A few years ago, this sweet girl was found dumped along the fence of our rescue! She was skin and bones and needed immediate help, so we named her MayDay. Our best guess is she around 6 or 7 years old and a Great Dane/ Staffshire terrier mix. She is very gentle, loves people, and really enjoys car rides. Mayday gets along with males, but is not very playful with other dogs. She would do best as the only fur baby in the home. Since she has been a kennel dog her whole life, MayDay is not pot trained so she will need a family who understands that. This dear girl would love a chance to live out her days in the comfort of a home with a family who will love her! My name is Apollo, and I am a 2-year-old Great Dane mix. I was relinquished to Lakeland 6 months ago, to no fault of my own. My friends here tell me I am a gentle soul with a larger-than-life personality and a body to match. They also tell me I am a good-natured, delightful pup and that I would make a wonderful addition to the right family. I walk nicely on a leash, and it’s a good thing because I’m curious about the world and love exploring nature. Leisurely walking the trails, smelling all the smells, is easily one of my favorite activities. I also really enjoy my time in the outdoor pen, where I can stretch my legs and show off my sprint. Luckily, I have pretty good brakes! After playtime, I enjoy leaning in to my shelter friends for a gentle embrace before heading back inside, where, with any luck, I’ll be left with a pig ear to munch on. I get along with other dogs and would do well in a home with a canine friend. Sometimes, I forget just how big I am, so a home without small kids would be best. If I had one wish for Christmas, it wouldn’t be a bone, bed, or cozy blanket. My wish would be for my forever person to come pick me up and take me home. Please, Santa, help make my Christmas wish come true. Oh, and Santa, I’ll be sure to leave you some kibble at the bottom of my bowl.

Ushi is at our shelter. Please submit an application from our website or just come in to meet her during open hours! Scroll through her pictures to see her cute video content! Don't be fooled by that pouty face- it is part of her charm! Ushi is as happy a dog as they come. Ushi arrived to us from Chicago Animal Care and Control as a young pup in March of 2025. This skinny young thing had come down with the "shelter ick," and sadly that turned into a case of pneumonia. We nursed Ushi to health and were so happy when she as adopted the next month. Unfortunately, Ushi's adopters made the difficult decision to re-home her recently. We were glad to welcome her back and in awe of how much she had grown! She is a beautiful young lady, with the exact same pout she had as a puppy. Ushi is beautifully built-- she is long and lean-- and because her adopters did a DNA test we know she is a Great Dane/pittie mix! While it is sad that Ushi has once again found herself in need of a home, the good news is that because she had a home for so many months we know a great deal about her. We know that she is great with all people, housebroken, and crate trained. She is not reactive on leash, knows several commands, and is very well behaved inside of the home. Sometimes, of course, she gets the zoomies, but her adopters described her as a great dog to work from home alongside. They write, "Ushi has so many best qualities. She is sweet, eager to please, learns very quickly, calms down quickly even after periods of intensity. Ushi rarely barks, even at activity out the window, is not prey driven, lets me snuggle her, and self-entertains during the work day. Ushi is doing great at recall exercises outside on a long leash, and is working on "place" exercises at home. Ushi does really well on "place" at the training facility we go to. Ushi doesn't rush or run out the door (we've trained on that). Ushi doesn't counter-surf (we have been careful not to give her the opportunity by not leaving stuff counter edges). Ushi doesn't steal socks, shoes or things that aren't hers, with the rare exception....I could go on." Ushi would be a great dog for an owner who enjoys training and working with their dog. She would also be a great dog for someone who already has a dog, as she has great dog-dog social skills! Ushi is a wonderful pup who is a ready-made companion for someone who wants a dog that is young but pretty laid back, polite, social, and intelligent. Which is...everyone?! We hope! Mr Loyal! That is what describes this boy in one word. Romo was once owned by someone in Aruba who then moved to the Netherlands. They gave him to some friends that let him roam the streets. We found him strolling along at a bus stop with a huge hematoma on his ear. He jumped right in the car and we took him to the vet. He had surgery and has now recovered from it. We were asked to take him with us to the US as the new owners didn't have the means to take care of him. Romo is an extremely loyal dog, calm and quiet and at the same time friendly with people and dogs. He's is extremely well mannered. Call us to hear about him and learn why we think he is the most loyal dog. His previous owner says he is 4 years old ( the vet says 5) and if you look on our Facebook page you will see all his posts about him. Oh and yes he loves riding in the car with you. He is house broken, does not like the cage to much, but that's ok. He doesn't get himself in trouble in the house. This is a great big dog! He mostly looks like a Great Daner, but could also have some Labrador in it. He is not a drooler like the Danes are. He likes other dogs but will also do well when being just with his special person. We would like to adopt him out within 40 miles of Elgin. His adoption fee is $350 to help us with the cost for his plane ride and the associated vet expenses.
