Story
Meet Jax, the lab mix! Jax came to the Shelter by no fault of his own, his previous guardian had to take over caregiving duties for an elderly family member and needed to find a new home for Jax. Jax’s favorite activities in his previous home are running, playing fetch, being pet and chewing on bones and toys. He has a history of being crated when left alone and sleeps in his crate. His favorite toys are frisbees and balls. In his previous home, he had a female pittie mix that was his friend that he enjoyed playing previously. Any resident dogs are recommended to meet at the Shelter prior to adoption as Jax may be selective in his canine friends. His prior guardian reports that Jax is a smart boy and knows “sit”, “stay”, “lay down”, “off”, and “leave it”. He enjoys riding in the car and is ready to join you on all of your adventures! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
MEET HOWIE! This happy, gentle Lab/Rhodesian Ridgeback/pit mix is a loverboy! Howie is 5 years young and has a heart full of love to give. He was rescued from a California shelter in very rough shape - he had major skin issues/hair loss and had clearly been neglected, but now he looks so much better! He's appreciative of love and attention and is a very affectionate boy. He's a big snuggler and will want to share your bed. He loves going for walks and other outings. He is good with some dogs but not others, so would probably thrive as the only dog in the home, or with a submissive female. He's been waiting a long time for his own home, and we're hoping 2025 is his year! Howie currently needs a foster or forever home. He weighs about 55-60 lbs. Please email for an application.

Story
HI - I'M SWEET THELMA! A 1-1/2-year-old small lab mix (possibly mixed with a little pittie or Ridgeback but we're not sure) in need of a foster or forever home. I weigh only 48 lbs! I was rescued from a crowded California in the nick of time, where I was kenneled with other dogs. I'm great with dogs and a lovebug with people. I'm still a bit of a puppy and am learning the basic ropes, but I'm a smart girl and a fast learner! I would love a wonderful home where I can be loved and taken for walks, hikes and other outings. I'd do best in a home with a single person, a couple or a family with older kids (over 6). I'm currently in Southern California but can be transported to you soon in Northern Cal. Please email for an application.

Story
HI - I'M ROOTIE, and my story is a sad one. I was originally rescued from a shelter many years ago, and just this summer, I was found at a homeless encampment in Southern California. So now I'm safe, but I'm still a bit shy/timid in my new surroundings. I really need a home with a soft bed and a person or people to love me. I may take just a little bit to come out of my shell, but I deserve a wonderful home for once in my life. I'm 8 years old now, but in good health. Can you please foster or adopt me? I'm currently in Southern California, but can be transported to you in Northern Cal at no extra charge.
