Story
Meet Nugget, a 7-year-old with soulful eyes and a heart that’s been through a lot of change recently. Nugget came to SBR after the only mom he has known entered hospice care and was no longer able to return home to care for him. In the midst of losing both his mom and his canine companion, Nugget has understandably been scared, confused, and searching for stability. Nugget has spent his life as an indoor dog with access to a fenced yard, which he absolutely loves. He enjoys exploring outside and has been known to slip through weak spots in fencing to go on little adventures, so he will need a securely fenced yard to keep him safe. He previously lived with another dog and seems to miss having a canine friend around, often expressing himself with a classic basset howl. He has also lived alongside cats and mostly enjoys chasing them around for fun. We believe Nugget is around 55–60 pounds and likely has “a little something extra” mixed in with all that basset charm. While we are still getting to know him, one thing is clear: Nugget is looking for a patient, loving home where he can feel safe and secure again after so much upheaval in his life. Because he has never lived with children and is unfamiliar with them, an adult-only home would likely be the best fit for him. After everything he’s been through, Nugget deserves a soft place to land and a family to love him through his next chapter.

Story
I adopted Buddy about two years ago before my daughter went to college. At the shelter where we adopted him he was very calm, sitting patiently in his pen. We were looking for a low energy dog as I am getting older and mobility is an issue. About three days after we adopted him he was in the hospital in intensive care with a significant respiratory illness, that is why he was low energy. Since getting healthy he is not the couch potato i was looking for. His activity level is average but just not what I can do. I think he would be much happier in a household with children and just more going on. He’s a very good boy very food motivated and very sweet. I want the best life for him.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Bruce will let you sleep late!  He lets his foster mom stay in bed until 9 am on the weekends. When he finally wakes up, he wants ear scratches and belly rubs.  Overall his avtivity level is pretty moderate, but every now and then he has bursts of energy and gets the zoomies.  Bruce really loves being with other dogs and they help his confidence a lot. In his foster home he plays Security Chief, keeping tabs on what's going on outside. He is fluent with the doggie door and goes out to sniff around in the backyard. He could use a little leash training. Bruce came to us skinny and fearful and he can still be timid and sensitive to loud noises, fast movements, and new people. Patience and gentleness are the key to his trust. Once he feels safe and comfortable, he'll follow you around the house and even snuggle with you. His foster mom has been crating him when she's away and she lets him sleep on the foot of the bed.  He's quite comfortable in the crate for several hours at a time. Bruce tested positive for heartworms, but has gone through treatment and is doing well. He is housebroken and is anxiously awaiting a sleepover.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.May 23, 2026, 6:54 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Matty's personality is all beagle! He's a friendly boy who was dropped off at a Louisiana shelter as a stray and he is so happy to be in his foster home! Matty wants to hang out with his humans and be a part of whatever is going on. He loves to cuddle and will do anything for food, including stealing it when you aren’t looking. Housetraining is still a work in progress, but improving. He does well in a crate. Once his foster parents started feeding him in his crate and giving him treats there, he was eager to jump right in. He is mostly quiet, even in the crate. He doesn’t bark unless he's helping the other dogs defend the yard, but even then he is not the instigator. And Matty is good with other dogs, even if they bark and growl at him. He isn’t intimidated, he just keeps going. He loves stuffed toys but occasionally he will get hold of something that isn’t a toy. He is still learning that part of being in a house. If you want a true beagle, he is exactly what you're looking for. Matty is heartworm positive but scheduled for treatment in Louisiana mid-March. He is healthy and asymptomatic so we expect him to do well. His transport to Florida can be arranged when we have an available foster home or prospective adopter.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.May 23, 2026, 6:54 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Rowdy is a goofy little guy -- fun loving, high energy, and very affectionate. He comes with a lot of perks. He's housebroken, crate trained (he does prefer white noise while crated), and knows basic obedience (sit, down, place, drop it). Rowdy is great on a leash and trained to walk at your left side. He rarely pulls, unless he sees a small animal. When he meets people and other dogs his size or larger on walks he is very friendly, but little dogs and cats seem to stimulate his urge to chase. By beagle standards, Rowdy is fairly quiet. He only barks at the doorbell or when another dog is barking. But Rowdy's current life presents him with two challenges that he struggles with. We are looking for a family who can provide him with a calmer environment. Although Rowdy was  raised with 2 small kids (now 6 and 2.5 years old), he would very much prefer either just adults, or older children. The younger ones just make him anxious and that makes it hard for him to be a fully participating member of the family. The other thing that Rowdy is very much hoping for in his new life is not a lot of visitors. Rowdy can be nervous with some new people coming into his home -- not at all aggressive, but uncomfortable and will run and hide. However, when our Intake Coordinator visited him presenting with the right non-threatening body language...and chicken... she was immediately his friend! His sweet kisses were abundant. But it can be a challenge for him when new people come into his home. Rowdy is neutered, heartworm negative and he is ready for a sleepover!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.May 23, 2026, 6:54 pm

Story
Meet Roscoe! This gorgeous boy is estimated to be around 3–5 years old, and he not only has the looks, he has the sweetest personality too. Roscoe was found as a stray and ended up in a county shelter before Suncoast Basset Rescue got the call to help. While we are not exactly sure of his age, Roscoe definitely seems to be on the younger side. His teeth are in great shape, and he appears to be healthy and well cared for overall. Even better, he is a very good boy — well behaved, rides nicely in the car, and gets along well with kids and other dogs. At this time, we are not sure how he does with cats. Roscoe is handsome, sweet, and already showing everyone what a wonderful companion he is.

Story
Meet Leia. We don’t know much about her past, but we do know that her future is only going up from here. Leia is believed to be around 4 years old, and based on her condition, we suspect she may have had at least one litter of puppies. She arrived very, very thin, but we’re already working on getting some weight on her. The good news is she has a wonderful appetite and is happily cleaning up everything her foster mom is offering. Leia is absolutely beautiful and incredibly sweet, but she is also very scared and skittish. Quick movements, new people, and sudden noises can make her nervous. She can be extremely submissive, and we believe she likely hasn’t had much socialization in her short lifetime. Her foster mom is gently helping her learn that she is safe, building her confidence, and showing her that no one is going to hurt her. Despite her fears, Leia is great with other dogs and does very well on her walks. She clearly takes comfort from her canine friends, and because of this, she will need a home with another confident dog to help show her the way in this human world. A securely fenced yard will also be important so she can safely explore and continue building confidence at her own pace. Leia’s next steps include a full wellness exam with our vet, followed by getting her scheduled for her spay. With patience, love, and a calm environment, we know this sweet girl is going to blossom into a wonderful companion.

Story
Meet Norris! At just 4 months old, Norris is already showing what a smart and social pup he is. He would thrive in a forever home with an active, playful dog, as he absolutely loves having friends and playing with them. Norris enjoys being part of the action and is happiest when he has a buddy to romp around with. A securely fenced yard is required so he can safely run, explore, and burn off his puppy energy. This bright young boy already knows “sit,” will sit and wait politely for his food bowl, uses a doggie door, and has mastered using a ramp to get in and out of his foster mom’s bed — also known as the big dog bed. He sleeps snuggled up all night without accidents, and on the rare occasion he needs a midnight potty break, he will wake his foster mom to let her know.Norris is doing great with handling, is good for nail trims, and hasn’t shown any fear of thunderstorms. He is currently working on polishing his potty training and learning to take treats gently. He has also shown that he doesn’t need to be crated when his foster mom goes out, even for longer periods of time.Like many curious puppies, Norris is discovering the world around him — including the kitchen garbage can and the exciting possibility of counter surfing. His new family should be ready to stay one step ahead of this clever, growing pup. Norris is a sweet, affectionate, and playful youngster who is ready to bring fun, snuggles, and a little bit of puppy mischief to his forever home.
