Story
Teddy is a sweet, low-key guy who is looking for a patient home where he can take things at his own pace. He may be a little shy and fearful with new people, particularly men, but once he feels comfortable, he enjoys gentle attention and can be very relaxed. His favorite things include treats, going for walks, exploring outside, and simply hanging out with his people.
Teddy came to ACCT on 9/21 as an owner surrender due to having accidents in the home. His owner reported that he hides when they try to take him outside to use the bathroom and that he is afraid of men, which was difficult because there are men in the home.
Teddy walks nicely on leash and enjoys stopping to sniff and explore. He is food-motivated and takes treats gently, which can be a great way to help him build confidence. During his recent dog meet, Teddy had good greetings, sniffing and moving away on his own. He was also able to walk past another dog without stopping to sniff and continued moving on his own. A dog meet is recommended for any potential canine housemate.
Because Teddy is vision-impaired and can be startled by sudden handling, he does best when people approach him slowly and give him plenty of warning before touching him. He is looking for an adult-only home with patient adopters who will allow him time to settle in and build trust.

**MEDICAL NOTES**
9/23 During exam: Teddy is Bright, alert, responsive. Body condition Score is 4/9 and Muscle condition score is 2/3. Nuclear sclerosis OU. No ocular/nasal/aural discharge. Normal cervical palpation. Severe dental calculus, halitosis, no apparent oral masses or foreign bodies. Mild muscle wasting along epaxials. Ambulatory x4, no lameness
Assessment:
- Vision impairment
- Severe dental disease
- Reported inappropriate eliminations
9/22 during the initial intake exam- both eyes are cloudy, ears had wax, overall bright, alert, responsive and food motivated.
**BEHAVIOR NOTES**
9/24 Per staff- During dog meet Teddy had good greetings, sniffing and moving away on his own
9/23 Per Staff: A volunteer was trying to return Teddy to kennel and reached for him touching him from behind quickly and he air snapped at her. I offered him a hot dog which he ate and led him to his kennel with a hot dog and the volunteer was able to remove his leash.
9/23 Per Staff: Kennel Presentation: Pacing the front of his kennel with a high tail, closed mouth, ears forward. Ate the treat I offered through the bars.
Leash Skills: Continued to pace as I opened the door, able to leash, he flinched slightly as the leash touched him, came right out and walked loose leash outside stopping occasionally to sniff.
Sociability: Sniffed around the yard, high tail, ears forward, tense body, back legs would tremble when standing still. Would come over for treats which he took gently. Went slow with handling due to being vision impaired, tolerated all handling with the same body language.
Play: n/a
Dog Interaction: Walked past a dog in another yard, did not stop to sniff and kept moving on his own.
Return to Kennel: Walked back loose leash with the same body language as walking out. Stopped outside his kennel and needed to be led to his kennel with a treat, hopped right in for a treat. Moved slowly and approached from the side for removing his leash and was able to remove it by hand.
Color Level: Blue
Recommendations and considerations: Go slow, likes treats.
9/21 Per Owner: He was left with us a few years ago. He is very skittish and does not like to go out to use the bathroom and will go over the house. We have already replaced our carpets. He will run away when we try to get him to go. We both work, and it is hard for us to take care of him due to our schedules. We both have medical conditions that make it difficult to take care of him.
His accidents are getting worse, and when we try to put him out, he hides. He is afraid of men, and I have a husband and two sons. He is not housebroken and needs work, still learning, and has frequent accidents. Fully crate trained — spends time in crate with no issues. Low-energy couch potato. On leash, he walks calmly with no pulling. Knows his name and commands like Sit, No, and Off.
Favorite activities: Exploring outdoors, going for walks, going to the dog park, hanging out with owners, being petted, getting a bath, swimming, or playing in water.
Fearful of new people (stranger danger). Tried to bite but didn't make contact. Around strangers, children, and dogs, he is nervous/fearful/shy, and around cats, he is neutral with no reaction.
Noted to be having diarrhea but no changes in appetite, drinking, urinating, or weight, and no vomiting. Overall, the owner noted he is sweet.
