Story
Meet Sophie! Sophie is a beautiful 10-year-old Dutch Shepherd who proves that age is just a number. While she may be entering her golden years, this lovely lady still has plenty of life, curiosity, and love left to share with the lucky family who welcomes her home. Sophie is the definition of a gentle soul. She enjoys the company of people and other dogs, but she`s not one for chaos or drama. She`s happiest in calm environments where she can take things at her own pace and enjoy the simple pleasures in life. When meeting new people, Sophie is friendly and approachable, though she appreciates gentle introductions and respectful handling. She`s affectionate without being demanding and enjoys spending time near her people, quietly soaking up companionship and attention. Around other dogs, Sophie is polite and social but prefers friends who share her mature outlook on life. While she`ll happily exchange greetings and gentle sniffs, she isn`t interested in overly rambunctious playmates. In fact, if another dog comes on too strong, Sophie is quick to excuse herself and create some space. She`s a classy lady who prefers manners over mayhem. Despite being a senior, Sophie still enjoys getting out for walks, exploring her surroundings, and staying active. She has a moderate energy level and would benefit from regular exercise and enrichment balanced with plenty of opportunities to relax and recharge. Sophie can occasionally show signs of stress or uncertainty in busy environments, and she appreciates slow, patient introductions to new situations. Because of this, she would likely be happiest in a calm household without young children. Sophie has spent a lifetime gathering wisdom, and now she`s ready to enjoy the rewards of a loving forever home. She`s not looking for constant excitement—just a comfortable bed, a kind family, and someone to share her days with. If you`ve been searching for a loyal companion who still enjoys life`s adventures but knows the value of slowing down to enjoy the moment, Sophie may be your perfect match. Come meet this sweet senior girl and discover why the best dogs only get better with age.

Story
Hello! My ex-wife and I adopted Brisket from Front Street Animal Shelter in Sacramento when she was under a year old in early 2020. The shelter believes she's a Dutch Shepherd mix. She's fully house-trained, has never had an accident, and doesn’t destroy anything except her toys. Brisket is generally good with people but can get anxious in loud environments (parties, live music, construction) and has nipped at guests before. She barks at outside noises or deliveries with a deep bark, but stops after a few seconds. At home, she’s okay with other dogs as long as they don’t bother her; if they do, she’ll growl or slap them. She also has some leash aggression when directly approaching other dogs during walks. Brisket is very loving but has always been a bit fearful, though she’s improved over time. She’d likely do best in a calm home with someone who enjoys a smart and loving dog.

Story
Update: Unfortunately we have had to return January ("Janet" is our nickname) to the Sacramento County Animal Shelter at Bradshaw (#A875918) ... its a good shelter, but does euthanize animals … so if you think January is for you please see her there.---------------------------------We had January in our home for 2+ weeks and she is a wonderful, playful, loving dog ❤️ ... our current dog was bullying her so we could not keep her.Notes:January is excellent with other dogs.If needed, January took to crate training easily. Every night for over a week, she slept in her crate with the door closed without whining. Though she is not fully trained yet.January’s squirrel interest on walks is 95% alleviated by using a prong collar. We had taken her for many walks and she was doing great.January has learned “sit” and is getting better at “wait” - she can wait before going through the door and before eating from her food bowl. She is treat motivated and eager to be trained on more commands.

Story
Dutchess is a beautiful shepherd girl with a tender heart that’s still learning the world can be a safe place. Right now, she’s very scared — the kind of scared that makes her try to make herself as small and far away as possible when someone approaches her crate. It’s clear she hasn’t had an easy start, and everything feels new and overwhelming. But even in her fear, Dutchess is trying. She allows her leash to be put on and will come out with gentle guidance, showing just how much quiet bravery she has inside. One of her biggest moments so far? When the crate door was open to the yard, with a calm environment and a familiar dog nearby, she found the courage to step outside on her own, go potty, and return to her safe space. It may seem small, but for Dutchess, that was huge. Right now, her crate is where she feels safest — she’s even pushed all the blankets aside to lay on the plastic bottom, seeking comfort in what feels predictable and secure. She’s not ready for the world just yet, but she wants to get there. Dutchess is looking for a very patient, understanding home — one that will give her the time and space she needs to build trust at her own pace. A calm environment, possibly with another gentle, confident dog, could help her continue to come out of her shell. She doesn’t need perfection — she just needs someone willing to meet her where she is and celebrate every tiny victory along the way. Watching Dutchess learn to feel safe will be a journey, but it will also be an incredibly rewarding one. Beneath the fear is a sweet soul just waiting for her chance to shine. If you have a quiet home and a big heart for a dog who needs a little extra love, Dutchess is waiting for you
