Story
Looks like: Yorkie Male, 10 years old, 5 pounds You don't need to travel to a galaxy far, far away to find your new best friend and guardian. Meet the ever so handsome Han Solo! This tiny guy has a mighty personality! He loves adventuring with his person, whether it be hiking, running errands, walking around the neighborhood, or snuggling on the couch. Han Solo loves snacks and is very food-motivated, so training with treats would be a breeze. While he is fine with resident dogs of his own size, he can be a little unspoken to larger dogs but he is also fine with small dogs or flying 'solo' - as he seems more of a people pup. In true Yorkie fashion, he is protective of his people while out on walks, barking at passersby, but he is working on this with positive reinforcement and would do well to continue this with his new family. He is a friendly, funny fellow and it's unknown how he does with kiddos or kitties. He hails from the far away planet of Hitchcock Road Animal Services after being discovered wandering as a stray. Sweet and spunky Han Solo would love to be your new adventure buddy. Just make sure to bring the snacks!May 28, 2023, 4:31 am

Story
Looks like: Yorkie, Chihuahua Mix Male, 8 years old, 12 pounds This little guy sure knows how to steal your attention! If it were up to him, he would prefer to be held all day every day so he could savor the time with his people. Sweet little Oliver can be overly excited and vocal when making new friends, but aside from a few barks, he gets along well with other mellow dogs both big and small. He gets along with cats and kids as well. Oliver came into our program after his guardian had to move into a home that does not allow any pets.May 28, 2023, 4:31 am

Zoey lived with my small family for a few years before taking her to California. She's still very enthusiastic and spry for her age. A nice companion to have around.

Story
All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated, and microchipped.  * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. Our adoption fees vary. Each biography will specifically list the adoption fee.Adoption fee: $700 Sprite is an 8 month old Yorkie mix weighing 6 lbs who came to DPS in pain. Poor thing was just a tiny scared pup with little spindly legs and the vet discovered a small fracture in one of her front legs. It was splinted and she went through weekly bandage changes at our vet until she was finally healed up. She is now ready for adoption! She still holds her leg up occasionally because the muscles are in the process of getting stronger, and the vet says that in time, she will put full weight on her leg again. Sprite's foster family nursed her back to health and took amazing care of her. Here is their report! Sprite took all of 30 minutes to warm up to the people in the house! She was pretty immediately cuddly and very attached to us. The biggest difference now is that she is a lot more playful and more inclined to play fetch or even entertain herself with toys where as in the beginning, she only wanted cuddles and was not interested in playing.   She was much slower to warm to our resident dog but now they get along very well! When she first meets a new dog, it can be a bit hit or miss if they’ll get along straight off the bat. She can be a bit sassy and territorial over whatever she sees as “hers”. She is particularly protective over her people and her bed/couch. She’ll growl to let them know to back off. This behavior typically lasts a couple days/interactions before she realizes that they’re not a threat and then she’ll stop snarling at them   Sprite is the snuggliest, cuddliest, sweetest dog we’ve ever fostered. She wants nothing more than to be in your lap, be held, be cuddled, and give and received kisses. She is 100% a Velcro dog. She wants to do everything with us and always be involved. She loves to be held and carried around like a baby. We hosted easter with our family so we had 16 people over and she was not on the ground for more than 10 minutes the entire day! She loved it and every time we would put her down, she would beg to be picked up again.   She is quite smart and very food motivated. She learned how to sit in an afternoon and I’m sure with some patience, she could learn many other commands! We’ve taken her to many restaurants/hardware stores/friends houses/farmers markets and she has done so well at each of these new places. As long as she’s with her people, she’s happy. She will let out a growl if people approach her too quickly but if they meet her slowly and allow her to sniff them first, she’s a big lover.   Sprite will sleep through the night in her kennel but she will typically cry the first few minutes after you put her in the kennel and the second the first person in the house is awake, she will wake up and demand to be let out of her kennel. She prefers to sleep in bed right next to us and she is the first one to hop into bed! She likes to sleep under the covers and will cuddle right up against you. She does great and sleeps through the entire night. When she’s in bed, she’s happy to sleep in as long as you do and will give you many good morning kisses and tail wags when it’s time to get up!   We normally get up around 7am and immediately go out in the backyard. She’s quick to go potty so once she does, we head inside for some breakfast. She’s more of a grazer so we make sure she has multiple opportunities throughout the day to eat. I work from home so her preferred spot throughout the day is right in my lap while I’m working. She looooves to take naps and curl up right in any available lap. If I’m in the kitchen cooking, she’ll typically wait for me in the kitchen and is never more than 5 steps away! If foster dad is home and on the couch, she prefers to join and sit with him while he’s watching TV. From time to time, she’ll wander to the couch for a nap on her own but generally, she prefers to be with people.   We typically go for a walk mid day and do a little 15 minute walk around the neighborhood. She walks pretty well on leash but she likes to take it slow and steady and smell all the smells along the way. I feel pretty confident that once she builds up some more strength in her leg, she would love to join for longer walks and maybe even hikes! We’ve taken her along with us during hikes but put her in our doggy backpack to give her leg a rest. We let her into our fenced in backyard a few times throughout the day. We’ve found as long as we’re able to let her in the yard every 3-4 hours and make sure we don’t go inside until she goes potty, we don’t have any accidents in the house! However, if she gets distracted playing in the backyard and we don’t make sure she goes potty before heading inside, she might have an accident.   If we leave the house and can take her with us, we always do. We’ll put her leash on to walk on her own (or be carried around) or we’ll put her in a little doggy backpack. As long as she’s with us, she’s happy! When we’re not able to take her with us, we will put her in her kennel. She hates being left alone and cries to let all the neighbors know.   Sprite likes to play with other dogs and gets along well with other dogs, but she may growl initially, so it's important to monitor intros carefully, especially because she is so small. She likes to wrestle and tries to tackle our (much bigger) dog. She’s also still learning doggy manners because she will bite his neck./ears when she wants him to play with her. Luckily he’s very gentle but ideally, the adopted family’s resident dog would behave similarly and be tolerant of her puppy behavior and/or would be of similar size.   Sprite has moments of playfulness particularly when we let her in the yard and she and our dog have a random spurt of zoomies or when we intentionally rile her up to play fetch or tug in the house. She is still a puppy and is happy to play like a puppy. But in general, she’s a lounger. She is still young so she has some puppy energy but I think as she gets older, she’ll be happy in a medium to low energy household. 5 minutes of fetch or a walk around the block is enough to wear her out.   Sprite, like many Yorkies, can be a bit of an alarm-barker. She will bark when the doorbell rings, when people first enter the house, etc. Once she meets the newcomer, though, she will settle right down.   My favorite thing about Sprite is how cuddly she is. She is a frequent guest star on all my work calls because my coworkers have learned that she is always in my lap. Every time I get on a call, we start the meeting by putting her in front of the camera to say hi! She loves taking naps together and will crawl completely under the covers and curl up right against my back or against my stomach. When we wake up, she’ll army crawl towards my face and give me all the kisses! She’s a big baby and loved to be held like one!   Sprite is still a puppy and will need an adopter who will continue to work on training with her. She is only an option for a home with prior dog experience. If there are children in the home, they should be over the age of 8 and of the gentle sort- we don't want Sprite to break another leg! :)May 28, 2023, 6:30 pm
