Maggie came to us very pregnant with puppies . She is so glad to be done with having puppies ! Maggie is a very devoted loving dog to her person now that she does not have a family to protect. She does struggle with change and needs some grace when adjusting . This gal loves to snuggle and is a velcro dog . She is good with other dogs and respectful to cats. She is used to sleeping with her person . We are requiring her to go to a home with a fenced in yard. Our application is at stlsdp.org.

Story
Hi, I'm Cordelia! I'm a senior lady who has sadly had to come back to the shelter in hopes of finding my last forever home. I was adopted a few years ago and loved dearly but sadly my owner had to go to a nursing home and so I'm back here. I'm a sweet girl but I do have diabetes and a hard time seeing/hearing. Can you give a loving senior girl like me my last home? If you're interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application online at www.polkcountyhumanesociety.org/adopt where you will also find a link to reserve me for an appointment. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice monthly. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports to Colorado and Iowa, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veterinarian ($35). For transports to St. Louis, the additional fee is $50 to help cover gas. Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! All of our pets are neutered or spayed, have vaccinations appropriate for their age, treated with flea/tick/heartworm prevention, dewormed and dogs are also microchipped. #adoptdontshop   ##1492386##

Story
Meet Nellie!      This sweet little lady is around 12 pounds of pure love! Nellie is believed to be a long-haired Chihuahua mix and came to us from a hoarding situation in rural Missouri. Despite her rough start, she’s full of wiggles and joy—always ready to greet you with a happy dance!    Nellie is learning all about the big, wide world for the first time.  She recently graduated from the Puppies for Parolees training program and did amazing with her training!  She is potty trained, walks perfectly on a leash and has a little bit of sass in step!  Nellie learned all her basic commands and gained some confidence in the process!!   When she first arrived, Nellie was suffering from severe hair loss due to a flea infestation, but with care and love, her coat has come back beautifully!    Nellie is great with dogs, cats, and gentle kiddos - she does not appreciate when other dogs get up in her face.  A princess needs a little personal space sometimes!  She’s truly a little sweetheart looking for a home where she can continue to blossom.   Could you be the one to show Nellie what a forever home looks like? If you are interested, complete the  Adoption Application  on our website at  www.NeedyPaws.org  and we will contact you.  Adopters must live within an hour’s drive of St. Louis, MO. Nellie's adoption fee is $295.00, which includes up-to-date vaccinations, heartworm testing and preventative, spay/neuter and microchip. We are a 100% foster-based rescue and all of our dogs live in approved foster homes. We are dedicated to finding the best Forever Homes, and will perform home visits and conduct veterinarian and reference checks for each potential adopter. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.January 18, 2026, 3:48 pm

Story
Meet Picadilly, a 5 year old 10 pound Chihuahua Pug mix.  Picadilly is full of life and loves life and all that goes with it.  She’s a happy fun curious little girl.  She’s very loveable and she loves to nuzzle her head under your chin. Picadilly gets along well with the other dogs in her foster home and sees the cat as just another dog.   She gets the zoomies about once a day and after that you will find her sleeping calmly in her dog bed.  After a long day, she enjoys relaxing next to you or on your lap on the couch. Picadilly does tend to be a barker, especially if she sees a squirrel outside the window or in the yard, so she would probably not be good for apartment living.  She would also be best in a home with older children who will respect her boundaries.  She’s mostly potty trained if she’s taken out often.  She sleeps in the kitchen at night with her foster siblings, but I’m sure she’d rather be in bed with you. She loves her toys and her treats.  She does tend to get a little cranky if she thinks another dog might be wanting her food.  After all she lived in a home with 2 large dogs and 3 other small dogs, so I’m sure they had a little challenge all getting enough to eat.  She’s just waiting for her home and could that be you. If you are interested, complete the  Adoption Application  on our website at  www.NeedyPaws.org  and we will contact you.  Adopters must live within an hour’s drive of St. Louis, MO.
