Story
Meet Chico, the black lab! Chico came to the Shelter after his previous guardians were unable to meet his day-to-day needs. Chico is a ball of energy who is looking to be someone’s running/hiking/adventure buddy. He is so eager to get up and go that sometimes he carries his leash when presented to go out for a walk. Chico has only been at the Shelter for a short while but has been quite the social butterfly. He has lived with children under 12 in his previous home. He was primarily outdoors in his last home so adopters should be patient as he transitions – especially in regards to potty training and other “indoor manners”. Chico thinks caged animals (like birds) are a bit too exciting so a home with prey-species is not recommended. A home with a canine may be appropriate after a meet ‘n greet at the Shelter! In Chico`s previous home, he was noted to be a bit vocal. Adopters who live in multi-unit housing (apartments, condo, townhouse) or have neighbors sensitive to noise may want to be mindful in adoption as everyone may not appreciate Chico`s voice.Chico is available for preadoption at this time – come in, fall in love and you can take him home after his neuter! Now through February 15th, all adoption fees are reduced to $33 - come to the Shelter today to adopt your very own Valentine! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Meet Elmo, the mixed breed! Elmo has some big feelings about the world and is looking for an adopter that will set him up for success. Elmo bonds strongly with his people and becomes the ultimate cuddle bug. Elmo appreciates socializing with people and his canine friends on occasion but finds solace in returning home to a quiet, low key house. Interacting with young children is not at the top of Elmo’s to do list, but teens are typically okay. He bonds strongly to his person and is very responsive to positive reinforcement training. Elmo will need a period of decompression in his adoptive home where he can simply get to know his new person and the routine without big outings or events with new people, animals or environments. Gradual confidence building and bonding will be important before Elmo starts going out on the town to busy, fast paced environments. Elmo has enjoyed play time at the Shelter with other dogs but does prefer not to share his people or items with his canine friends. Friends in the world to meet up for playdates – totally ok. Friends in his house around his stuff – not so much. In his most recent home, Elmo was described to be house trained and non-destructive. He really enjoys a couch and is ready to cozy up with his new person after a walk. Elmo`s adoption fee has been sponsored by a generous Good Samaritan! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. Story
This is my Indy girl. I rescued her when she was about six months old, and she’s been my best friend for the past four years. She’s a total sweetheart who gets along great with other dogs and kids. She hasn’t had much exposure to cats, but has done fine when she has. She’s around four years old; her exact birthday is unknown. The vet believes she is mostly Labrador Retriever, though not purebred. She has all the classic Lab traits—she loves to run, be outside, and stay active. Due to changes in my living situation, I can no longer give Indy the life she deserves. I’m hoping to find her a home with a big yard where she can burn off her energy. She completed a two-week board-and-train program and is well trained, though consistency is important. She responds very well to an e-collar using the vibration setting only, which she was properly trained on. Indy is a loving, loyal dog, and I’m looking for the best possible home for her.

Story
Looks like: Labrador Retriever mix Female, 8 years old (estimated), 69 pounds Magnificent Mihla is a sweetheart with lots of love to give! She has these mesmerizing eyes full of wonder and adorable floppy ears that really make her stand out. Miss Mihla enjoys spending her time going for car rides or long walks, playing surgeon with squeaky toys, alerting her fosters about squirrels and birds that dare to cross her path, and attending training regularly to work on building up her leash manners. This lovely lady would be ideal for a home where she can be the star and not have to share your attention but she may also fit right in with a household that has a mellow dog who doesn't mind sharing the spotlight. Due to how excited we have seen her get around prey animals we suspect she may not be ideal for a household with cats. We have not seen how she is with children. The SPCA of Monterey County reached out to us for help because Mihla was becoming increasingly stressed in the shelter environment. She was a favorite among many volunteers who worked with her there, so how could we resist?

Story
Looks like: Pointer mix Male, 12 years old (estimated), 50 pounds If you're looking for calm companionship and steady love, Barley is your guy. This handsome Pointer mix has the kindest eyes! The distinguished touch of grey on his face tells the story of a life well lived and a heart that still has plenty of love to give. Barley is a gentle, easy-going soul who gets along beautifully with other dogs and enjoys leisurely sniffaris, yummy treats, and the company of good friends. If you have a cozy sofa, he will gladly be your couch buddy and snuggle with you! One of Barley's favorite daily rituals is "sun" napping. Whether he's inside by a window or outside in the yard, he will find that spot and soak up the rays. Barley is a super chill boy who loves being around his people and is looking for a family who will cherish him in his golden years. Barley joined us from Santa Clara Animal Services. Due to his senior status, they felt he would do best to land in a senior focused rescue.

Story
Rhyno-18 month old black lab blend. Neutered- Hi! My name is Rhyno! I’m an 80 lb. neutered lab mix boy that’s 18 months old, full of puppy energy, and up-to-date on all my vaccines and preventatives. My biggest goal in life is to please my person, so I learn quick. I’m house and crate trained, and walk well on a leash. I live to give kisses and to receive belly rubs! In short, I’m a big lovebug! In Texas, I was picked up as a stray with a broken jaw. The shelter tried to stabilize it but was unsuccessful. After a couple of months in the shelter, my jaw healed on its own, albeit a bit crooked. My foster mom says it gives my face character. I enjoy other dogs, but a home with small children probably wouldn’t be a good fit for me as I don’t realize how big I am. Will you give me a forever home to love and be loved in? I promise you won’t regret it! ##1419259##
