Story
This 2-year-old, 11lb Chihuahua mix is as smart and soulful as her name suggests—a true little muse in a tiny package! Frida was found as a stray with her one-week-old puppy and brought to the Downey Animal Shelter. With no microchip and no one coming to claim her, Shelter Hope took her in and placed her in the safety of foster care, where she lovingly raised her pup like the devoted mama she is. Now it’s Frida’s turn to shine! Frida is sweet, observant, and incredibly affectionate. She absolutely adores being in your arms and will happily leap into them—she’s quite the little jumper! Whether she’s cuddling close or keeping a careful watch on her surroundings, Frida is always tuned in to her people. She’s been thriving in her foster home and is ready for the next chapter of her life: a forever home filled with love, security, and soft places to snuggle. If you're looking for a loyal, loving companion with a big heart and an even bigger personality, Frida Pawlo is your girl! More from her foster: I'm writing to share a bit about Frida Pawlo, who is truly a special dog. She arrived with her puppy, Monet and was initially quite scared and timid, even barking at my husband. However, within just two days, she transformed, jumping onto our laps and giving us kisses. Frida is incredibly smart, loves spending time in the yard, and is a loyal watch dog. Seeing her gently play with her puppy was absolutely heartwarming. She also has a fondness for sticks, jerky, and plenty of cuddles. —---- Looking to Adopt? Submit a Rescue Questionnaire! Story
Shade is an adorable 1.5-year-old and 12 lb Chihuahua mix. She was pulled from a high-kill shelter alongside her two little puppies. As black dogs, they were at an even greater disadvantage due to Black Dog Syndrome (BDS), where black-coated pups, especially Chihuahuas, are so often overlooked. That is exactly why we took them in, to make sure this little family was given safety, care, and the loving chance they truly deserve at finding forever homes. Shade is the sweetest, most loving little mama dog you could meet. She’s gentle, nurturing, and full of joy. She absolutely loves being around people, snuggling close, soaking up attention, or curling up in your lap for a cozy nap. She’s also playful and curious, always ready to explore, chase a toy, or have a fun wrestle with her puppies. She is wonderful with kids and other dogs too! Now that her puppies are grown and ready for homes of their own, Shade is ready to step into the spotlight and receive the love, comfort, and devotion she poured so fully into her babies. Fully vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed, Shade is looking for her forever home! ---------- Looking to Adopt? Submit a Rescue Questionnaire! Please be thorough in your answers. Story
On New Year’s Eve, as heavy rain fell in Victorville, California, a homeless man pleaded for help—not for himself, but for his three dogs. We received a text from a Good Samaritan who was willing to pick them up and bring them to us if we could take them in. Chihuahuas are among the least adoptable dogs and, heartbreakingly, are some of the most euthanized in California shelters. Shelter Hope is full of them too. But on this New Year’s Day, we somehow found room for three more. One of them is Donna Shimmer, a 2-year-old Chihuahua mix weighing 12 pounds. We got her fixed, vaccinated, and microchipped. We believe she may be the mama of the other two dogs who came in with her. Donna is friendly, sweet, and loves attention and pets. She does well with other dogs, though she can be protective of her food—likely because she’s been starved living on the streets. As she settles in, we’re still getting to know her personality. ------ Looking to Adopt? Submit a Rescue Questionnaire! Please be thorough in your answers. Story
Swirl is a very sweet 4 month old, 9 lb Chihuahua mix who has already been through more than any puppy should. She came from the Lancaster Shelter, a high kill shelter, along with her mama and her brother. As black dogs, they were at an even greater disadvantage due to Black Dog Syndrome, where black coated pups, especially Chihuahuas, are often overlooked. That is exactly why we stepped in, to make sure this little family was given safety, care, and a real chance at finding loving forever homes. Swirl is a fun loving puppy with a very sweet soul. Swirl has a gentle, submissive nature and a soft, loving heart. She can be a little shy at first and may take some time to warm up, but once she feels safe, she truly blossoms. She loves people, cuddles, and affection, and enjoys being close to those she trusts. While she is sweet and calm, she also has a playful, quirky side and is known to stand up on her two legs, which never fails to make people smile. She does great with other dogs and kids too! At her vet check they discovered that she has rectal prolapse, but thanks to the Diane Warren Foundation, a grant will cover her surgery and all of the care she needs, so her future family can focus on what matters most, giving her love, comfort, and a happy life. Now fixed, vaccinated, and microchipped, Swirl is ready for her forever home! More from her foster: She is scheduled for surgery on Thursday. She’s getting more comfortable in new environments, especially with big dogs. She sits comfortably in my lap. She’s full of love and will be the perfect addition to any family!! ------ Looking to Adopt? Submit a Rescue Questionnaire! Please be thorough in your answers. Story
Meet Oliver Twist, a pint-sized Chihuahua with a whole lot of personality packed into just 5 tiny pounds. He is a 5-year-old Chi who may be small, but he definitely knows who he is. Oliver was found wandering the streets of Compton with no collar and no microchip. A kind Good Samaritan took him in and searched for his owner, but after being posted on Nextdoor and receiving no responses, it became clear that no one was coming for him. Once his stray hold was complete, Oliver was brought to Shelter Hope so he could have the best chance at finding the forever home he deserves. When he arrived, it was clear that life on the streets had taken its toll. His nails were badly overgrown and his teeth were in need of a good cleaning. Since then, Oliver has received the TLC he needed, including a dental and neuter, and he has been thriving in foster care. His foster says he is a great boy who has truly settled in and begun to show his true colors. Oliver is a sweet boy with lots of spunk! He likes to use his voice to express himself and has a little spice to his attitude, but it is all talk. Beneath that tough-guy act is a charming, endearing little dog who just wants to feel safe and respected. Now fixed, vaccinated, and microchipped, Oliver Twist is ready for a home that will appreciate his sass, understand his signals, and love him for exactly who he is. He is proof that the best things really do come in small, spicy packages. —---- Looking to Adopt? Submit a Rescue Questionnaire! Please be thorough in your answers.
