This little guy approaches every day like it’s a brand-new adventure, whether he’s zooming around the yard, investigating a squeaky toy, or finding creative ways to make you laugh. This dog's adoption fee is $600 and includes up-to-date vaccinations, microchip, and neuter. Melvin is also tested with other dogs, cats, and children. He is working on potty and kennel training in foster care. We would love for you to meet this dog and see if he might be a good fit for your home. Pending approval, your application is valid for 1 year, and you will be eligible to request a hold on an individual animal for the Saturday adoption event. The hold does not require that you take the animal home, but ensures you get to meet and make an adoption decision prior to other applicants. Also pending approval, you will be able to acquire foster home contact information, so you inquire on personalities of specific animals. We do offer midweek private adoption appointments for approved applicants pending staff, foster home, and vetting schedules. Because we are 100% foster-based, private adoption appointments are only offered for individual animals. Don’t let his tiny size fool you — this little dachshund mix puppy is full of love. Around 4 months old, he’s deaf, but that doesn’t slow him down one bit. He unfortunately found himself in an overrun shelter in Texas. We couldn't say no to his cute face. He’s a total sweetheart who loves people, cuddles, and following his humans around with his adorable puppy confidence. He may experience the world a little differently, but he’s just as playful, smart, and loving as any other puppy — and honestly, maybe even more special. He’s looking for a patient, kind home ready to help him grow into the amazing dog he’s meant to be. June 2026 update from the foster family:  Pilot is a smart, playful, cuddly, and friendly puppy. He’s got striking ice blue eyes, a red/tan dapple coat, and he is deaf due to a double merle(dapple)gene mutation. He’s a Dachshund mix and he’s almost 6 months old. He’s very smart and he pays close attention to see what the humans and other animals are doing so he can be a part of the group. He learns signs quickly and he is getting started with wearing an e-collar to help him know when he needs to pause and see what the human wants. He loves to play, chew on toys and sticks, fetch (for a short time), dig, go on walks, and snuggle. He’s looking for a forever home where he can learn to understand and communicate without sound. He’s going to need to have regular veterinary check ups to monitor his vision and other potential issues that can arise from his double merle genetic condition. His skin on his face and his eyes will need to be carefully protected from the sun so he can better avoid sunburns, skin cancer, and cataracts because he is way more susceptible to those than other dogs who don’t have the double merle genes. Like all dachshunds, but also due to his higher risk as a double merle, he will need to be kept from jumping off of things or using a lot of stairs to protect his long spine and short legs. More than the average dog, he will need at least annual vet visits to monitor his health and keep him safe. He’s currently a healthy and strong boy. He likes pretty much all dogs and people, and he's been good with cats. He is very interested in our guinea pigs, so I don't leave him alone near them. Luckily, he comes away from them when I signal to him and he readliy accepts diversions. He sleeps on our bed through the night. He likes his crate and he will readily enter it and he settles down quickly if we need him to stay there. He benefits from having other dogs to take cues from since he can't hear, and this seems to be an important accomodation for him. The rescue environment itself also does not always allow for extensive one-on-one training. While we work hard to provide safety, basic structure, and socialization, adopters should expect to continue all training and development after adoption. Sly is a 3.5MO little Dachshund/Chi mix weighing about 8lbs.  Their breed is a guess as we can't be certain.  We are guessing Sly will be about 15-20lbs when full grown.  Sly and his 3 siblings, along with his Momma, were part of a hoarding case in Texas.  There were over 40 dogs in the home and the small local shelter needed help finding places for the dogs to go.  We were able to help this sweet Momma and her 3 puppies.  They have now been in Colorado for a few weeks and are ready to find their very own forever families. Sly is a little shy at first, but oh so sweet.  He warms up quickly and wants nothing more than to be loved.  He gets along great with other dogs big and small, and all humans.  His socialization is coming along great and gets gaining confidence every day. He would do great in a home with another dog, or with someone who has lots of time to raise a puppy.  He will be the perfect size for daily walks/hikes/adventures, AND to be the perfect little lap-dog/snuggle buddy.
