Story
Tibby is a loyal and brave 7-year-old mix of Jack Russell Terrier mix, weighing 18 pounds. This unique girl has a personality all her own—much like a cat! Tibby likes to be touched on her terms, using her expressive eyes to let you know when she’s not in the mood. Independent by nature, she needs time to build trust, but once you’ve earned it, she’ll be your best friend and will always be by your side. We don’t know what happened in Tibby’s past to make her so cautious, but we do know that with patience, she’ll become your closest companion. Tibby loves to curl up next to you on the couch when she’s ready for affection. and is very well behaved in her foster home She’s a pro at entertaining herself with toys and enjoys a game of fetch, but she’s also perfectly content being a couch potato. Tibby is always up for an adventure, especially if it involves a car ride, and she’s great on a leash. She should be your one and only, as she’s not a fan of sharing her space with other animals. Tibby is spayed, up-to-date on her vaccinations, microchipped, and fully vetted. If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind companion who values her space but will reward your patience with a lifetime of loyalty, Tibby is the perfect match! Story
Meet Vanilla   Name: Vanilla Age: 6 years Sex: Spayed Female Breed: Terrier mix Color: Beige/White Weight: 5kg Height (shoulder): 23cm   Her Rescue Story   Vanilla was found in a temple parking lot in late August 2025 and brought to a city shelter. Despite being gentle and calm, she was placed on the euthanasia list — but was thankfully rescued just in time. Now she’s safe, cherished, and waiting for a loving family.   ‍‍ Social with People   Vanilla is quiet, calm, careful, and incredibly gentle. When called, she approaches slowly, lies down, and shows her belly. She allows handling, being picked up, and enjoys quiet affection. She’s still a bit unsure around men, but has no avoidance or fear reactions. She is expected to do well with children under 13 due to her soft temperament.   Social with Dogs   Vanilla minds her own business and rarely engages other dogs. She tends to be intimidated by larger dogs and will politely move away. Even when getting attention from humans, she may relocate if other dogs crowd around. She currently doesn’t initiate play, but may become more confident once settled in a home.   With Cats   Likely to be fearful — cat testing can be arranged if needed   Energy Level   Low — she enjoys resting, relaxing, and peaceful indoor life. Perfect for a calm, cozy household.   Walks   She walks well and follows her handler, frequently checking in for reassurance. She enjoys quiet areas but may stop or hesitate in busy streets with heavy traffic. With patience and encouragement, she’ll continue to build confidence outside.   Other Notes   No resource guarding — toward people or dogs No separation anxiety No barking Calm & comfortable in a kennel/crate Currently potty trained outdoors   Ideal Home   A relaxed, quiet home with gentle humans who will offer patience, comfort, and security. She’s the perfect companion for someone seeking a peaceful, loving, low-energy dog.   If Vanilla sounds like the perfect match for your family, we’d love to hear from you! Story
Under AKR Custody Review (Adoption temporarily on hold pending resolution of foster situation) Currently in Vancouver!!! Name: Mongmong Age: 4 years old Sex: Neutered Male Breed: JRT (Jack Russell Terrier) Mix Color: Black, tan, and white Weight: 9.5 kg (20.9 lbs) Height (at shoulder): 32 cm (12.6 inches)   Mongmong is a sweet and affectionate pup who loves people — whether you’re a familiar friend or someone he’s just met, he’ll happily come over for pets and attention. He’s especially gentle with young children and is comfortable being picked up with arms under his belly. Once he warms up, he’ll even show you his belly! He’s curious about other dogs and will approach them to say hello, though he doesn’t typically engage in play. Gentle with cats, not much interest in them. Mongmong has a moderate energy level and enjoys outdoor activities like walks, but settles down calmly afterward. He’s well-behaved on leash, doesn’t pull, and follows his human companion nicely. He is not food aggressive and remains calm in a kennel or during car rides. Mongmong was found injured, likely from a car accident, and was at risk of euthanasia at a municipal shelter. After being rescued, Mongmong had one eye removed due to phthisis bulbi, a condition that caused his eye to shrink and lose function and had hernia surgery on 25.05.01-but he’s recovered beautifully and is now ready for a fresh start Mongmong is a brave little survivor with a heart full of love. He’s looking for a forever home where he can feel safe, cherished, and loved — could that be with you? Story
Meet Bao — Sweet, Loyal, and Ready for Her Forever Family!   Name: Bao Age: 3 years Sex: Spayed Female Spayed: Yes Breed: Terrier Mix Color: Black/Brown/White Weight: 7.5kg Height (shoulder): 41cm   Rescue Story   Bao entered a city shelter in 2023 with her mother. She was rescued at around 4 months old and spent about 2 years in a foster home looking for an adopter in Korea, but without success. She joined AKR in mid-October to prepare for her chance at a forever home overseas.   ‍‍ Socialization with People   Bao lived with a single foster guardian for nearly 2 years, so she naturally forms a deep bond with one person. Once she trusts you, she becomes incredibly loyal and affectionate — a true one-person “velcro dog.”   At first meetings, she may be shy, but she warms up quickly with treats and gentle interaction. She has done well with children under 13 and can be picked up comfortably by placing arms under her belly. Once she’s comfortable, she happily shows her belly for rubs.   Socialization with Dogs   Bao is sociable and gets along well with other dogs.   Just like she bonds strongly to a favorite person, she may also become very attached to a particular dog friend. If that dog doesn’t want to play with her, she may whine a little to get their attention — it’s part of her sweet, clingy charm.   She plays well with both large and small dogs. If another dog barks or tries to provoke her, she does not react or fight back — instead, she runs to her guardian for safety. She generally prefers people over dogs.   Cats   She has shown interest and playful whining when seeing cats outdoors. A home-cat test is available upon request.   Energy Level   Moderate — she enjoys outdoor activities, running, and playtime, but settles calmly afterward. In her foster home, she enjoyed 1–2 hours of walking and play each day.   ‍ Walks   Bao has plenty of walking experience. She does not pull, follows her handler well, and loves going for walks and exploring new places.   Other Behaviors • No food guarding toward people or dogs • Not severe separation anxiety, but she may whine if her person suddenly leaves the room • Strong people attachment — wants to be near her person • May bark when hearing outside noises • Gets car-sick and may need to be monitored during rides • Prefers outdoor potty   If Bao sounds like the loving companion you’ve been looking for, please submit an application today Adoptmekr.org Currently in South Korea (available for international adoption!) Story
Meet Frieda — 19 pounds of opinionated charm wrapped in a cozy little Jack Russell mix body. This middle-aged lady arrived as a stray, but it’s clear from day one that she’s been well-fed, well-loved, and maybe just a tiny bit spoiled — and honestly, she wears it well. Frieda is looking for a calm, predictable home where she can be your quiet companion. She loves nothing more than curling up beside you, dozing the day away, and soaking in all the affection she can get. Like many Jack Russells, she prefers things on her own terms sometimes, but she gives plenty back when she’s comfortable. We’re recommending an adult-only household or a home with older, respectful children who understand that Frieda isn’t interested in hustle and bustle. What she is interested in? Treats, soft beds, sunny spots, and a peaceful place to spend her golden years. If you’re seeking a laid-back little buddy with a big personality, Frieda is ready to retire in style — right by your side. *Reminder* We are currently facilitating adoptions through appointment only. If you arrive at the shelter without an appointment to meet a dog, we may not be able to assist you. Please call the shelter (516-869-6311) during working hours (Mon. to Fri. 9AM-4PM; Sat. 10AM-4PM) for more information about this dog, the adoption process at the shelter, and to confirm availability. Please go to www.theshelterconnection.org for more information about and directions to the shelter.

Story
Steve -  1 year, 25lbs, BeagleTerrier Mix, Neutered - low rider :)  This dog is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org Their Foster Parent Says: "Steve loves people and dogs and chasing after squirrels and birds. Every time we pass a person or a dog, he is always wagging his tail and pulling his leash to greet them. As soon as someone gives him affection, he literally slides down and rolls over on his back for belly rubs. He is such a trusting and sweet dog. In the morning, he waits patiently for me in the bathroom while I get ready and will sit or lay down on my bath mat (since I have towels everywhere on the floor to protect my white carpets, he thinks any towel is for him) then we go for a 45 minute walk, come home and he eats his breakfast, depending on how tired he is from his walk, he will typically play on his own for an hour before taking a 4 hour nap. We then go for a potty break, play a little more and then another 45 minute walk in the evening followed by dinner, more play time and a final night potty. He is definitely teething right now and is a little mouthy which is understandable for a pup his age. He loves playing fetch, gnawing on his toys and is very food motivated. As a typical lab, he scarfs down his food in 5 minutes even with a slow feeder. He needs leash training as he pulls very hard during our walks when he sees a bird, squirrel or dog which is often as you can imagine in NYC. He is a little afraid of bikes, buses and leaf blowers and will pull the leash to move away from them and gets down low. However he is pretty tolerable of the city life and will adjust quickly. He’s very comfortable in elevators, with stairs and riding the subway which is impressive coming from South Carolina. The best part about this pup, is he practically came potty trained and crate trained and has had no accidents thus far! The best pup of the 7 I’ve fostered thus far." Level of dog ownership experience needed:BEGINNER: This means we predict this dog will be low on the challenge scale due to its breed/age combo. Potentially a good fit for someone who has relevant dog care experience (fostering, dog sitting) and is looking to adopt their first pup.  Energy level MEDIUM: Needs a daily 60-90 minute walk or window of quick paced exercise (minimum) in addition to potty break strolls (10-30 min each). Also needs significant socializing opportunities outside the home and mental stimulation at home like tricks training practice, chew items, and puzzle toys. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.)  City pupSeems unfazed by the sights and sounds, may as well have been born here.POTTY TRAININGYes – Few or no accidentsCOMFORT LEVEL WITH STRANGERSSocial butterfly – Wants to be friends with everyone who walks by, loves anyone who will stop to say hello. BEHAVIOR WITH CHILDREN (always requires adult supervision)Maybe for age 12 and up – Is either big and energetic (okay with kids big enough not to get knocked down) or a little skittish (could be comfortable with older children that can be extra gentle) SOCIAL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER DOGSYes – Good with most other dogs (sizes, breeds, etc.) as far as we know and enjoys socializing with other caninesRESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER ANIMALS (cats, small pets, etc.Not sure – Wants to chase squirrels and birds so may not be a good match for a home with cats, rabbits, etc. MOUTHY BEHAVIORNeeds training – Is either still in the puppy stage or was never trained. Tries to put their mouth on your hands when playing or needs attention, grabs leash, chews on your personal belongings SEPARATION ANXIETY (Adjusting – Might cry for a few minutes when you first leave the house but settles pretty quickly and has no problem being left alone otherwise. LEASH MANNERSWTF is a leash – Pulls hard. Zig zags like crazy. Has no idea how to walk on a leash or doesn’t have outside privileges yet (too young)CUDDLE BUG LEVELMedium – Likes to snuggle when he's in the mood but often stays in his own bed JUMPING ON PEOPLE TO SAY HELLONeeds training – Very excited to greet everyone and has no idea how to do so politely. Jumps up on most strangers or other dogs that go by. In puppy phase or wasn’t trained as a young adult. CRATE TRAININGYep/mostly – Seems comfortable in the crate, may whine a little at first but settles pretty quickly. We use the crate when we leave the pup alone and/or at night.  Medical statusHealthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm tested if coming from the South or Puerto Rico ; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake How this dog ended up with Social Tees:Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee, Los Angeles and Puerto Rico. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.  PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though!  This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes.
