Story
Buckwheat is a 10 year old Chorkie. Unfortunately our other dog no longer gets along with Buckwheat so we feel it’s best to find him another home that is safe. However Buckwheat doesn’t have a problem and gets along well with other dogs, cats, and people alike. We feel he would do best with a family that is home more often than not. He enjoys being around people and has some separation anxiety when alone which causes some whining. He is crate trained and goes in it for bed but would do fine without being in it as well. He knows to sit, stay, and down for commands. He is a fun spunky guy who is laid back and wands to find his forever home. He enjoys squeaky toys treats and snuggles on the couch.

Story
Meet Toby! Hi all, I’m Toby! Foster mom says I’m a “cute little squeak.” I’m not sure what she means, since I hardly make a peep except when I’m being a guard dog (like us little chihuahuas have to be). I'm a senior guy, weighing just 8 pounds, but I could stand to lose one pound to be a healthy weight I was surrendered to a shelter when my owner could no longer keep me and boy was it scary! It's hard to be a little guy in a big world sometimes. But Albert’s took me in, and I’m getting comfy in my foster home day by day. I love getting pets. I was surrendered with my sister Molly, and we’ve always lived together, but we aren’t bonded. In my foster home, I live with lots of other dogs, and I get along with them, but sometimes I have to tell them who is boss (me, obviously). I also get along with respectful kiddos, but I won't seek their attention. I just kind of like hanging out. I love lounging in a soft dog bed or even in my crate (it's my quiet place). I don’t mind being crated at all, in fact, but I’m house trained and don’t destroy anything, so I don’t need to be crated. I do well on a leash and really enjoy going for walks, but my stride is much shorter than yours! I recently had a dental cleaning, and I had a lot of my teeth removed (I guess that is what you get when you don’t brush!). Foster mom says it’ll give me “fresh breath.” I’m also being treated for anaplasma and lymes disease (both caused by tick bites). I don’t have any symptoms, and I probably never will, but Albert’s just wants to make sure I get extra good care. I'm hoping that will be with you! *Toby is being fostered in Madison, WI. Albert's Dog Lounge is a specialty rescue focusing primarily on senior and special needs dogs. Our process includes an approved application, reference checks, a homevisit, and then a meet and greet with the dog. Adoption fee is $300, ($550 for a pair). Story
Nacho is being fostered in VA. Nacho, a beautiful, sweet, and smart chihuahua mix, was turned into a shelter in Virginia in early January 2024 after her owner was no longer able to care for her. After just a couple days in the shelter, she was pulled by the Blind Dog Rescue and is now in a Virginia BDRA foster home. Nacho was seriously ill when she arrived at her foster home. She was taken immediately to the vet and it was determined she has diabetes. She is now on insulin injections twice a day and she is doing much better (she is currently using Vetsulin). While her blood glucose levels are not always within range, she has been doing so great – she is active, eating well, no peeing or pooping inside, etc. – and seems very healthy. Periodically she will need a glucose curve completed, which can be done at the vet or can be done with a continuous glucose monitor at home. She is good with getting her insulin injections. She was very thin when she arrived at her foster home (7 pounds) but has gained some weight and now weighs about 10 pounds. She looks terrific! She can see some although may bump into things too; she does have bilateral cataracts and dry eye, and she is on Optimmune once a day to treat the dry eye. Optimmune is completely controlling the dry eye and she is a very good sport about this medicine being put into her eyes. She can hear well and seems to understand some words, including “out” when it is time for her to go outside for a walk in the yard. She has a grade I-II heart murmur that requires no treatment. Because she had rabies certificate from her prior owner that indicated she was not spayed, she was taken to the vet for her spay and, once she was under anesthesia and her belly was shaved, there was a faint scar just where a spay scar would be. The vet felt she has been spayed because of the scar and also because she has no mammary development which would have been typical for a dog who had not been altered. So, she got a dental done instead; she had her teeth cleaned and 7 teeth pulled and she made it through the procedure like a champ. Nacho has settled into her foster home. She learned the routine pretty quickly! She loves to eat; she is generally a quiet dog but just before mealtime she gets loud and, when she knows the food bowl is coming, her tail wags so hard as she turns in a circle. She is a little sad, though, that she is not allowed snacks since diabetic dogs should just eat twice a day; she loves to eat! She sleeps quietly through the night in an indoor pen. She is housetrained. She doesn’t mind the leash. She likes to be outside to walk around and smell all the smells. She can walk up and down the two steps that connect the deck to the yard but could have trouble walking up and down a flight of stairs; at her foster home, she is always on the first floor. When she is going to be picked up, she likes a pat on her head and to hear a few words from her foster parents first (instead of just picking her up without touching her and talking to her first); then she is glad to be picked up and she likes to be carried around. The person who adopts Nacho should be prepared to go slowly with her, especially at the beginning, until she knows the routine and the people in her home. She now loves attention from her foster parents, and especially loves her head and her belly rubbed. She also doesn’t mind sitting in a lap either! And she is excited to sit on the sofa in the evenings with her foster mom along with other dogs that live in her home. She also gets excited when her foster parents come home after being out of the house running errands. Nacho generally ignores the other dogs in the home but she has not liked it if one of them (the ones who are blind) bumps into her bed when she is in it. She also does not like it when they bump into her before mealtime when all the dogs are excited and moving around. So, she is kept separate from the other dogs in the foster home, although she sees them outside and may even get very close to them, and she ignores them. She also ignores them when she sees them at the gate that separates her room from their room. Nacho’s foster parents think she could be fine in a home with other dogs who can see (so they would not accidentally bump into her or her bed), but there is no guarantee of that, so she would be best as the only dog in the house. And she would love being the only dog so she would get all the attention! And, while she loves attention, she is also just fine taking a nap when her foster parents are busy. She loves to bury herself under the blankets so you can’t even tell she is there. She is interested in the smell of the family cat but does not try to chase her, and does not bark at her or seem upset about the cat. But Nacho has a very good nose on her, and can tell if the cat has walked by or if a strange dog has been in the yard and she will become alert and walk in the direction of the smell. Nacho would not be good in a home with young children. Young children tend to move quickly and unpredictably, and she may not be happy about that. Nacho is ready for the perfect forever home! If you think you might be able to provide the perfect home for Nacho, fill out an application today! If you have questions about what it might be like to live with a dog with diabetes, please speak with your vet. And please know it is not hard! And Nacho is worth the effort! And remember the Blind Dog Rescue can work out a transport to get Nacho to you (within reasonable distance). BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.

Story
Kimmy is being fostered in PA. Update: 8/25/24 Kimmy has had her double cherry eye surgery, was spayed and recovered extremely well. She is on cyclosporine drops for a few more weeks and then she should not need any eye drops. She does have a luxating patella (kneecap that is a bit loose) that her foster mom wouldn’t have even noticed if the vet didn’t find it upon examination. No treatment is necessary at this time. She also has a cute habit of placing her tip toes of her one back foot on the floor when standing and /or eating. She has scar tissue on her one toe from an older injury so she may have gotten in the habit of favoring that foot when she was a stray. There is no sign of injury or discomfort at other times and it does not limit her at all. Her playful mouthiness is almost completely non existent unless she is extremely excited but she is very easily redirected with a chew toy. Kimmy continues to charm everyone she meets and even those who observe her from a distance. Her foster mom and others describe her as the perfect girl. Kimmy’s vision has improved to excellent since her eye infection and cherry eyes have been corrected. She does not appear to have visual impairments at this time but if she does, they are minor. She is a wonderful lap dog, loves her human and is good on a leash. Kimmy is a sweet, young, little girl who has transitioned into her foster home very quickly. Her breed is a guess of possibly chihuahua and papillon? Her pictures show her double cherry eyes but they are going to be surgically corrected on August 9th, 2024. Over the past month Kimmy's vision has been upgraded to good in both eyes!! Her poor vision was significantly restored with proper care and vetting once she came into rescue. Kimmy loves playing with humans or other dogs who do not mind her puppy energy. Two of the dogs in Kimmy's foster home are small and Kimmy's age and the three of them are beginning to play and run together. She is a submissive girl once she gets to know and trust the other dogs she comes in contact with. She is very smart and catches on quickly to redirection and correction when she becomes "mouthy", using her teeth to go after hands, only when playing as puppies do. She never purposefully bites, she has just never had social skills taught to her since she came from being on the streets. Kimmy loves people and is most often found lying on her foster mom's lap or right beside her on the sofa. She loves to be pet anywhere and everywhere. Overall, Kimmy is a very quiet and calm girl, especially for her young age. Kimmy rides very well in the car. Kimmy is doing amazing with house training, as she uses a crate when her foster mom is not home and is taken outside immediately when her mom gets home. She has a very occasional accident in the house but that's amazing for the short time she's been living inside a home. This little lady is going to make a perfect little companion for someone! BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.
