Story
Caboose is proof that sometimes the dogs who have been through the most are the ones who have the biggest hearts. This incredible boy was found as a stray and brought into a local shelter. What made his situation even more heartbreaking is that Caboose is paralyzed in his back legs due to IVDD. He had been dragging himself around outside, his back legs covered in scrapes and irritation, and he was also struggling with incontinence. When we heard about Caboose, we knew we had to step in. While he isn’t a pug, we have a huge soft spot for dogs who need a little extra help, and Caboose deserved someone in his corner. Now that he’s with us, the thing that stands out most is just how happy he is.Caboose is about 28 pounds of pure personality. He is loving, silly, and absolutely convinced that life is meant to be enjoyed. He does not spend his days worrying about what he can’t do. He’s too busy showing everyone what he can.And what does Caboose love? Toys. All of them. Especially the squeaky ones. He is a professional toy collector and believes having only one toy at a time is simply unacceptable. You’ll usually find him surrounded by a pile of favorites, ready to pick one up the second someone offers to play.Despite not having use of his back legs, Caboose is incredibly active. In his wheelchair, he absolutely flies. He zips around like he has places to be and people to see. When he’s taking it easy, he uses his “drag-bag” to protect his legs and belly while he scoots around using his front legs.Caboose does need help fully emptying his bladder, but our staff is happy to teach his future adopter how to do this. It may seem intimidating at first, but it quickly becomes part of the routine. He is able to go number 2 on his own, though he doesn’t always know when it’s happening. With other dogs, Caboose actually enjoys dogs who are playful and active which honestly makes sense once you meet him. He may have special needs, but Caboose does not know that he’s supposed to slow down.He is looking for a home with someone who will be around often, willing to learn his routine, and preferably has a huge stockpile of toys waiting for him.Caboose has needed a lot of people to show up for him in his life. Now he’s looking for the person who will be there for good. And we can promise you this: he’ll pay you back with more love, joy, and squeaky-toy enthusiasm than you know what to do with. Story
How adorable is little Chiclet?!? This brave girl is a true survivor with a spirit as big as her heart. Chiclet was found dragging herself around the streets, unable to use her hind legs, before being impounded at a local shelter. Her journey didn’t stop there—shortly after we picked her up, Chiclet had a major health scare and ended up in emergency care. She fought through a pyometra, severe dehydration, and a nasty kidney infection, and somehow, this tough cookie pulled through. Today, she carries a look that says, “I stared death in the face and won!!!”At around 5 years old, Chiclet is a ray of sunshine. She’s sweet to everyone she meets and gets along wonderfully with other dogs. Although she’s paralyzed in her hind legs, that doesn’t slow her down—she’s a pro at scooting around using her front legs, and she thrives when using her wheelchair. Chiclet’s zest for life is nothing short of inspiring!Caring for Chiclet does come with a few special needs. Her bladder and bowels need to be expressed several times a day, but don’t worry—it quickly becomes second nature, and we’re here to guide you every step of the way if you’re new to it. Chiclet would thrive in a home where her adopter isn’t gone for long hours and ideally has experience with special needs dogs—or is ready and willing to learn. In return, Chiclet will shower you with endless love, snuggles, and smiles. She has the kind of heart that can light up a room and the determination to make the best of every day. Chiclet’s journey may have started with challenges, but her future is full of hope. Are you ready to give this incredible little warrior the loving home she deserves? Please inquire today!

Story
Meet Babe! And yes, the name fits.Babe came to us after her care needs became too much for her previous owner to manage. In March 2025 she was diagnosed with IVDD and quickly lost the use of her hind legs. Her previous owner did everything they could for her, including surgery in hopes of helping her regain mobility, but unfortunately it wasn’t successful. Now here’s the important part: Babe does not spend a single second feeling sorry for herself. Actually, if you met her without knowing her story, you’d probably just think, “wow this dog is obsessed with people and snacks.”Babe absolutely loves attention. She loves being cuddled, loved on, doted on, and included in whatever is happening. She also takes treats very seriously and considers herself somewhat of a snack professional. Other dogs? Loves them. Human friends? Loves them too. She is curious, social, and has this really happy little energy about her that pulls people in.While she has very limited use of her hind legs and can’t walk normally, she gets around just fine using her front legs, and when she gets into her wheelchair it’s game over. Suddenly she’s speeding around, cruising from place to place, and acting like she has somewhere very important to be!Babe does need her bladder expressed several times a day because she cannot fully eliminate on her own. We know that can sound intimidating at first, but it becomes routine quickly, and our staff is happy to teach and support her future adopter every step of the way.The thing about Babe is that she never got the memo that she’s supposed to be different. She still wants the same things every dog wants. Attention. Treats. Cuddles. Fun. Someone to love. She’s looking for a home with someone around more often than not, and ideally someone with special needs dog experience or someone excited and willing to learn.Babe isn’t looking for someone to feel bad for her. She’s looking for someone to adore her. And trust us, that part is easy. Interested in this special little lady? Please inquire today!

Story
Chit Chat has quite the story but somehow she’s still the happiest one in the room! This 5-year-old, 20-pound girl was found as a stray completely paralyzed in her back legs. How she managed to survive out there on her own, we’ll never know but what we do know is that she’s tougher than she looks! It’s likely Chit Chat was used for breeding for much of her life, and when her back legs stopped working, she was discarded. Despite everything, she has held onto the sweetest, most loving personality. She’s gentle, friendly, and has this easy, happy way about her that makes people instantly fall for her.Chit Chat likely has IVDD and no longer has sensation in her back end, which means she isn’t in pain, and she truly lives like it. She zooms around using her strong front legs like a pro, cruises happily in her wheelchair, and fully enjoys stroller rides like the little queen she is. She doesn’t sit on the sidelines of life, she participates in it!She loves people, does great with other dogs, and is just genuinely happy to be included in whatever is going on. Car ride? She’s in. Hanging out on the couch? Perfect. Getting attention? Her favorite. She’s the kind of dog who just wants to be near you, part of your day and part of your life.Chit Chat does need her bladder expressed a few times a day since she can’t go on her own. It sounds intimidating at first, but it’s very manageable once you learn, and we’ll make sure you feel completely comfortable before she goes home. What she’s really looking for is someone who sees her for who she is not what she’s missing. Someone who’s around often, willing to learn, and ready to love a dog who gives it right back tenfold. Chit Chat has every reason not to trust the world, but she does anyway. And that kind of spirit is rare. If you’re ready for a dog who will make you smile every single day, Chit Chat is ready for you! Please inquire today!

Story
Meet SALLY JO BROWN. She a sweet 11 year old senior gal who we rescued from West LA shelter. Her former owner lost their home and could no longer keep Sally Jo and her younger sister who was adopted. The volunteers put out a plea for her and now she's with DDR looking for a forever home. Her owner reported she was chill and relaxed with pretty much everything except cats. She lived with children and another dog. They also reported she was housebroken. Sally Jo weighs about 70lbs. Check out her exit from the shelter and video plea here: https://www.instagram.com/p/DFl6AGdRb6K/?img_index=2 Sally Jo has some managable medical issues. She has some masses that were removed, arthritis, chronic ear infections, and an eye issue that is being treated with drops. (Ask us about our forever foster program that can help with these costst.) If you'd like to meet this sweet old lady who just wants a nice walk and a comfy bed, please fill out our brief application at https://downtowndogrescue.org/adoption-questionnaire
