Story
Howdy, my name is Dallas and I am a fun-loving guy. I lived with a very nice family most of my life; I had some kids to play with, went to dog parks, had a fenced yard to play in and learned life skills like housetraining; I even lived with a couple kitties and was friendly to them. When I started to protect the furniture from my young masters, it caused some disruption in the home and I came to WCHS to find a new place to live. I was respectful of my person's things and had the luxury of roaming free when I was alone. I must confess that I am not a fan of crates and find them quite confining. At the shelter I am learning to be more comfortable in a crate because I have a soft-sided crate in my kennel that I can go into and out of whenever I want to. When I get to my new home, I would be willing to continue practicing with a crate; maybe you could take the door off one and make it available to me. A cozy blanket and some fun toys might make it inviting such that I could come and go as I please and become more comfortable hanging out in a crate. I am hoping for a calm assertive leader who will set some boundaries in a patient and positive manner because I am a sensitive lad who just needs guidance. A while back I lived with a Lab and also did well with a Ridgeback at my dog sitter's place; I have also been enjoying participating in the playgroups at WCHS. When I am around other pooches I would appreciate if no food or resources like bones are in the area because I prefer to enjoy those things in private. Speaking of eating, I would rather not use metal bowls; I find the racket they can make very unnerving. Perhaps a plastic or ceramic bowl would be an option; I could even enjoy my meals using a foraging mat to make it a fun and mentally engaging activity. In my previous home I had learned to sit by the door and whine when I needed to use the outdoor facilities. When I come into my new home it would be wise for me to have plenty of opportunities to get outside until we learn each other's signals and routines. I have been described as friendly, affectionate, playful and calm; I enjoy a rousing game of tug and think bubbles are wonderfully entertaining. I am a young lad who needs plenty of exercise to stay happy and healthy; I think going for walks is a spectacular way to explore and spend time with my person. Stop by to meet me in person because I think you will agree that I am 74 pounds of stupendous.#1

Story
Greetings, my name is Emmie and I am an award-winning pooch. I originally came to WCHS as a wee pup and was adopted by a very nice person. I had a great time with them and was learning all sorts of things. My person has described me as ‘clingy' because I am sort of a Velcro dog; I really like to be with my people as often as possible. Unfortunately, my person's schedule changed and they did not think they had the time to give me the life they thought I needed; so, they brought me back to WCHS to find a new home. I am a cheerful and optimistic gal so I am sure there are bright and sunny days in my future. Let me tell you a few things about me and I am sure you will agree that I am a spectacular girl who may just be perfect for you. I used to live with a kitty and although I have been known to chase her a bit, it was all in fun and I was friendly to her. She may not admit it, but I think she actually liked the games we played. I also had the opportunity to go to dog parks to play with other canines and that was incredibly fun and a great way to get some exercise. I also get to be part of playgroups at the shelter and that is always a rousing good time. I am a bit of a rough player so I do need my mates to understand that about me. In my previous home I had a very cozy setup in a crate where I could relax and snooze when I was alone. Limiting my movement around the house when I was unsupervised took away the temptation to be naughty and chew on plastic items that were not dog toys. At night I had the luxury of sleeping in my person's bed and that was quite lovely because we could cuddle all night long. I am very affectionate and could be a wonderful lapdog at only 44-pounds; I am quite the lap lover. In my previous home I learned to bark at my person to ask to go outside so I could use the facilities. When I get into my new home it might be wise to provide plenty of opportunities to go outside until we learn each other's signals and routines. I love to go for walks and think they are a fabulous way to spend time together and bond; I really hope to be your constant companion and BFF. I must confess that I do pull a bit when walking on a leash, so I do need more practice in that area. It might be nice to take some classes with you so I can learn and practice obedience and manners; I have a tendency to jump up on people when I am saying hello. I know the cues for ‘sit', ‘stay' and ‘outside' and would enjoy learning more human words with your patient and positive training techniques. If I am polite and have exquisite manners, I am sure I will be welcome everywhere we go so I hope we can work on that. I am friendly, outgoing, tolerant and playful; I love to play fetch. So, what do you think - I sound pretty magnificent, don't I? Come by to meet me in person and discover how delightful I am.#1

Story
Yahoo, my name is Teddy and I am a spitfire and a perpetual motion machine. I was a stray at MADACC (Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission) before I was transferred to WCHS. I am hoping for an active family who help me grow into the best pooch ever; I have enormous potential. I am adorable, lively and fun but I do have a ton to learn, discover and explore. I am counting on you to help me safely navigate the world and experience new things each day to allow me to grow into a confident young dog. So many things that seem common to you are completely new to me. I think I would be game for any activity that we could do together; I love to spend time with humans. When we are out and about, perhaps we can play dog parkour to keep my mind thinking and build self-assuredness. I have already shown that I readily hop up on a bench just to sit next to the volunteer who is walking me. I do need some practice walking on a leash because that is a new activity for me and I tend to head in random directions on a whim. I weigh about 38 pounds now but I do have plans to get bigger so it would be lovely to take some classes with you so that I learn manners and proper social skills. I hope to be your constant companion; to be welcome everywhere we go I know I must be polite. I also know I have to practice something called house-training so I know proper potty behavior. A routine, lots of yummy treats and praise will go a long way to helping me master house-training when I potty outside. Puppies and dogs need love, exercise, mental stimulation and consistency to be healthy, happy and confident. I would be very open to all sorts of housemates; I can be a bit mischievous and may find any other critter as a potential playmate, so they will need to understand that about me. I often explore the world with my mouth and while I am teething, I like to chew; my little puppy teeth are very sharp, so if I am around children we should always be supervised and I should be offered acceptable things to chew on. It is important that children learn about respecting me, too, and treat me gently because I am fragile and sensitive. Raising a puppy is a big responsibility, a lot of work, and it may interrupt your sleep cycle for a bit, but a courteous and well-behaved dog is certainly worth the investment and I promise to be loyal, love you unconditionally and be a companion forever. Stop by to meet me in person; I think we could have a splendid time together.#1

Story
Meet Tika! Hello there, my name is Tika! I'm a senior lady now, weighing 55 pounds. Much like the meaning of my name, sun maiden, or flower, I am as beautiful as they come. And pretty perfect if I do say so myself! I'm good with all dogs, big or small, and I'd likely do well with kids, too. But cats, well, I'll just say "no thank you" about them. I'm the very best girl and go potty outside. I'd love having a fenced yard to run in, but I also am fine with walks and going to the dog park! I love my humans, and since I was always a loved member of a family until my owner passed away, I can't wait to be a part of a family again! I love being with my foster mom, but she says that I'm ready to move on to a forever family of my own. I live in an apartment here, and I don't make a single peep, but I'd really love to live in a house with more room. I love to snuggle with my people, but I also really enjoy my crate! Sometimes, I'm hesitant to jump on the furniture, so I may need a little encouragement or even a little boost up by you to watch a good episode of FRIENDS. That's what we will be forever! The best of friends. And if you have another doggo that I can be friends with, well, that's just an added bonus! *Tika will be traveling to WI on March 3rd and can go to her forever home then. Story
Meet Rue! Hey, y'all, my name is Rue! Are you ready to hear about the sweetest girl who has gone through some not so sweet times? Well, have a sit down and read a little about me! Let's start with the good. I'm a super good girl, and as a senior, I've got my pottying outside down to a science. I'll even let you know with a bark when I'm done out there! I'm about 40 pounds and get along with other dogs and cats, too. I lived with a bunch of them in my past. I live with a really little human right now, so I think I'd do well with small humans who are nice to me. The not so nice things about my past are that I was originally part of a welfare investigation but was dumped with another dog. Some of my behaviors at the shelter that found me say I wasn't taken very good care of. I would go into the dog house when I was out in the yard and stir up the straw in there like I was looking for some warmth. But now I'm told I'll never have to worry about that stuff for the rest of my life! I'm a really gentle girl, and I only want to make my humans happy. I know how to sit when you tell me to, but when you leave, I'll try to follow you out the door so I can be with you. I enjoy car rides and attention. I'll lay by you on the couch, and I'm enjoying finding out what the finer things in life are! I probably never knew what a dog bed or toys were, and now I get to see for myself what all the talk is regarding those things! Now I just need to find my forever people who are willing to show me how great life can be. Are you ready to be my forever? *Rue is being fostered in Edgar, WI. Story
Hi there, my name is Slim Jim. Or sometimes it's Bubba. Or Bubby. Or Slimbo. Or Rambo. I have a lot of names. My foster family says I have a big heart, big smarts, and big farts!  I have a big heart because I love lots of stuff, like making new human friends and CAR RIDES. Seriously I have no sense of stranger danger and will try to jump in anyone's car for a ride. I love a good chew treat and cheeseburgers. I love my blankie and sleeping all snuggled up in my crate, so will you please tuck me in every night? I love snuggles and giving kisses, but maybe bigger kids would be best for me because I REALLY get into the snuggles and don't want to accidentally knock a tiny human down. I do NOT love the cold or rainy weather, but I love dressing up in my sweaters and jackets to stay warm! I love butt scratches, tummy rubs, all kinds of adventures, and learning new things.    Speaking of learning new things, I have big smarts in this big noggin of mine! I pick up on new tricks super fast and already know how to sit, lay down, shake, wait, back (to sit in the back seat of the car), cross (the street), and turn left (I'm working on 'right'). I am great at food puzzles, and especially love my snuffle mat. I am crate trained and super polite on my leash when we're out for walks. I even know how to use agility equipment and am learning how to use a doggy treadmill. My recent record is 13 MPH!   My big farts are not so bad if I use a puzzle feeder, because then I don't eat so fast. It's this stubby, snorty nose of mine, I can't help but take in extra air.   There are a few things I don't love, mostly kitties (I want to eat them) and other dogs (they scare me). I take a cheap, daily anxiety medication (cost is under $10/mo) which helps me be more comfortable and my foster family has done a TON of training with me. They are sponsoring a private training session for whoever adopts me, to set me up for success in my new home!    Also, because I have such big smarts I take some things as a personal challenge. Crates and fences, for example. I think they are puzzles to be solved! I need a beefier crate than most dogs and a solid plan to keep me in the yard if I'm off-leash, because if that fence isn't solid like Mount Everest I am outtie! But I don't chew on or damage things in the house, don't worry about that.    I've been waiting for a home of my very own for far too long! So if you're looking for a Very Good Boy who you can have a lot of fun with, please reach out and ask for me, Slim Jim aka Bubba aka Bubby aka Slimbo aka Rambo.         Approximate DOB: 2021 Foster Home Location: Madison    If you are interested in adopting one of our wonderful dogs, you can apply on our website: https://forms.gle/MGakwmFh92UiK9iM6     Please allow several days for us to process your application. We are a small, all-volunteer group and we are doing our best to work quickly! After the application is processed we will make arrangements for you to meet the dog that interest you. All of our dogs are raised in our homes and live with us until they are adopted. They live with us as part of our families so we know them very well and we can help you find your perfect dog!     Our adoption fees:  Adults (up to 7 years): $275 Seniors (8 years and up): $200     All dogs are spayed or neutered, dewormed, vaccinated for rabies, bordatella and distemper, tested for heartworm and microchipped.February 22, 2024, 3:55 pm
