Story
One of the Canine Care staff members describes me as having the cutest smile and an adventurous spirit to match. How is that for an intro? I feel like I’m blushing a little…I enjoy exploring everything, running free like a bird in a play yard and making every day fun. I’m ready for my next adventure…with my family. Are you ready too? Since I tested positive for heartworm, I’m looking for a home that would foster me while I undergo the treatment (still paid for and coordinated through Save-A-Pet’s cooperating vets). Once I test negative, then we could formalize my status as family member to “adopted.”

Story
Meet Sassy — A Little Dog With a BIG Personality Sassy is a 3-year-old Dachshund/Pug mix who is looking for something she may not have had before: a safe, stable home where she knows she belongs. We don’t know much about Sassy’s past. She came to us from a high-kill shelter in Southern Indiana, and like many rescue dogs whose lives have been turned upside down, she is still trying to figure out what is expected of her. One minute Sassy can be a little skittish and unsure, and the next she is bouncing around, happy, playful and ready to cover you in kisses. That change in behavior isn’t unusual for a dog who is still learning that she is safe. Time, consistency and patience will help Sassy gain confidence and understand that she is finally home. And underneath all of that uncertainty is an incredibly affectionate little girl. Sassy loves people, children and other dogs. She happily sleeps in bed with her foster mom and is always ready for snuggles and kisses. She wants to be part of the family and close to her people. Sassy Is Still a Work in Progress Although Sassy is 3 years old, her new family needs to approach her training as though they were bringing home an 8-week-old puppy. She is not completely house trained and will have accidents. She has chewed household items and needs to learn what belongs to her and what doesn’t. She is not currently crate trained, but we believe crate training would be very beneficial for her and could give her a safe, predictable space of her own. Most importantly, Sassy is an escape risk. She may bolt through an open door or look for an opportunity to escape from a yard. Her new family must take this seriously. Doors, gates, fencing and outdoor time will need to be carefully managed while she learns boundaries and becomes secure in her new environment. This doesn’t make Sassy a bad dog. It makes her an untrained dog who needs someone willing to teach her. The Home Sassy Needs Sassy’s ideal family will understand that adopting her means making a commitment to training, supervision and consistency—not simply bringing home a cute little dog. Because of her escape tendencies, a senior-only household is not the right placement for Sassy. She is small, quick and can easily slip unnoticed toward an opening door. We also do not recommend a home with toddlers. Sassy likes children, but during this important adjustment and training period, she needs a significant amount of attention and supervision herself. A household already managing the constant needs of a toddler may simply have too many competing demands. Older children who can understand doors, gates and Sassy’s training rules could be wonderful companions for her. Her new family must be prepared for accidents, chewing, training sessions and the possibility that progress won’t happen overnight. But they should also be prepared for kisses, cuddles, laughter, companionship and one very happy little dog. Sassy doesn’t need perfection. She needs someone who won’t give up on her while she’s learning. She deserves a home where she isn’t simply another pet in the house, but a cherished member of the family whose safety, training and emotional security are priorities. Give Sassy the time to understand that she finally belongs, and we believe this funny, affectionate, energetic little girl has every opportunity to become an amazing companion. Sassy’s Adoption Details Age: 3 years Breed: Dachshund/Pug mix Personality: Affectionate, playful, energetic, sometimes skittish Dogs: Loves other dogs Kids: Loves children; older children recommended House training: Still learning Crate trained: No; crate training recommended Special consideration: High escape/door-dashing risk Vaccinations: Current Heartworm: Negative Spayed: Yes Status: Ready for adoption Sassy’s biggest requirement isn’t a fenced yard, a certain kind of house or a perfect training résumé. It’s commitment. She needs someone willing to teach her the things no one may have taken the time to teach her before. If you would like to meet this dog, please call Teri at 630-897-7454. The adoption fee is $275. Adoption fee includes: - microchip - spay/neuter - age appropriate vaccinations: Bordetella, DH(L)PP, rabies - heartworm preventive and flea/tick preventive - deworming
