Q LOVEs: couch buddy, walk on leash, hike off leash, returns when called, car rides, dog parks, potty trained, all shots current, healthy, 17lb, 10yrs He came to me 2yrs ago, was considered "challenging dog" - I took him bc I'm a vanlifer and could provide time/energy to train him. We've done well, now ready for a home that can give him a bit more space than a van (apt/house both are great) CURRENT NEEDS: some body handling sensitivity remains. For washing him, walk in shower is great. He doesn't like nail trims and tooth brushing, but loves dental treats! I'm happy to share all I've learned. He will do amazing w someone who is willing to build trust and continue train. TRANSPARENCY: he has bit me in very early stage bc I tried to bathe him w/o proper knowledge. He now enjoys warm shower on his body bc I educated myself. It's often the humans, not the dogs!

Meet Cleo the Chi Weenie! Her and our other dog Sweet Potato are from the same hoarder which means they are use to living with a lot of other dogs in a nasty house where they have never been walked on a leash or been outside before. They need someone that is patience with them while they learn new things and preferably have another dog their own size in their home that can teach them things and be their comfort Right now she is a pretty scared and nervous girl but is getting braver everyday. She started to trust her foster parents after a couple days of giving her space and going at her pace. We do not recommend young kids in the home, she would need a quiet environment. She has warmed up to the other dogs in her foster home and is starting to play with the other little dog. She is not fully potty trained yet and will need to continue using a crate and working on this so she understands that we dont potty inside anymore. She’s doing well with a structured routine with crate time immediately followed by outside time. Everyday she comes out of her shell more and more and just needs someone that isnt expecting cuddles day one but will cuddle you day 5. Once she trusts you she is very sweet and loves affection. All POSO Dogs come with: - Spayed/Neutered - Basic Shots (age appropriate) - Fecal and 4dx testing - other medical concerns addressed before adoption - 2 Free one on one dog training sessions with a professional dog trainer - Training received in foster home - Basic things like some food, treats, leash and collar - PDFs of training material and local coupons and dog sitter recommendations

Story
Ruby is a stinkin' adorable, super silly, short legged, 1 year old, 12 pound Dachshund / Chihuahua mix. She was rescued from a dog hoarding situation in New Mexico where she lived with 30+ dogs and sadly never (until now) got treated right, loved, or shown what it means to be someone’s cherished pet. Ruby must go to a home with at least one other small, confident dog. Ruby is much more confident and happy with doggy friends around her (that is all she's ever known!) and we want to do what is in Ruby's best interest when finding her a forever home. From Ruby's foster: * * * * "Ruby is an incredibly sweet girl and once her personality comes out, you'll see that she really is just a sweet, young puppy!!! She has made a complete 180 since the day she came home with me. When she first came home to foster, she was straight from the hoarding home to the shelter, to me... so life was scary back then! But now Ruby is a complete puppy!!! She is so silly, playful, loving, and friendly!!! She loves me and my husband, follows me around the house, kisses us on our faces, sits on our laps, and snuggles us at night. She just took some patience in the beginning, and had to learn that she could trust us. I think no humans had ever treated her right until now. But I do think that her transition into an adoptive home will be much faster / easier since she isn't in such a scary place of life anymore. She has totally blossomed into an amazing, silly, happy dog! Assuming there will still be a slight adjustment period in a new home, I will let you know how her integration into our home went so potential adopters can know sort of what to expect (though again, I think she will warm up a lot faster now that she is a happy, puppy dog). When Ruby first came home with us, she was very shy and a bit fearful when it came to human touch (i.e. she would run from us if we tried to pet or touch her) but other than around being touched, she’s actually been quite confident from the beginning. From the second day home, she was already playing with toys, relaxing on the couch, playing with my dogs, jumping into bed at night, getting the zoomies around the living room, and would even crawl all over us if we’re eating in front of her (she has no shame there, haha - she LOVES food!) Just for the first about 1 and a half, maybe 2 weeks, Ruby was very hesitant of being touched by us. She would touch us no problem (like crawl onto us when we were eating), but did not want us to touch her. For the first maybe week and a half, she would run and hide under our couch when we would reach towards her. So we basically ignored her besides feeding her and giving her treats for the first week and let her come around to us on her own terms. You cannot gain trust when you do not respect their boundaries! We let her come around to us on her own terms, and boy did she ever come around! I'm telling you, seeing the dog she is now, you would never believe she was so timid at first!! When Ruby came home with me, she wasn't crate trained or potty trained, but she is SO stinking smart that she picked up on both of these SO fast! She is super food motivated so that helped a lot. She's been with us for a month now. For the first 2 weeks, since she was still decompressing from her old, scary life, I didn't take her outside to the yard (I didn't trust that she would follow me back inside so didn't want to risk her getting stuck in our yard!) so we used potty pads for the first 2 weeks but she knew already to potty on those which was great. After 2 weeks home with me, as she started to be comfortable around me, I started letting her come out in the yard with me and my dogs, and in literally 4 days she picked up potty training. Now we are days without an accident, and she goes outside every time! We leave a bag of treats outside and right when she potties I say "yes!!" and give her a treat. She also gets a treat when she goes into her crate, and when I open the door to the room with our dog crates, she runs right into her crate. She stays in a crate when we leave the house. I have had her loose (the first 2 weeks she was home) when I left the house, and she did fine loose, but our house is very dog-proof so there's nothing she could get in to. But she never chewed on anything. Ruby is definitely a young dog with puppy energy. She needs some basic training, but is SO smart and trainable. She can be kind of mischievous, but no more than any other young dog. She likes to jump from our couch onto the coffee table, she thinks the mulch pieces in our yard are fun toys, and she would eat our food out of our hands if we let her. (Have I mentioned she loves food? haha) But she's just a baby!! Luckily, she's never chewed on anything in our house but the dog toys. She also needs to learn how to walk on a leash. She clearly has never been on a leash in her life. Because she doesn't know how to walk on a leash yet, she should go to a home with a yard, otherwise she may regress with her potty training. But again, she is so smart and trainable. She will learn fast! Just prepare for an adjustment period for the first week or so, and be patient at first. Ruby is SUCH a good, sweet, smart little dog and that will show once she feels comfortable and safe." * * * * We'd like to place Ruby in a home where she'll get the training and stability that she needs. Positive reinforcement training promotes great behavior, bonding and confidence for a young girl whose self-esteem will fly high while she masters her skills. Training is so important in the future behaviors of every dog. It's for this reason that we're unwilling to adopt to a family that doesn't make this loving choice. Farfel's is happy to provide a list of both in-person and virtual positive reinforcement / force- free trainers in your area. Ruby has been fully vetted, and she is in great health and up to date on her vaccines. She is spayed as well. Farfel's Rescue is a fully foster based rescue, and offers a one week trial with every adoption. We feel that this is much more beneficial to not only the dog, but the adopter too. We believe that only getting 20-30 minutes with a dog before deciding on a lifetime commitment is not a fair amount of time to the adopter, or the dog. Therefore we give adopters one week with the dog to assure it is the right fit, and offer a full refund of their adoption fee should it not workout within the week trial. Farfel's Rescue has been doing adoptions this way since 2005 and is thrilled to adopt out ~400 dogs each year. If you are interested in adopting from us, please be sure to fill out our adoption application at http://farfels.com/farfels-rescue/adoption-form/ .

Hi, I'm Nora! I'm an 8 year old girl that is special needs. I have diabetes insipidus which you can read more about online but basically it is not treated with insulin. Currently I am on a medication for it twice daily and it seems to be helping. I'm a sweet girl but not a fan of other animals so I'm looking to be your one and only. What do you say? Take a senior girly home and love me forever.  If you're interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application online at www.polkcountyhumanesociety.org/adopt where you will also find a link to reserve me for an appointment. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice monthly. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports to Colorado and Iowa, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veterinarian ($35). For transports to St. Louis, the additional fee is $50 to help cover gas. Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! All of our pets are neutered or spayed, have vaccinations appropriate for their age, treated with flea/tick/heartworm prevention, dewormed and dogs are also microchipped. #adoptdontshop ##2620129##

Story
** If you are interested in adopting Cookie, please fill out our adoption application at http://farfels.com/farfels-rescue/adoption-form/ ** Meet Cookie! Cookie is an adorable, 1-year-old, 35 lb Basset Hound / Blue Heeler mix with big floppy ears, short stubby legs, and the most beautiful markings you can imagine. This handsome lowrider turns heads everywhere he goes, and once you meet him, he’ll steal your heart too. Cookie was found as a stray in New Mexico, and nobody came to claim him. Cookie is an absolute sweetheart. He is very social, loves people, and happily soaks up affection, pets, and cuddles whenever they’re offered. He does wonderfully with other dogs and would love a canine buddy in his forever home, but he is happy with people attention as well so a buddy is not a necessity. He enjoys playtime but is equally content lounging around and enjoying good company. Cookie walks well on leash, has an easygoing and well-mannered personality, and carries a low to medium energy level — the perfect balance of playful and chill. He’s the kind of dog who fits seamlessly into daily life and makes everything a little sweeter just by being there. Since Cookie is so young, he is a blank slate just waiting for a kind and patient human to show him the way. With positive reinforcement training, he has all the potential in the world to be a loyal, well-mannered adult companion. He’ll thrive with virtual or in-person force-free training classes, which will help strengthen his bond with his humans and build him confidence. Cookie is up to date on his vaccinations and is neutered. When Cookie arrived to the New Mexico shelter, they noticed a slightly awkward limp. X-rays and a full veterinary evaluation revealed that this is simply an old injury or possible birth defect — his right hind femur is a bit shorter than the other. There are no fractures, no broken bones, and no signs of pain, and the veterinarian confirmed that no treatment of any kind is needed now or in the future. Cookie bears weight on the leg, gets around just fine, and his unique little “pirate walk” (affectionately known as his peg leg) only adds to his charm and character. Applications are currently being accepted for our wonderful pup. If interested in this gorgeous, very cuddly/sweet and loving best friend, please fill out an application completely at http://farfels.com/farfels-rescue/adoption-form/ and submit. **PLEASE NOTE** If you're truly interested in adopting from us, please be sure to fill out our Farfel's Rescue adoption application found at the link above or at farfels.com. Adoption site applications such as Petfinder and Adoptapet don't provide enough information and therefore aren't useful. Our Farfel's application is the only initial tool that we have to determine a great match for this very deserving dog. We're sorry, but in many cases, we're unable to get back to those that don't submit our Farfel's Rescue adoption application. Thanks very much for choosing rescue.
