup, what I have learned during his time in foster is that he is a kind and gentle soul, a true gem of an Australian shepherd. He is calmer than most but enjoys a good walk. He is housetrained, learning commands and in his foster home he lives with cats and another dog. He will come to you for pets and fully enjoys having his ears scratched. He is crate trained and sleeps in his all night with no issues. He rarely barks. On walks he has been exposed to traffic, other dogs, random loud noises, charging dogs, ducks, geese and people. He just walks on with no concern. He does like to approach people and sit for pets though. The vet feels he is not yet two years old, and he weighs in at 51 pounds. He has been neutered and has all his vaccines and his first shot for HW treatment.
