Story
Meet Scooby! Scooby is an adolescent Anatolian/Malinois mix with a medium build (25-59 lbs) and a heart full of potential! This serious yet chill dude is the ultimate trail, walking, or running buddy, thriving on adventure and daily exercise. He’s fantastic with other dogs, loves a rough-and-tumble play style, and respects older dogs who set boundaries. Scooby rides like a dream in the car and is both crate- and house-trained, though he’s not one to be left alone unsupervised—he’s a bit too curious for that! This high-energy pup isn’t suited for apartment life due to his very high-pitched bark and need for daily runs alongside walks. Scooby shines with positive reinforcement training and is eager to learn. He’s working on overcoming some anxiety, including crate nervousness and discomfort being outside alone, as he craves being close to his people. Scooby can be selectively fearful of random things (think skateboards, lawnmowers, or even a Hawaiian shirt!), but he’s learning to handle his fears by staying back and alerting his handler. His foster family has been using treat-based retreat, desensitization, and counter-conditioning to build his confidence, and he’s making great progress. Scooby’s cautious nature doesn’t stop him from enjoying life—he did wonderfully meeting neighbors and stayed calm at a café surrounded by people and dogs. He’s still working on ignoring those pesky distractions (like squirrels!), but his foster family calls him an awesome little dude who’s ready to find his forever home. If you’re an active, patient adopter ready to help Scooby continue to grow into a confident companion, he’s the perfect match for you! Apply to adopt Scooby today and give this special guy the loving, active home he deserves!

Story
Come meet adoptable dogs every Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM - 4 PM at our Adoption Center located at 11116 Fairfax Station Rd. Fairfax Station, VA 22039. We can also schedule time to meet a specific dog at the Adoption Center during the week by appointment - just fill out the application and we will follow up with you! For animals in foster homes, please submit an online application and a member of our Adoptions team will reply with next steps. If you are interested in adopting this dog, please fill out our dog adoption questionnaire and e-mail it to: barroso.selma@gmail.com Sudi is a super amazing dog from Iran , where she endured horrible cruelty that we cannot even begin to fathom. As a working farm dog, when she did not perform to her owner's satisfaction he cut off her front paws, dragged her behind a car and hit and kicked her. How she lived we do not know. But thankfully, an Iranian loving person rescued her and through a lot of hard work, Sudi left Iran for Canada and then made her way to us here at Homeward Trails. She recently was fitted for prosthetic feet and is doing remarkably well in them, getting a new lease on life that allows her to be more mobile. While we thought she may need hip surgery to replace her hip socket, we are currently waiting on that per her veterinarian orthopedist's suggestion to have a specialist determine if it is workable. For now, she remains on pain meds and steroids to address the issue, which may end up being her long-term solution. Sudi needs an adoptive family. She is great with all people but does not like other animals enough to live with them. It may be her low-level pain or fear but we have tried and we now know she wishes to be an only animal. This girl is a truly remarkable example of endurance and spirit. That she even trusts humans at all after what has been done to her is truly, truly inspiring. She will do best in a home with few stairs - or least a home where she can get inside/outside without many. She would love a yard where she can lounge in the sun. Whatever orthopedic issues come her way in the near future in terms of surgery will be covered by Homeward Trails. We are proud to partner with the following veterinarians who offer a free first exam for your animal, exclusively for HT adopters: Caring Hands Animal Hospital, Palisades Veterinary Clinic, Sunshine Animal Hospital and Clarendon Animal Care and all VCA Animal Hospitals. Additionally, any VCA hospital will cover illnesses up to $250 at no cost to any Homeward Trails adopter. We also provide free online workshop with a professional dog trainer at Fur-Get Me Not within the first 30 days of adopting - just for HT adopters in the Arlington/Alexandria/Falls Church/DC area. Start your new dog out on the right foot with this valuable, expert guidance FREE! You can save animals like this one by becoming a foster! Fosters are like way stations between high kill shelters and forever homes. We need fosters so that we can save dogs before they are euthanized at the shelters. Story
Please contact Kady Hammer (KadyH@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet.the best and longest holiday you'll ever have! HOLIDAY NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name:   Holiday     Best Guess for Breed:  Anatolian shepherd mix    Best Guess for Age:  3 years as of May 2025     SEX:  Female   Approximate Weight: 55 lbs as of 5/20/25; she is underweight at this weight   Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen her with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters!   Currently Living at:   Texas shelter right now; will make her way to Lucky Dog's South Carolina rescue campus on 5/17 for heartworm treatment and then on to the DC area!   Special adoption considerations: Holiday is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs.  All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care.  After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months. We are happy to discuss this treatment and which phase of the study this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left!   Holiday is Looking For:  Her forever home. This sweetie landed a shelter as far south in Texas as you can get, heartworm positive and significantly underweight. She's slammed the book shut on that chapter and has opened a new one - one where she has her own humans, a family who cares for her and loves her. One where she gets to go on sniffy walks and spend plenty of time outside and just enjoy life.Going by her face and her body, she likely has some Anatolian shepherd in her along with something else. Let your Google-fu shine strong as you research Anatolian shepherds. That breed loves their family, their humans. Utterly loyal. Holiday has so much to offer her forever family. What do you say? Is Holiday the one for your home and your heart?   What My Foster Says About Me:  We will update this once she has spent time in foster care.    Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken.  All of our dogs are working on their crate training.  TO ADOPT:    The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.  If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog   Lucky Dog Animal Rescue does our best to provide accurate information about the dogs we have for adoption. Story
Coco (now Roxy) is a sweet and playful one-year-old shepherd mix who loves to show affection with gentle head butts and can’t resist her squeaky toys. She’s a smart girl who’s already learning to stay on her bed and picks up new things quickly. Roxy enjoys running and playing, so she would do best in a home with a fenced yard and plenty of space to explore. She gets along well with other dogs and has a friendly, loving personality with people. If you’re looking for a loyal and intelligent companion who’s ready to learn and love, Roxy might be the perfect match!
