Story
NAME: Brooks BREED: Pit Bull BIRTHDAY: 2012 WEIGHT: 60lbs ADOPTION FEE: $200   Brooks spent his Christmas in an NC shelter where he was marked as "the shelter favorite". We had a spot open and were happy to save that perpetually worried face of his. Brooks had reason to be worried in the shelter and on the plane ride to us, but learned quickly that he was safe in his quiet foster home with his foster brother, another senior male Pit. They have lived together for almost two months with no issues, although Brooks does need the help of an experienced owner to calm him down during playtime. He thinks he's still a young pup and can overstimulate easily, especially during rough play. However, he corrects easily and is a very devoted boy who wants to follow his person around all day into every room just to be close (too close sometimes- be careful or you'll trip over his loving but bulky body). He loves all people and will sit awkwardly close to your face and try to give kisses and even little love nips on occasion; not to hurt you, just to tell you that he loves you and wants you to rub his face and pet him. For this reason he would do best in a home with older/dog-savvy kids. He rarely barks, doesn't jump, rides well in the car, always has a wagging tail and loves a belly rub. He also snores like a bear almost immediately upon falling asleep, which will certainly help to scare away predators and/or burglars. He walks best on a front clip harness leash and LOVES going for walks.   He also came from the shelter with a mass on his abdomen which we had removed and biopsied. Unfortunately it was malignant and even though the cancerous mass was removed in surgery, the vet could not confirm that the cancer was totally removed. She did let us know she has seen dogs live for years after a diagnosis like this. Brooks certainly doesn't seem to know he is sick, and we have no intentions of telling him. He eats well, is active, otherwise healthy, and super loving: we think he will make someone happy for years to come. What we want most is to see him to go someone who will love him and let him be devoted to them, so that he can live his remaining days with a real family who will never abandon him again.   Although Brooks lives with another dog currently, we are looking for a home where he can be the only pet. He is not on medications at this time, but like all dogs his age/size he needs a daily joint supplement and may require pain medications in the future. May 25, 2023, 12:21 am

Story
Meet Coco! Coco is one of our longest residents at the shelter and is looking for a special home to help teach her that the world is not so scary. We are looking for a very structured foster or adoptive home for Coco due to some of the behaviors we have seen here in the shelter. Coco is very excitable and has a hard time calming herself down. When she is kept to a routine, less of these behaviors appear. Staff has been working with Coco to learn that calm behavior equals more attention and rewards! All interactions with Coco need to be done in a calm manner and stop if Coco starts getting overstimulated. This girl will need to go into an adult-only home, and without other animals. She would do best in a home where someone can dedicate time long-term to her training. We are unsure of how Coco was treated in her past, but we can only imagine it was not kindly. She is quick to react to situations or people that she finds uncomfortable or scary and can take multiple meetings to warm up to new people. Due to this, we are suggesting only positive training in her future. Coco is very treat motivated and enjoys snuffle mats and they have worked as great training tools for her! Coco has stolen the hearts of many staff and we would love to see her thrive in a home. The staff who works with her has seen how sweet Coco can be and how hard she tries to be a "good dog." We are able to see the playful, goofy side of this pup and want her to find a home where she is comfortable enough to show that to someone else! If you are potentially interested in fostering or adopting Coco, please speak to staff to further discuss her behaviors and what placement we are seeking for her.

Story
Meet Buster an amazingly perky pup who has been in our care for over 300 days! On 3/16/23, Buster had his leg amputated, and he is on a strict diet to lose some extra pounds he has gained during his stay at the shelter. Buster enjoy short walks away from the road, as he is still adjusting to being a tripod. He also loves to run and play in our yards! This handsome pup is a big puller on the leash and that is unfortunately how his leg ended up amputated. We would recommend any adopters take walks with him away from the road as he is overly interested in cars! Buster has a big heart with lots of love to give! He loves people and kids, but since he has a high prey drive, he does not do well with other animals. This big boy wants to be your one and only fur baby! Buster loves to play ball and loves squeaky toys and will happily toss them around for ages. Buster also loves snoozing away in comfortable beds but prefers heavy duty material since he sometimes nibbles at the edges. Buster will not be able to live in a home with other animals. Buster is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

Story
Say hello to Diesel! This handsome, senior boy was returned to us after his owner was no longer able to care for him and he is looking for a home to call his own! At nine-years old, Diesel is an easier going boy and has enjoyed snoozing the day away in his kennel. He has his spunky moments and enjoys munching away on treats. Diesel lived in a home with cats and ferrets but would need to be the only pup in the home! He has done well with children here at the shelter but would do best in a home with children who understand that he is getting into his senior years and may need his time to relax. His previous owner stated that he is house broken and that he is a cuddle bug and will snuggle up underneath the blankets on the bed with you! If you are looking for a senior, happy-go lucky pup, Diesel may be the perfect companion for you! Diesel is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
