Story
Meet Elmo, the mixed breed! Elmo has some big feelings about the world and is looking for an adopter that will set him up for success. Elmo bonds strongly with his people and becomes the ultimate cuddle bug. Elmo appreciates socializing with people and his canine friends on occasion but finds solace in returning home to a quiet, low key house. Interacting with young children is not at the top of Elmo’s to do list, but teens are typically okay. He bonds strongly to his person and is very responsive to positive reinforcement training. Elmo will need a period of decompression in his adoptive home where he can simply get to know his new person and the routine without big outings or events with new people, animals or environments. Gradual confidence building and bonding will be important before Elmo starts going out on the town to busy, fast paced environments. Elmo has enjoyed play time at the Shelter with other dogs but does prefer not to share his people or items with his canine friends. Friends in the world to meet up for playdates – totally ok. Friends in his house around his stuff – not so much. In his most recent home, Elmo was described to be house trained and non-destructive. He really enjoys a couch and is ready to cozy up with his new person after a walk. Elmo`s adoption fee has been sponsored by a generous Good Samaritan! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Rhyno-18 month old black lab blend. Neutered- Hi! My name is Rhyno! I’m an 80 lb. neutered lab mix boy that’s 18 months old, full of puppy energy, and up-to-date on all my vaccines and preventatives. My biggest goal in life is to please my person, so I learn quick. I’m house and crate trained, and walk well on a leash. I live to give kisses and to receive belly rubs! In short, I’m a big lovebug! In Texas, I was picked up as a stray with a broken jaw. The shelter tried to stabilize it but was unsuccessful. After a couple of months in the shelter, my jaw healed on its own, albeit a bit crooked. My foster mom says it gives my face character. I enjoy other dogs, but a home with small children probably wouldn’t be a good fit for me as I don’t realize how big I am. Will you give me a forever home to love and be loved in? I promise you won’t regret it! ##1419259##

Story
Smokey is a fun-loving, 3-year-old mix of Labrador, German Shepherd, and a little something extra that makes him truly one of a kind! This handsome boy was rescued in July 2024, and thanks to the incredible support of our community, he received the care he needed—including TPLO surgery to fix his knee. Now, he’s fully healed, full of life, and ready to find his forever home! Smokey is bursting with energy, enthusiasm, and love! He’s a bouncy, happy boy who thrives on playtime and would be overjoyed to have a doggy sibling to wrestle and romp around with. He’s at his best with larger dogs who can keep up with his playful spirit, though confident smaller pups are welcome too! During his recovery, Smokey stayed with our Behaviorist, where he not only healed but also polished up his doggy manners. He’s eager to keep learning and would thrive with an active family that enjoys walks, beach outings, and training adventures. His playful nature makes him a great match for families with teens and older. And let’s not forget—Smokey is a foodie at heart! He’ll happily soak up all the love (and treats!) you have to offer. His charm is irresistible, and everyone who meets him falls in love instantly—could you be next? Story
Meet Pollo, The American Muscle Muppet (Extra-strong edition)! This muppet is best enjoyed with a harness and a sense of humor Pollo is a large, strong (~75 lb) and energetic boy who needs an experienced, confident handler. He’s eager to get out and explore but pulls hard on leash, so a harness is required—once harnessed, he does better on calm, sniffy walks in low-traffic areas. In the kennel, Pollo can be noisy and over-stimulated when there’s lots of activity, but he settles when things are quieter. He may alarm bark at the front of his kennel yet happily comes out once he sees the leash. With people, he’s more independent than cuddly—he tolerates handling well and was cooperative for veterinary care, though he can be sensitive during harnessing with some individuals.Pollo is very interested in other dogs and can become over-aroused (jumping, fence running, barking), but he is not aggressive. Due to his rowdy play-style, `hormonal` tendancies, he’s currently not in playgroup and may do best as an only dog or with another dog who can give appropriate corrections. Pollo isn’t big on toys or treats, but he knows “sit,” is easy to return to his kennel, and has lots of personality. With structure, patience, and the right setup, Pollo could thrive as a loyal companion for someone who can match his strength and energy.

Story
01/16/26Shiloh is an intelligent and alert dog who is highly engaged with his environment and very affiliative with humans. He is tolerant and affectionate with handlers and enjoys interaction once out of the kennel. Shiloh is highly motivated by other dogs and can become fixated or reactive, especially in shelter settings or when passing adjacent dogs, but he is able to calm with structure, distance, and gradual exposure. He would thrive in an experienced home as the only dog, where he can receive consistent guidance, mental stimulation, and positive outlets for his energy.01/12/26 12:33Volunteer notes: ` Shiloh is a dog who appreciates receiving affection from his handler. When in the play yards with a volunteer he is happy to chase after balls and toys (returning item is an opportunity). He knows sit and stay. He has lived with a smaller dog.` 01/04/26What did we do on today’s adventure:Today was such a fun day! I went on another big adventure! We went to the park, and I even got to walk in the rain. Then I saw a RAINBOW—so beautiful! I sniffed everything and left some very important messages along the way.I still felt a little unsure when people ran past me sometimes, but my friend told me everyone was friendly. We kept a bit of distance, and I did a really good job staying calm. When I saw other doggy friends, I chose to keep some space so I could enjoy my walk peacefully. I got lots of praise from my friend, and that made me so happy! What should potential adopters know about me:Shiloh is a 5-year-old handsome boy with a big heart and a strong bond to his people. Outside the shelter environment, Shiloh shows his best self: he enjoys calm walks, loves attention and settles nicely when given structure and clear guidance. He is a strong dog with generally good leash manners, though he can pull with enthusiasm when something really catches his interest—something that improves greatly with structure and treats. Shiloh can be reactive to other dogs and may become overly excitedby fast-moving people, especially if surprised from behind. With space, awareness, and structure on walks, this is very manageable. These behaviors do not define who he is at home or with his trusted people. When given support and predictability, he does very well and prefers a quieter, more structured lifestyle. What truly makes Shiloh stand out is how deeply he connects with his person. He is highly treat-motivated, smart, and eager to lis
