Story
Are you looking for an adventure buddy to take camping, running or hiking? Then look no further, meet Polar! The dog you have been waiting for! Polar is a very sweet, affectionate boy who is big on snuggles and ear scratches. He is super smart and has been responding very well to training with our staff, as he is very eager to please. Polar loves to play with squeaky toys, splash around in our mini pool, play fetch with a tennis ball, and play in the yard with other dogs. But there is nothing he loves more than being around people. Polar has a lot of energy and just loves life. He would do amazing with an active owner who could take him out to explore and experience more of nature. If you think he might be your next best friend, call the shelter today to learn more about him! My adoption includes the following: -Spay/neuter surgery -All current vaccinations -Microchip -FREE wellness exam through VCA Animal Hospitals -$25 gift voucher from our friends at Choice Pet Market For more information about me or to schedule a meet and greet appointment, please complete an adoption questionnaire.

Story
Meet the strikingly gorgeous Christina Waguilera, a 30-pound, one-year-old Husky who came to us as a stray. This affectionate and lively pup loves playing with squeaky toys and having energetic zoomies around the place! She has mastered basic commands like "sit," and is very treat-motivated and eager to please. She is house trained and knows how to use a dog door. While Christina enjoys interacting with other dogs, she prefers to have her food in peace, so she would thrive as the only canine companion in a home. She would love to have playdates with furry pals. Christina is residing with one of our amazing foster homes and will be at the adoption center on Saturdays from 10-4pm, or you may email Debbie@AzFriends.org to schedule a weekday meeting. No appointments are necessary and you can come and see us any time we are open. Please go to our website (www.azfriends.org) to fill out a consultation form then come and see us! We do require any family interested in meeting our dogs or cats to fill out a consultation form – this form helps us determine if the dog/cat and the home are a good match, since it is so easy to fall in love with a photo, without knowing the personality of the dog. Once you have filled out the online Adoption Consultation Form, just come in and see us (or come and see us and fill out the consultation form upon arrival)! Please note that ALL dogs and cats are available to the first home that meets the dog or cat that we feel is a good match. In order to help make the best match, we do want all family members (dogs and humans) to meet any potential new family member. Our adoption center hours are: Closed Sunday/Monday; Tuesday 10a-2p, Wednesday 3p-7p, Thursday 3p-7p, Friday 10a-2p, Saturday 10a-4p. We are located at 952 W Melody Avenue in Gilbert (zip code 85233).All animals are altered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, licensed (dogs). Cats tested for FELV/FIV. Dogs tested for Heartworm. All animals are available to the first family that is a good match, and if we have more than one animal who is a good match, there will be a lottery for all matches. Note that families must have come in to our adoption center and spoken with an adoption counselor prior to any lottery (when we have lotteries, they usually occur on Saturday mornings).

Story
Meet Nala! She’s had quite a bumpy journey the first two years of her life, and she’s hoping to find her perfect forever home now. Nala came to us with her mom and two siblings as an 8-week old puppy in 2021 from Clovis, NM. Nala was adopted shortly after joining us and remained with that family for 1.5+yrs. She grew up with other dogs and kids, but somehow still was not socialized well and became extremely fearful when she left the house. She still has quite a bit of lingering anxiety even now. Her family continued to add small pets and Nala, being the largest dog and not well-adjusted, suffered. We had tried to work with them multiple times over the 1.5yrs when we abruptly received a message one night that they would  put Nala down if we did not take her back immediately, giving us less than 24hrs to do so. One of our longtime fosters stepped up and took her back in right away, though she proved to be more of a challenge than we anticipated. This foster family made it work for a while with their other dogs in the home, but ultimately after a lot of time and effort we have determined that Nala truly does need to be the only pet in the home. The biggest behavioral issue that Nala has likely stems from her very understandable fear of abandonment. She honestly just loves her human too much - and when she falls for someone, she falls hard. She doesn’t share attention with other dogs well, and she struggles to trust new people. She doesn't have any major behavioral issues in the home though - she kennels well if you want to kennel her, but she doesn't really need it. She won't destroy your stuff. She really just wants to please! She's a wonderful human companion for the right person - she's looking for someone who doesn't have people over a ton. She's ok with someone who works, but she'd really prefer if the hours aren't too terribly long. She is the most devoted dog you will find who just loves to hike and play fetch with tennis balls. Be ready to share your pillow! She is definitely a cuddle bug. Nala was adopted again very briefly and lived in a home with no other dogs, but with cats - she did ok for the most part, but the adopter did feel wary about her behavior around the cats several times and said she thinks it's best if she is a completely only pet at this point. She was returned due to life changes, moving out of state to reconcile a marriage, on the adopter's part and not due to any failure of Nala in the home - her adopter loved her very much and struggled with this decision but knew she would not integrate well with other dogs in a new state. Nala is unfortunately back in boarding now and she would really even just love a foster home in the meantime while she waits for her forever home. She needs a unicorn home, so obviously this makes her a difficult sell! Please apply if you think you may be the right fit for this sweet girl - we know her human is out there. https://azhuskyrescue.com/adoption-application/

Story
Meet Buckeye! This big (70+ lb) husky mix was another pull from the euthanasia list at the Maricopa County shelter. Buckeye was placed on the e-list simply because he was scared in the shelter environment. He was frozen and shut down, refusing to walk on a leash and even eat hot dogs. Luckily, he was given a second chance by one of our amazing fosters. Like many fearful huskies, he has started to come out of his shell now that he’s in a safe, quiet home. When he was fresh out of the shelter, Buckeye was very shy and indifferent to the two other dogs in his foster home. But within a week or so, he started going up to the females in the home to seek out attention. He now plays well with the other dogs and even enjoys playing with toys! He does still get scared easily if he is touched on his neck, especially around males. However, he is making great progress and allowing himself to be pet more every day. So far, Buckeye has displayed medium energy. He will alternate between playing with the other dogs and staying to himself. He does not seem to rely on the other dogs for cues or pack habits. He has grumbled at other dogs if they approach one particular bowl he likes, but he does not bark, show teeth, or otherwise act aggressively. He responds well to verbal correction. We believe that Buckeye is still adjusting to life in a loving home and will continue to improve as he learns to trust. As he becomes more comfortable, his fosters plan to work on harnessing and walking on leash, as those are areas where he continues to be fearful. Although Buckeye was dealt a tough hand in life, he has so much love to give. He loves treats and belly rubs. His personality is starting to show, and he’s a smiley boy who enjoys attention from people he trusts. He has done well with the teenagers in his foster home and even does well in a crate. We do think he would be most suited for a calmer home, with mellow dogs or as an only dog. We also recommend caution around young children, not because of any aggression, but because he can still be jumpy around quick movements or people walking towards him. Like so many huskies we see, Buckeye was truly just not meant to live in a shelter. With some time and patience, we are confident he will learn to trust people and show his real self. If you’re ready to open your home and your heart to this big sweetheart, fill out an application today. https://azhuskyrescue.com/adoption-application/

Story
Diamond is 9 months old, we have had her since she was only 8 weeks old. She loves playing with kids and dogs. Loves being cuddled and having her belly scratched. She is a fast runner and like to play fetch. She is up to date on all vaccines. We had a fire in our home and are temporarily in a smaller house with no yard. She needs a home where she can be free and play outside. We are open to a temporary home for her, we just don’t know when our home will be ready. We have an appointment to have her spayed which we can keep if new owner desires.
