Story
Rita is sure to pull on your heart strings with her gentle tail wag and sweet demeanor. Rita is very attached and loyal to her owners. She needs time to trust new people, and it will take patience for her to make human friends. Lots of treats, positive reinforcement and slow introductions are the right way to go. When Rita is rushed meeting new people she can have a bad reaction and bite, so it is very important she interacts with people when she is comfortable. Rita can be leash reactive towards dogs and strangers. She can sometimes make friends with dogs, with a careful muzzled introduction. Rita reacts less when you incorporate lots of positive reinforcement and distance from her trigger, and she will need this type of training longterm to ensure her reactivity does not regress. Rita would do best in a teen only home.

Story
Bella would make a great companion for anyone looking for a low-maintenance dog. She is a 30 lb couch potato who enjoys cuddles, is very affectionate with her person, and makes a great reading buddy. Bella also loves to sleep in and goes to her foster mom's bed around 9 pmto warm it up! Bella is a tripod due to a car accident in Mexico when she was younger. At 6 years old, she moves around well but a home without a lot of stairs would be ideal. While Bella is happy to chill on the couch, she also loves her walks. Moderate daily exercise is great. She enjoys the mental stimulation of sniffing and exploring her local neighbourhood. Plus, walks help to keep her single hind leg strengthened and weight stable. Bella can be selective with dogs. She is currently living in a foster home and has had a few other rescue dogs come and go. She interacts with most of them well. At times, Bella can be reactive to other dogs when she is on her walks. A quiet home is best for Bella with either another dog or someone home more often than not. She can be left for periods on her own. An experienced dog person or couple without kids would be ideal. Initially, Bella was adopted when she arrived from Mexico a few years ago. Unfortunately, she was surrendered to Paws Above Rescue after her adopter became ill and passed away. If you would like to meet Bella or are interested in adopting her, please fill out an application at https://pawsaboverescue.ca/dog-adoption/ Please visit our website www.pawsaboverescue.ca to learn more about this amazing pet and to see other available dogs and cats.

Story
Meet Olivia- aka Pumpkin, Puppy, Sweet Pea Hi ! Im Olivia aka Pumpkin and I am approximately 7 months old. So, a little bit about ME! Overall, I am an amazing puppy if I do say so myself. I am affectionate, and just want to be where you are. I need a minute to warm up to strangers but once Im comfortable, I want to be your friend. I still need some direction as to what is acceptable, but I learn fast. I have been spayed and microchipped and am up to date on my age-appropriate vaccinations. I currently weigh 22 lbs, but still have some growing to do. I am a beautiful, warm toasted coconut color, with short fur. I have unique wine-colored nails! I have two speeds- HIGH and OFF. I love to play hard, and then sleep hard. I am full of Mexican Jumping Beans according to my Foster Mom. Dogs- absolutely yes. I love to play and would do best with a playful canine companion of any size. (Currently fostered with 3 - 95lb foster brothers and I love to play with them but can be a pest. My new family will need to remind me to take a break once in a while. I have met other dogs of all sizes and am fine with all of them. Cats- yes. Raised with cats-I will want to play with cats, so a dog-savvy cat would be fine. Kids- yes. Kids are great but must be mindful of my small size and age. I love everyone but I am still a small baby and kids must be gentle with me and let me sleep. I am also teething, so my little shark teeth are pretty sharp. House trained- work in progress. I use Pee pads by the door. Mom lets me out every few hours. I am not a fan of the cold so sometimes I need some encouragement to go outside, but once out there will Pee and Poop on the grass. Mom has a soft pink sweater for me and that makes it better. I LOVE FOOD, and am currently eating high quality (only the best for me) puppy kibble, and my Foster Mom mixes in some delicious, canned food for me at breakfast time. Kibble and fresh water are available to me at all times. Crate trained- yes for nighttime. I sleep in a crate beside my foster moms bedside. I do not soil the crate. I am happy to sleep all night and go in willingly once Mom says BEDTIME and she gives me a treat when I go in. I have a safe space in the kitchen where I sleep during the day * under the table on a dog bed. I am still a puppy, so I need a place to sleep uninterrupted during the day, and often sleep for a few hours at a time. I am a clever girl who knows sit and paw and treat. I am learning to shake a paw... all for that treat. I do come if you call me, but I will come a lot faster if there is a treat waiting for me. I love walks with my bigger foster brothers - on a body harness. I love to bounce along in between them on walks (they are my bodyguards). I am a little unsure of things if I am alone but will walk with encouragement and treat bribes. Travel- I have been in the car a few times in a crate. I settle in quickly and sleep. I am being fostered in Mississauga. If you are interested in adopting Olivia, please fill out an application by clicking on the Apply to Adopt Olivia link below. Story
Life hasn't always been kind to me, but I'm determined to find the love and happiness I deserve in my golden years. I come from a challenging past in Mozambique, where I was used as a guard dog on the side of a busy road. I wasn't given food or water often, and I endured cruelty that no dog should ever experience. Rocks were thrown at me, and I was beaten. The weight of a padlocked chain around my neck left me starving and emaciated, with my teeth worn away from trying to free myself. Despite the trauma I endured, I was lucky enough to be rescued by compassionate individuals who saw the potential for a better life in me. It took many years, but I've learned to trust people again. I now give kisses, wag my tail at my favorite handlers, and even offer a paw for treats. While I may be particular with human friends, my caregivers have patiently waited for me to heal and understand my triggers, which still haunt me from my painful past. They love me for who I am, scars and all, and I've found comfort in their care. I'm on a quest to find a kind and compassionate family who will love me selflessly. I understand that I may not be the easiest dog to get to know, so I need patient and experienced individuals who are willing to invest time and love into building a bond with me. It may take many visits to determine if I'm the right fit for your home. I require an experienced home where my new family understands my past and is willing to work with me to overcome my fears and anxieties. My triggers from my past may still affect me, so it's important for my new family to be patient and empathetic. If you're willing to open your heart to a senior dog with a traumatic history, you'll find a loyal companion in me. I may take time to fully trust you, but when I do, I promise to repay your kindness with endless love and gratitude.

Story
Bob is a great dog! He has the temperament and personality of a lab. He’s easy-going, affectionate, goofy and totally focused on his humans. He has a lot of energy when he needs it - loves walks and bolting around the yard. That being said, his exercise needs are pretty flexible. When the weather is inclement, he’s just as happy to lounge indoors and still crashes for the night around 8. Bob is good with basic commands (sit, down, stay) and comes reliably when called. He likes learning new things - lives to impress his humans. He loves new people, gets along with any dog and ignores cats. There’s not much else to say. Basically, Bob is a great dog. He’s a lot of fun to have around - sweet, fearless, always up for anything. April 19, 2024, 1:18 pm

Story
We brought this fur baby home two and half years ago - while me and my ex-husband were still together. We had safety to take good care of him then but now I am extremely hurt that I am unable to withstand this responsibility on my own. If I can find a beautiful home / family to love him like their son and I have extreme satisfaction knowing he will be treated with humaneness, kindness and empathy - along with regular compassion for me to be able to see him regularly till I feel we are comfortable keeping him with you for as long as you are happy to keep him. If that means fostering I am happy to work with that arrangement. He is a cuddler so if you are someone who loves to keep him next to you, all day, he is your boy, although he loves to laze around on his own with his toys in a corner when you are busy. You will be on cloud 9 with this boy - he is my baby boy forever. He needs to be taken out for his walk twice to thrice a day to keep him fresh.

Story
Meet Bruno. He’s a 12 week old Labrador Retriever. He’s super calm, quiet, sweet, and fun puppy. He is such a sweet boy, he adapts to any situations he is put in. On walks, we loves meeting new people and getting pets. He does get a little excited when he sees other dogs so we try to hold him back unless we are aware of the other dog. He is very calm with showers as well, he tries to make a break for it but as long as you keep giving him love and some treats, he will be a trooper. He rarely barks (only when he has to go outside), perfect for families and can be great with kids. He shows no signs of food aggression, in fact he's quite the intuitive eater and stops eating once he's full. He's not fully crate trained, but he always goes into the crate when told to and now he's started going in for his naps as well. He's a very quick learner and knows basic commands like sit and come, and recognizes his name. He thrives on a set schedule and will make the perfect addition to any family.

Story
Brown is probably one of the most happy dogs we’ve ever known ! He is excited for just about anything- walks, treats, belly rubs… you name it ! Brown is high energy and looking for a family that can provide him with lots of exercise and training on a daily basis. Brown is great meeting all people including kids! He is jumpy at times and would not be suitable in a home with very small kids. Brown is being assessed with dogs and doing well with female dogs. He will require careful interactions with dogs to ensure he is going to be friendly. Brown was transferred to us from another shelter where he was rescued from a neglect and cruelty situation.

Jack is a favourite among our staff, giving hugs every time we enter his room! He is a laid back, medium energy dog who enjoys attention, but he also at times needs his space. Jack is always proud to show off new tricks and happily struts his stuff on walks. He would be the best sidekick to take on car rides and out for adventures! Jack requires an adult home with no other dogs or cats. If someone gets in Jack's face while he is uncomfortable he may be provoked enough to bite, and needs space until he is more relaxed. Jack can be reactive and aggressive towards all animals and will need management with this. He is super food motivated and clicker trained which makes walking a breeze!
