Wezley is about 4 years old, just over 20 pounds, and fully aware that he has opinions.He came to us after being relinquished because he started resource guarding his previous owner from her husband. Wezley takes his people very seriously, what can he say! In the right home, this is something that can be worked on. He is currently on medication for anxiety, and with structure, training, and continued socialization, he has a lot of potential to improve.Now that you know the serious part, here’s the real Wezley:He is a velcro pug in the truest sense. He wants to be near his person, always. He loves cuddles, sunshine, car rides, walks, running around, and rolling in grass like it’s his job. Then he’ll flip the switch and happily go off to sleep on his own like nothing happened.He also knows a ton of cues already: sit, stay, down, spin, roll, speak, wait, shake, outside, and all variations of “food” and “treat.” He is very smart and very food motivated, which is a big advantage for continued training.He does have some things he’s not a fan of, including nail trims, ear cleaning, loud noises, some male humans, and some larger dogs. So he’ll do best with structure, clear boundaries, and someone who understands dog body language and management.Since being with us, Wezley has actually done well with other dogs and all the people he's met! He can groom and relax with other dogs and enjoys being part of a calmer group energy. He also really likes people and is very into attention and belly rubs once he trusts you.Wezley is a lot of dog in a small body. Smart, affectionate, intense about his people, and full of personality. He’s not a beginner dog, but in the right home, he’s going to be deeply loyal and very attached to his person. Story

Rook is a bit of a mystery. Most of the time, he's a quiet guy who would rather hang back and watch the room than be right in the middle of it. Then, every once in a while, something flips a switch and you get a glimpse of his other personality...the one who decides it's time to chase his own tail and go a little bonkers! But underneath the goofy moments is a dog who has had a lot to figure out.Rook is 4 years old and weighs 20 pounds. He originally arrived at the North Central Shelter as an owner surrender, and unfortunately, it was obvious that his previous owner had not been taking care of him. He came in with a large, infected wound on his side and a severely damaged eye. We went and got him and brought him back to Pug Nation so he could finally get the care he needed, and find him the loving forever home he deserves.His eye was in particularly bad shape. He had a melting ulcer that left him completely blind in that eye, although thankfully treatment was enough to save the eye itself and he did not need it removed. His wound has also healed, and physically, Rook is doing much better. Now we're working on the emotional part: teaching Rook that he doesn't have to be on guard anymore.He's still a little unsure about being handled in certain situations. Putting a harness on him can make him reactive, which makes sense considering the trauma he had around his side. There are also some spots where touching him can trigger that frantic tail-chasing episode. These aren't things we're going to pretend don't exist, his adopter should understand his quirks and be willing to let him settle in rather than expecting him to immediately be a perfectly polished houseguest.But spend some time with Rook and you'll see the sweet dog underneath all of that! He LOVES food. And when we say loves food, we mean he takes treats with the enthusiasm of a tiny shark who has just spotted its prey. He's extremely food motivated, which is going to be a huge asset as he continues learning that humans can be safe, predictable, and actually pretty great.He also does well with other dogs and enjoys having canine company around. With people, he's friendly once he's comfortable, but he's not going to be everyone's instant best friend. He's still figuring things out. And that's okay. Rook doesn't need someone who expects him to walk through the door and immediately be perfect. He needs someone who can look at this goofy, special little dog and think, “Okay. We'll figure it out.”For now, we'd recommend a home without small children while he continues building confidence and learning what it feels like to be handled gently. Someone patient, observant, and willing to let Rook set the pace would be ideal. Meet Sidekick! 22 pounds and 5 years old, he first came through a local shelter way back in 2022. At the time he was just a normal happy Pug who was adopted and went off to start his life. But four years later he found himself back at that exact same shelter except this time, he was a completely different dog.He was having a very hard time keeping his balance. His back legs stood unusually wide apart, his steps were exaggerated and unsteady, and every now and then he'd lose his footing and take a tumble. Even eating could be tricky because he gets little tremors when he's trying to reach his food.The shelter was concerned and overwhelmed by his condition, so we brought him into Pug Nation and started looking for answers. Sidekick eventually had an MRI, and unfortunately, it gave us one. His cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for coordination and balance, has undergone degeneration. His condition is called cerebellar abiotrophy, a progressive disease that causes the cerebellum to gradually deteriorate. There isn't a treatment that can reverse it, and eventually his condition will progress.We can't tell you is exactly when, Sidekick could have a limited amount of time. But he could have years. We simply don't know what his timeline will look like. What we do know is what Sidekick is doing with the time he has right now. He's living. And he's really, really good at it.Sidekick is curious about everything. He loves attention and absolutely melts when someone gives him affection. He's a cuddler. He's a sweetheart. He's mellow, gentle, and genuinely happy to be around people. And despite the fact that his body doesn't always cooperate with him, Sidekick doesn't seem particularly interested in letting that stop him from enjoying himself!He gets along wonderfully with other dogs and has been great with everyone he's met. He isn't looking for a complicated life. He wants someone nearby, a comfortable place to rest, some affection, and the chance to be included. Sidekick is a special-needs dog, and his future home will need to understand that his condition is progressive. He needs a patient person who won't mind helping him navigate his environment and who can give him the supervision and care he'll need as things change. Ideally, his person won't be gone for long hours and will either have experience with special-needs dogs or be willing to learn.Because of his prognosis, Sidekick is available either as a long-term foster or through a hospice adoption. We know the word “hospice” can sound heavy. But just look at Sidekick! Right now, he's not thinking about the future. He's thinking about who's going to pet him. He's thinking about what that noise was. He's thinking about whether someone has snacks. He's thinking about what he can investigate next! He's just a happy little dog who wants to be loved.And if his time is shorter than we'd like, then we'd like every single day of it to be full of soft beds, warm laps, gentle hands, good food, and someone telling him what a good boy he is. If there was ever a dog who deserved a fresh start, it's Bindi. Bindi came to us after being surrendered to a local county shelter by her previous owner. It was immediately clear that she hadn't received the care she needed for a very long time, so when we learned she was there we rushed to bring her into our rescue and get her the TLC she needed and find her the forever home she deserves.While at the previous shelter, Bindi came down with a bad case of kennel cough which thankfully has now resolved. She also arrived with severe, long-standing ear infections that were so advanced she needed steroids just to open her ear canals enough for treatment. On top of that, she had significant dental disease requiring multiple extractions, and her coat reflected months if not years of poor nutrition and grooming. Today, she's feeling so much better, eating well, and her soft coat is making a wonderful comeback!Bindi also has some weakness in her back legs and walks with a slight hunch. She takes daily joint supplements, isn't in pain, and still enjoys getting around at her own pace. She also has a benign fatty lipoma on her back that doesn't require treatment. Now that she's feeling better, her personality has had a chance to shine!At about 10 years old and 14 pounds, Bindi is the definition of a cuddle bug. She loves being close to her people and has a wonderful way of returning every bit of love she's given. She's also very food motivated, and if treats are involved, you'll see an extra spring in her step!Bindi does well with other dogs, especially calm pups who enjoy naps, leisurely strolls, and relaxing together. She has a gentle and easygoing personality and is happiest when she's somewhere cozy with the people she loves.Her ideal home will be with someone who has senior dog experience and is excited to give an older dog the comfortable, loving retirement she's earned. Meet Triscuit! This adorable 5-year-old boy weighs 22 pounds and came to us after his previous owners developed allergies to him. Luckily for Triscuit he is the kind of dog who bounces back quickly. He’s social, adaptable, and was ready to start making new friends immediately!Triscuit is a true people dog. He loves being included whether that means hanging out with his humans, exploring what everyone is up to, or simply being nearby while the family does their thing. He’s curious and playful and he has a personality that makes him very easy to fall in love with!And yes, just like you might expect from a dog named after a snack Triscuit is a BIG fan of food. He is very enthusiastic about treats and anything tasty which makes his special diet much easier because he certainly doesn’t let a little dietary restriction get in the way of enjoying mealtime! He does have a history of urinary stones which his previous owner had them removed several years ago, and thankfully he has been doing well since. He will need to remain on a special diet to help prevent future issues but otherwise he is happy, healthy, and ready for his next chapter.This sweet boy previously lived with children and did great with them. He is friendly with people of all ages and gets along great with other dogs too! He's the kind of dog who just fits in. Meet SALLY JO BROWN. She a sweet 11 year old senior gal who we rescued from West LA shelter. Her former owner lost their home and could no longer keep Sally Jo and her younger sister who was adopted. The volunteers put out a plea for her and now she's with DDR looking for a forever home. Her owner reported she was chill and relaxed with pretty much everything except cats. She lived with children and another dog. They also reported she was housebroken. Sally Jo weighs about 70lbs.
