Story

Atreyu has been with us for a whole year now! He is an incredibly goofy, fun-loving husky boy that just needs to find the right adopter that understands him and is willing to work with him and establish a bond and trust. Atreyu has absolutely won over the heart of one of our trainers. He completed a board and train program quite a while ago and, because he is such a character, the trainer has been fostering him ever since! Atreyu was adopted for about 2 months during this time and unfortunately returned. He bonded with the husband / father of the household, who would take him on daily runs, but was not able to establish a trusting connection with the rest of the family and continued to try to see what he could get away with to a point where they just were not comfortable with him. As a result of this, we think a home with no kids would be best for Atreyu. His ideal home would have either one person who could be his best friend, or if there are multiple people, we recommend them being pretty dog savvy to know how to both work with him equally to form a relationship. He has learned a lot in his time with his trainer, and his perfect adopter will continue to exercise all of this with him! Some dogs truly thrive on structure and routine, and Atreyu is definitely one of those dogs. He needs to know where he fits in with you, and although he will very much so playfully see how close he can get to pushing you, it is very much so done affectionately in play once he gets to know you and trusts. In working with his trainer, Atreyu has learned heel, place and down. He has been brought into stores and public settings where he has been taught manners meeting new people, waiting patiently, and even does well off-leash. Even when he needs correction, Atreyu doesn’t go into defense mode or hold a grudge. His trainer can correct him and instantly pet his head, face, chest for praise and he is perfectly fine. He is not an “opportunist” that will take any chance to snap. Atreyu is honest and really wants to be good. Atreyu LOVES to cuddle. Just being held makes his day. He also loves to “supervise” on projects – he wants to be in the thick of it and be part of your family. He would be perfect for an active person with a sense of humor – his trainer has described him as the “class clown,” and says he is a total ham. Although Atreyu is not the most energetic, hyperactive husky in the world, he does have reasonable exercise needs as make sense for the breed – he would love a few walks or a run every day, or some solid socialization and playtime with other pups. He will get the zoomies and run around when he’s worked up and has to let it all out! He’s a very fun boy for a husky-loving home. Story

Jameson was saved from the e-list at MCACC where he was listed for fear. He ended up showing some uncertain behavior related to this fear in his foster home, and we decided a board and train program to try to figure him out would have the best chance of setting him up for success in the future. We were originally led to believe that Jameson was 5 years old, but after his vet visit and time with our trainer, we now believe he is closer to 3. His teeth are not great, but this is actually because he had distemper as a puppy and was one of the very lucky few to survive this deadly disease. Having bad teeth and some neurological side effects – like his tongue sticking out a little bit – are just remnants of the disease that will be with him through the rest of his life. Understanding his background with this disease has also helped us to understand his behaviors a great deal more, and hopefully will help us find just the right adopter for the rest of his life. After all he has been through, he deserves that much! Jameson has a lot of puppy-like tendencies, and a few oddities that will make him a unique and lovable companion for the right person. In true husky form, he is high-energy, active and enjoys playing with other dogs and toys, though he does have a shorter attention span. He does well with the other large dogs and he likes running up and down the fence with his neighbors’ smaller dog. In what is likely another neurological side effect, he does not do the best with stairs, though he still tries his best! He has improved greatly with leash pulling through his board and train, but will need continued reinforcement over time. As much as he loves walks and running around, he has not shown any desire to escape his fenced-in yard. Jameson had a resource-guarding bite incident prior to going to his board and train, and our trainer believe this was from him having little respect for boundaries and expecting he could always get his way. He has been very receptive to training and seems to always want to do the right thing if he knows what that is according to our trainer. There have not been any further incidents since his training and his fosters are continuing to work with him, stating that he has improved greatly. Jameson loves food and treats, so positive reinforcement works great for him. In what is another neurological side effect, he has depth perception issues that are most noticeable when giving him treats flat-handed from a palm. His trainer left us with some very helpful notes on him at the conclusion of his training: "Jameson is a super sweet and funny boy that tries to do things right. His future owner just needs to be patient because the neurological damage is definitely a bit of a handicap at times. I know Jameson knows the commands but I do give him time to put his body in the right, most comfortable position. So, he might not fall down the instant I ask him to lay down or sit but he is obeying and I can tell he tries. He gets distracted easily but all it takes it a little reminder, a second command, and he is back in business. Jameson has never tried to be a brat or very sassy. He took a little longer in the beginning to “warm up” but all the changes these dogs have to deal with is tough on them. I was proud of him today and how he listened on the trail." Though Jameson does have a shy side, he is also very sweet. When he finds his person, he becomes very attached. He has done well around the teenagers in his foster home, and he happily meets strangers. He’s a talkative dude who sings the husky song, especially around people and cars. Jameson would love to find an active family to call his own. A home with one or more other active dogs would be ideal as an outlet for his energy. Meet Buckeye! This big (70+ lb) husky mix was another pull from the euthanasia list at the Maricopa County shelter. Buckeye was placed on the e-list simply because he was scared in the shelter environment. He was frozen and shut down, refusing to walk on a leash and even eat hot dogs. Luckily, he was given a second chance by one of our amazing fosters. Like many fearful huskies, he has started to come out of his shell now that he’s in a safe, quiet home. When he was fresh out of the shelter, Buckeye was very shy and indifferent to the two other dogs in his foster home. But within a week or so, he started going up to the females in the home to seek out attention. He now plays well with the other dogs and even enjoys playing with toys! He does still get scared easily if he is touched on his neck, especially around males. However, he is making great progress and allowing himself to be pet more every day. So far, Buckeye has displayed medium energy. He will alternate between playing with the other dogs and staying to himself. He does not seem to rely on the other dogs for cues or pack habits. He has grumbled at other dogs if they approach one particular bowl he likes, but he does not bark, show teeth, or otherwise act aggressively. He responds well to verbal correction. We believe that Buckeye is still adjusting to life in a loving home and will continue to improve as he learns to trust. As he becomes more comfortable, his fosters plan to work on harnessing and walking on leash, as those are areas where he continues to be fearful. Although Buckeye was dealt a tough hand in life, he has so much love to give. He loves treats and belly rubs. His personality is starting to show, and he’s a smiley boy who enjoys attention from people he trusts. He has done well with the teenagers in his foster home and even does well in a crate. We do think he would be most suited for a calmer home, with mellow dogs or as an only dog. We also recommend caution around young children, not because of any aggression, but because he can still be jumpy around quick movements or people walking towards him. Like so many huskies we see, Buckeye was truly just not meant to live in a shelter. With some time and patience, we are confident he will learn to trust people and show his real self. Meet Khione! Khione was found as a stray with her puppy, Eros. They were picked up exiting the 51 by a good Samaritan who kept them in her yard for a while before transferring them into our care. They seemed to prefer being outside at their finder’s home, so we believe that they have lived outdoors for most of their lives. However, that didn’t stop Khione from calmly and easily settling into her new foster home. Khione’s fosters describe her as having low to medium energy. After a few small scuffles with one young dog early on, she gets along well with the other dogs in the home. She has not been particularly playful because she seems to be more concerned about guarding her puppy, who will try to join in when the other dogs are playing. However, once she is separated from her pup, she is able to let her guard down and relax. Despite her concern for her puppy, she is very intuitive and kind. She takes care of her older foster sibling, a 16-year-old cocker spaniel, and shows great motherly instincts towards the younger dogs. She has interacted well with large and small dogs in other private spaces and is even able to coexist peacefully with the cat in the home! Though she may not always be interested in other dogs, Khione absolutely loves people. She’s a big sweetheart who will immediately roll over for belly rubs when people approach her. She loves cuddling and anything that keeps her close to her humans. She is good with the kids in the home, as well. Her love for people does mean that she struggles with being in a crate and will experience separation anxiety, including howling and digging, when left completely alone. This is mitigated by having the other dogs around. Despite being an outdoor dog and not being potty-trained early on, Khione is already making good progress letting people know when she needs to go outside. Other than some typical counter-surfing and jumping on people, she has not shown any behavioral issues. She responds well to redirection and is very responsive to verbal correction, stopping the unwanted behavior as soon as you scold her. She will need some continued training to learn how to walk on a leash, but from what we’ve seen so far, we think she will learn quickly. All Khione needs now is a family to call her own. She would make a wonderful addition to any family that is ready to give her the love and attention she wants and deserves. Due to her separation anxiety, it is important that there is at least one other dog in the home to keep her company. Meet Zenith! Zenith was pulled from the euthanasia list at the Maricopa County shelter in November of 2023 with the help of a generous foster. According to shelter staff, he was e-listed for anxiety, shyness with humans, and a greater than normal potential for escape. Other than some moderate pulling on leash and a high interest in other dogs, he didn’t actually display any aggression or behavioral issues that we feel would make him unadoptable. He allowed handling and pets and had a wagging tail in the play yard. Once he was out of the shelter, he didn’t seem shy at all. He’s just a big friendly husky pup, and we’re so excited to give him a second chance! Although Zenith was a bit restless for the first few weeks in his foster home, he gradually became more comfortable and accepting of attention. He has made a ton of progress in learning to listen to his humans and play nicely with other dogs. He’s definitely your typical high-energy husky who loves to play with other big dogs. He can be a bit rough at times when he wants to be in charge, but he is doing well at learning boundaries. He has shown some resource guarding behavior around the other dogs in his home, but that is improving as he adjusts to life in a stable environment. He is almost completely house- and crate-trained and, other than some occasional counter-surfing, shows no behavioral issues around the house. He continues to make progress in responding to corrections when needed. With some consistent training, we know that Zenith has a ton of potential to be an amazing dog. He has done well with bigger dogs in both his foster’s home and other homes, though his behavior with smaller dogs and cats is unknown. He has also done well around older, dog-savvy kids; we aren’t sure how he would be around particularly young kids because of all his husky energy. He loves going for walks and actually does well on leash, though he will need some continued training to work on pulling, especially around cars. He also loves to play fetch and is very food-motivated. If huskies are your breed, Zenith is definitely your dog! He’s a sweet, playful, very talkative pup who would make a great companion for an active family, with or without other energetic dogs. Meet Lady! Lady came to us from the euthanasia list at the Maricopa County East shelter as an urgent medical case. The old East location has especially small kennels that aren’t suited to high-energy dogs. Although no one saw it happen, it is believed that she was jumping around her tiny space and managed to get her back right leg caught in the door. In her struggle to free herself, she managed to completely dislocate her hip, which was discovered later when she observed being unable to put any weight on that leg. Due to the time her hip spent dislocated, Lady underwent a femoral head ostectomy, or FHO surgery, after leaving the shelter to put her hip back into place and decrease the chance that it becomes dislocated again in the future. She was then transferred to one of our experienced medical fosters. She has been healing very well over the last several weeks and is now ready to start looking for her forever home. Lady adjusted easily to life in her foster home, settling in with the rest of the pack right away. She has shown medium to high energy as she continues to recover from surgery. She’s truly still a puppy at heart – while we believe she has had some human connection in the past, she doesn’t seem to have had much training. Though she can be a true stubborn husky at times, she is doing very well with consistency and responds well to appropriate corrections. She likes to get into the trash and has shown some prey curiosity towards the cat in the home, but she she responds to redirection with “no kitty”. We truly believe she will continue to improve with some more training. She has been left out of her crate when home alone and has not been destructive. Lady is very playful and does well with the other (large) dogs in the home. She doesn’t like to take charge, preferring the follow the other dogs’ leads. She has also spent some time at the park with other large dogs; it has been fairly limited thus far as she recovers, but it’s something her foster family is working up to. Though she still favors her injured leg slightly, it hasn’t stopped her from wanting to run and play. She also enjoys fetch and playing with stuffed toys, as well as going for walks and car rides. She walks nicely and is polite on leash when she leaves the house. To top it off, Lady absolutely loves people. She likes to be near her humans and will seek out belly rubs and snuggles. Once she trusts you, she’s sweet and loyal as can be. She would feel most at home in an active but relaxed household. We believe she will do well with children of any age. She could be an only dog but would likely prefer having another playful dog to spend time with. Lady is truly a sweet, easy husky who will thrive once she’s given the chance to be part of a family.
