Story
HI - I'M PACO! I am a sweet 1-year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix in need of a forever home! I was rescued from the streets of Ensenada, Mexico, by a compassionate Canadian couple who then tried to find me a home. Eventually I was placed in a rescue and am doing great! Now, I spend my days running around, playing with my doggy pals, and then taking a much needed nap! I weigh only 40 lbs and am a happy, fun-loving boy. I am an affectionate sweetheart and love nothing more than to snuggle. I'm also fully housebroken and great with cats! Personality-wise, I'm quite mellow but I do get excited when I'm showered with love and attention. I can't wait to become someone's best friend! Please email for an application.

Story
Meet Bunson, the Queensland Heeler! Bunson came to the Shelter with some other dogs after their previous guardian was unable to continue caring for them. Bunson was a working dog in a ranch with a couple of other dogs. He had been around a variety of farm animals and may thrive as a working dog in his next home. He has been outdoors with other dogs (another herding breed and a Pyrenees) and does not have experience indoors. A companion animal home may be in his future but adopters may need to be patient in Bunson’s transition to indoor living with things like potty training and other “house rules”. Staff have observed that Bunson has been tied in his kennel and calm when all is quiet. He has been loyal and attentive. Bunson will join in on barking at other dogs who are barking at him but otherwise has been quiet. Bunson has played well with some but has been described as “bossy” with others. Every dog is an individual and has preferences in socialization. Bunson may make friends with some dogs and not others. Any resident dogs in the home are recommended to meet prior to adoption. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Meet Pop Chip! This petite cattle dog came to the Shelter as a stray, so we do not know much about his life before the Shelter. He has been engaging and soft since his arrival, often approaching people and leaning in for pets and attention. He walks nicely on leash and would make a great adventure buddy. Pop Chip has met some dogs at the Shelter since his arrival. He played off leash with an adolescent female named Star and did well. Any resident dogs in the home should meet prior to adoption. Story
Meet Saxon, the mixed breed. We suspect Saxon is a mix of breeds but have him listed as a cattle dog mix. Saxon arrived to the Shelter with his, seemingly, brother Motley as strays. We do not know about their lives before the Shelter. Although they arrived together, we are looking for separate adoptive homes for them. Staff have observed that Saxon walks nicely on leash and is attentive. He has met Maya, a female German Shepherd, and enjoyed playing with her. A dog friend in the home may be a match, especially if they’d want to play with Saxon. We’d recommend any resident dogs meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. We do not have a history of Saxon with children or cats.
