Story
Tibby is a loyal and brave 7-year-old mix of Jack Russell Terrier mix, weighing 18 pounds. This unique girl has a personality all her own—much like a cat! Tibby likes to be touched on her terms, using her expressive eyes to let you know when she’s not in the mood. Independent by nature, she needs time to build trust, but once you’ve earned it, she’ll be your best friend and will always be by your side. We don’t know what happened in Tibby’s past to make her so cautious, but we do know that with patience, she’ll become your closest companion. Tibby loves to curl up next to you on the couch when she’s ready for affection. and is very well behaved in her foster home She’s a pro at entertaining herself with toys and enjoys a game of fetch, but she’s also perfectly content being a couch potato. Tibby is always up for an adventure, especially if it involves a car ride, and she’s great on a leash. She should be your one and only, as she’s not a fan of sharing her space with other animals. Tibby is spayed, up-to-date on her vaccinations, microchipped, and fully vetted. If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind companion who values her space but will reward your patience with a lifetime of loyalty, Tibby is the perfect match! Story
Cal - 6 months old, 10lbs, Terrier Mix, Neutered Estimated full grown size: About 13lbs Their Foster Parent Says: "Meet Cal. Cal is doing great! He’s super smart, calm, and adapting quickly to his new temporary home. He loves being near me or my husband, and when we leave the room, he’ll bark a bit for our attention. He just wants to be where people are. He thrives on routine: he eats three times a day, gets a treat after every meal, and we take him on several walks a day as we work on weaning him off wee-wee pads and helping him become fully potty-trained. Cal enjoys playing with toys, although he’s still figuring out how to interact with humans during the play – he’ll usually play a little, then curl up for a nap. He has a favorite chew that keeps him busy, but as he’s a puppy he needs supervision – he once tried to chew my laptop charger. He’s also made great progress socially. At first, he didn’t like being picked up or leashed and would playfully run laps around the kitchen island to avoid us. Now, he lets me pick him up easily. In the evenings, he cuddles with me while we watch TV – and we’ve noticed he sometimes watches the screen, which makes us think he had a TV on in his previous home. Cal is a rare little guy – so clam and sweet-natured for a puppy. He’s already showing signs of being a wonderful companion, and I truly believe that anyone lucky enough to adopt him will see him continue to thrive and reveal just how intelligent and loving he really is." Level of dog ownership experience needed:INTERMEDIATE: As an adult, this dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day. The adopter must have relevant primary care experience with a similar breed, temperament, and/or energy level. (Primary care experience includes ownership, fostering, or dog sitting as an adult, not a dog you grew up with.) Relevant puppy care experience is a huge plus, but bare minimum the adopter must have TONS of time and patience. Raising a puppy can be a lot of fun, but it’s also  tremendous work. Puppies’ personalities and exercise/stimulation requirements change dramatically between now and when they’re a year old as their bodies and brains develop, so an active lifestyle and the ability to adapt to a pup’s evolving needs are a must. We strongly urge professional dog training with a rewards based trainer from the get go. Adults only or kids ages 8 and up – all puppies go through a mouthy, rambunctious phase and often accidentally hurt children when playing. PLEASE DO YOUR OWN BREED RESEARCH to make sure you have a better understanding of the kind of temperament and exercise requirements this dog may have as an adult. Energy levelMEDIUM: Very young puppies sleep and nap a lot, but their energy level skyrockets when they become teens (4 months to around a year). As an adult, this dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day at a minimum. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.)  Potty trained?Working on this skill. Puppies under 12 weeks old are often on track with their wee pad skills, but they’re too young to walk outside in public NYC areas yet because they haven’t finished their puppy vaccine series. Puppies older than 12 weeks are usually learning to do their business outside. Potty training takes a lot of patience, consistency, and clean up.  Crate trained?Nope. None of our new puppies have been formally trained, but many of our foster parents/adopters choose to crate train. It can be a great way to keep puppies safe and teach them independence. Social with dogs?Yes. Some puppies are shy, others are bold, but all have the potential to be taught healthy socializing skills. It’s a huge part of raising a puppy and must be done carefully. How they interact with other dogs depends largely on how their humans help them learn to.  Social with children?  (ALWAYS requires adult supervision)Yes… but most puppies are not a great match for a home with kids under age 8 because they go through intense mouthy play and rambunctious phases and often accidentally hurt young kids while playing. Children must always be monitored and taught to interact with dogs of any age respectfully.   Social with cats?Yes. Almost all puppies have the potential to be friends with a cat. It’s on the adopter to know their cat’s temperament and preferences and to teach their puppy respectful manners.  Mouthy play: High! All puppies go through phases where they chew your stuff and grab your hands, arms, feet… puppies naturally explore the world, play, and test boundaries with their mouths. (It also happens when they’re teething.) Their teeth are super sharp though, so it can be a very painful phase for humans and other animals in the home. Proper training, outlets, and socialization are key. Leash manners:None. :) Will need to learn this skill.   Separation anxiety:MEDIUM: Most puppies have some level of separation anxiety as they learn to self soothe. Often they cry the first 10+ minutes when they are left home alone or in a crate. Consistent training and alone time is crucial. Medical status:Healthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP and Bordetella vaccines (for dogs under 4 months old, adopters will need to finish the DHPP vaccine series and administer the Rabies vaccine at 16 weeks of age), spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer uponHow this dog ended up with Social Tees:Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee or St. Thomas. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.  PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though!  This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes. Story
Davinci - Terrier/Poodle Mix, 4 months, 6lbs, Neutered Estimated to Be About 20lbs Full Grown - We rescued his mom too who is about 15lbs.  Thier Foster Parent Says: "Davinci is a playful, curious pup with a big personality and just the right amount of energy. He’s not bouncing off the walls, but he definitely thrives with daily walks, playtime, and a bit of adventure. He loves to explore, engage his brain, and show off his impressive toy-sorting skills. With his confident spirit and bursts of zoomie joy, Davinci will keep you laughing and moving. He’s an active, happy dog who’s ready for a home that will keep up with his smarts and his love for fun. He is smart, figuring out quickly that sitting politely is the best way to get attention. He grasps new concepts quickly and responds calmly to most new things, usually pausing to observe." This puppy is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.)  Cuddle Bug Level High — Wants to be in your lap pretty much all the time Davinci is extremely cuddly and likes to be near his favorite person. He is happiest when he is being held, cuddled or kissed. He will follow you from room to room. Potty TrainedYes — Few or no accidents Davinci is transitioning from potty pads. He is fully pad trained so he doesn't have accidents. We no longer use the pads and with a strict schedule and crating at night, he is going outside only like a big boy! He is still a puppy and needs to go out often Comfy with strangers? More of a wall flower— Fine with meeting new people but not particularly interested, kind of shy in busy social situations like a gathering or a packed day in the park. Davinci is selectively social. He’s fine meeting new people, but prefers calm introductions over crowded scenes. In quieter settings, he’s confident and curious, especially if you’re the one holding the treat bag. He’s happy to be held by strangers when handed over, but can be a little shy if someone unfamiliar reaches for him on the ground. He definitely likes people, he just appreciates a slower, gentler approach and a little time to warm up. Once he feels safe, his sweet, loyal side shines through. Comfortable with Children? (ALWAYS requires supervision) Yes for 12 and up — may be a little energetic or a little skittish, best with older children that can be extra gentle or that are big enough not to get accidentally knocked down He is a zesty puppy, he has sharp baby teeth and curious puppy energy. He would be great with gentle older children Social with Other Dogs? Yes — Good with all other dogs (sizes, breeds, etc.) as far as we know and enjoys socializing with other canines Respectful of Other Animals? (cats, small pets, etc.) Yes — Seems to get along with other animals, either tries to play with them or is mostly uninterested  Mouthy Behavior? Medium – Is respectful of hands, feet, etc. but does like to chew on things it’s not supposed to like shoes, furniture, etc. Davinci is interested in my shoes and is always on the lookout for something nice to chew (like a cabinet corner) so he is always supervised. He is a totally average and normal puppy and he is easily redirected to more appropriate outlets like toys.Leash Manners? Getting the Hang of it – Davinci is fantastic, he does have a tendency to stop or lose momentum when there are scary sounds happening. He freezes when loud trucks pass or something new happens. He recovers quickly and is building confidence. It's his first week in NYC and this is expected! Okay in the city? Yes — Seems unfazed by the sights and sounds, they may as well have been born here. He is handling the sights and sounds of NYC super well and is gaining confidence each day. He isn't particularly frightened of anything and walks like a pro.  Separation Anxiety? Davinci is a people-oriented pup who thrives on routine and togetherness. He’s working hard on building independence and learning that it’s okay to be alone. Right now, he can stay crated when left and crated overnight, though he cries for a while before settling down. With a consistent schedule, he’s already made solid progress over a week, and his anxiety has started to ease. He’ll need continued support and someone patient and committed to helping him practice being on his own. His instinct to stick close is strong, but with the right guidance, he’ll keep gaining confidence in solo time.  Crate training? Working on it – We set one up and leave the door open but rarely close it because the dog freaks out when we do. Davinci is mostly crate trained and doing well with it. He eats treats in his crate, sleeps there at night, and stays crated when left alone. While he’d rather be out and about with his people, he’s not afraid of the crate and is learning it’s a safe, calm place to relax. He may whine a little at first, but he settles quickly and keeps his crate clean with no accidents. We're also using crate time to help him decompress, avoid overstimulation, and build confidence being on his own. He’s getting the hang of it and improving every day.We are practicing taking naps in the crate to work on his separation anxiety and ensure he gets enough rest (avoiding overstimulation). He prefers not to be crated, but isn't afraid of his crate and is learning it's a place to relax.  Medical status:Healthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP and Bordetella vaccines (for dogs under 4 months old, adopters will need to finish the DHPP vaccine series and administer the Rabies vaccine at 16 weeks of age), spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon How this dog ended up with Social Tees:Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee or St. Thomas. Story
Lulu -  1 year, 11lbs, Terrier Mix, Spayed  Want to adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org. Our Team Says: "Lulu would do better in calm area of the city or the burbs. She isn't a huge fan of the busy city." Thier Foster Parent Says: "Lulu is a total lovebug and deeply attached to her people. She is happiest curled up against your leg or watching you from across the room, tail wagging the moment you look her way. She has a gentle, easygoing nature and stays relaxed and tolerant whenever you need to handle her. While she’s calm and cuddly most of the time, she has a goofy side and will happily entertain herself with a toy or play fetch. It’s clear she had some basic training in a past life; she’s potty trained, knows simple commands, and is comfortable with her leash. If you’re looking for a pup who’s affectionate, well-mannered, and just the right amount of silly, she’s your girl! The biggest area of opportunity for Lulu is gaining confidence in the city. She’s made amazing progress settling into her foster home and yard, but outdoor walks are still very scary for her. That said, she handles her fears quietly—no barking or reactivity, just some nervous darting and shaking. She’d thrive in a quiet area or the suburbs, where she can keep building trust on walks at her own pace. She’s a truly special pup. Whoever brings her home is in for something wonderful!" Level of dog ownership experience needed:BEGINNER: This means we predict this dog will be low on the challenge scale due to its breed/age combo. Potentially a good fit for someone who has relevant dog care experience (fostering, dog sitting) and is looking to adopt their first pup.  Energy levelMEDIUM: Needs a daily 60-90 minute walk or window of quick paced exercise (minimum) in addition to potty break strolls (10-30 min each). Also needs significant socializing opportunities outside the home and mental stimulation at home like tricks training practice, chew items, and puzzle toys. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.)  Cuddle Bug LevelLulu is not a lap dog, but likes to spend majority of the time laying right near you or touching your leg. She definitely will chill out and do her own thing (chew her toy, lay on the floor).  Potty TrainedYes — Few or no accidents  Comfy with strangers?Need to go slow  —Still coming out of her shell! She's been able to warm up to the few people we've introduced to her at home. Outside of the house she is still very afraid and hides or shrinks from any people walking by.  Comfortable with Children? (ALWAYS requires supervision)Yes for 12 and up — may be a little energetic or a little skittish, best with older children that can be extra gentle or that are big enough not to get accidentally knocked down  Social with Other Dogs?Mostly — Generally good with other dogs but may be picky (scared of big dogs or plays too rough for small dogs, for example)  Mouthy Behavior?Low –She loves her chew toys, but has a very clear sense of what is appropriate to chew on and sticks to that!  Leash Manners?Right now, she is very terrified of walks, which has made her pull and zig zag quite a bit. However, we've had moments where she's comfortable for a block or in our backyard and around the house she behaves really well on a leash, which makes me think she has some leash training and would not need much direction once she's comfortable.  Okay in the city? Will do best in a calm area or the burbs — Terrified of walks, barely wants to move and shakes a lot, eager to get back to home (may be a puppy or a brand new rescue) 'm not sure yet. Short answer: She is still very terrified of walks and she can rush to get back. She shows interest in walks when we're in the house will definitely do better in a suburb or really quiet area. We've made some real progress over the last week, but she is still mostly shut down.  Medical statusHealthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm negative; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake How this dog ended up with Social Tees:Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee, Puerto Rico or Southern California. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them.
