Story
Meet Toast! She is great with other dogs and even participates in a doggie day care program. She was teased by children in her prior home so a home without kids would be best for our little Toasty. She's a great little play buddy and will make a loving companion for someone. Toast is bonded with our standard poodle, Zeppelin and we would love to keep them together. Email us at bombshellbullies@hotmail.com to see if Toast and Zeppelin would be a good match for you!

Story
The number one thing I will tell you about this dog is he is extremely intelligent. He has integrated with the other dogs well. He definitely is self-assured with them and understands how to communicate with other dogs. There is no doubt in my mind that this dog is extremely loyal. Whoever gets to adopt him will have a dog that will love them to the end of the Earth. He also clearly thrives on getting instructions and having a job. So whoever adopts him will want to ensure that he is receiving training and direction on a consistent basis. We believe he is a purebred red healer. I would encourage you to read about the breed. They are fascinating dogs and make fabulous family members for the right homes. Colt would do very well in a home with a lot of room to run and active family that is also dog savvy. A family that appreciates a working breed dog would be essential. Being his breed, we would recommend he not be adopted into a home with small children. But the most important is a dog savvy family.Did I mention that he is stunningly, handsome? While that is the least important, it certainly is nice. He’s extremely photogenic and is a great size, weighing in at around 50 pounds. He walks well on leash and likes car rides._________________________________________________________________________Adoption Donation for Colt is $ 525.00WANT TO MEET ColtThe first step would be for you to go to our website at www.aear.org and then to the “Adopting a Pet” page to read about our Adoption Process which will answer many of your questions and then to fill out an Adoption Application. Also, please visit our very active Facebook Page for updates on Colt and our other adoptable pets with AEAR - www.facebook.com/aear.orgAll our animals available for adoption are living in foster homes. Story
Meet Gatsby! This handsome 1-year-old male Cattle Dog is full of potential and ready for his next big adventure — a forever home! Gatsby came to us from out of state, and he's now looking for a family who understands the needs of his smart, energetic breed. Gatsby is a beautiful boy with a sharp mind and a loving heart. Like many Cattle Dogs, he thrives on activity and purpose. He’ll do best in a home where he can get plenty of exercise, mental stimulation, and positive engagement. Whether it’s hiking, agility, or learning new tricks, Gatsby is eager to be your active companion. If you’re looking for a loyal partner who will keep you on your toes and fill your days with joy, Gatsby might be the perfect fit. Could you be the one to give this sweet boy the life he deserves? From his foster: "Gatsby is a bright, loyal, and endlessly curious 1-year-old pup who’s made incredible progress in just a short time! Like many working breeds, he has a lot of energy, but with routine, structure, and training, he’s thriving. He’s really proud of himself when he gets things right, and it’s a joy to watch him light up and nail it! He is such a smart boy and is soaking up his training—nailing basic commands & recall, improving on leash daily, and gaining confidence with every new experience. In true Cattle Dog fashion, he's observant and highly attuned to his environment, and he's learning how to focus that instinct in healthy, productive ways. He can be alert and vocal when strangers approach, but we're helping him learn when to bark and when to relax. He loves mental enrichment (puzzle toys, frozen treats, and tug-of-war are favorites), clear communication, and praise! Gatsby is house trained and communicative. He’ll let you know when he needs to go out or when his water bowl is running low. He does great in the car and settles in easily for rides. We’re working on building his confidence when left home alone through gradual departures and a consistent routine. He can be vocal at first, but relaxes pretty quickly. While he handles city walks well, Gatsby really comes alive when he has a yard or nature to explore - this is where you really see his working breed instincts shine. He gets along well with my small dog and he’d also likely thrive with a confident, playful dog his size to show him the ropes. He appreciates a proper introduction to both dogs and humans (treats are the fastest way to his heart). And if you're wondering—yes, Gatsby turns heads! We get stopped daily by people asking what breed he is and commenting on his handsome look. Gatsby is a truly special dog with endless potential. He’s a total sweetheart at heart—a loyal shadow who loves to curl up at my feet and have my attention. With a little time, a lot of love, and continued support (training, agility classes, outdoor time), he's going to be the most loyal companion you could ask for!"

Story
Alpha and Omega are at our shelter. Please submit an application from our website or just come in to meet them during open hours! Scroll through each of their pictures to see their cute videos! Alpha and Omega have been here before. Back in 2022, they were young pups (then known as Zach and Cody!) who spent a few weeks at our shelter. Our staff loved them then, just as we do now! These boys were adopted into a nice home together, but sadly their adopter passed away suddenly and recently, and Alpha and Omega were left without a home. They wound up with Northbrook Animal Control, who thankfully traced their microchips back to us, and reached out. As you can see from their videos, the boys have adjusted very well to their new reality. They are a testament to the resilience of dogs! We are sure the transition has been easier because they have each other, just as they always have. Though littermates can have their share of issues when kept together for so long (you may have heard of "Littermate Syndrome"), these two are *such* well-adjusted and happy pups! While some bonded pairs of dogs can have an "us vs the world" mentality, these two are happy to socialize with all of the dogs and vacillate between co-existing and throwing play bows during play group, which is just so adorable to see! And of course, Alpha and Omega each have their own unique personalities! While we were not initially fans of these names (and some of us still call them Zach and Cody!), we can see why their adopter named them as such: Alpha is bigger in size and is the more independent and serious of the two, while Omega has that "I'm just happy to be here" energy and is always wagging, wiggling, joyful and smiling! Alpha doesn't beg for attention but he likes to come right beside you and present his hind quarters for scratching, which is his favorite thing! Omega has the fluffy, wavy coat of an un-sheared sheep and he loves pets and full body scratches! There are SO many great things about these two in particular, and about dogs their age in general! Alpha and Omega have been living in a home the last few years and that shows, by which we mean they are housebroken, not destructive, social, polite, well-mannered, and overall so easy-peasy! They were so good for their baths, nail trims, and vet exams. Best of all, these two walk GREAT on a leash together. Walking both of these boys is way easier than walking one of some our other dogs, ha. We love that they still have some playfulness, too. Not just with the other dogs, but with each other and especially with their stuffies! They love a new stuffy, and get so excited when we toss them a new one. They never rip them up, just carry them around and put them in their beds. We know that getting one larger dog adopted is a challenge these days, let alone two. And while we are not sure that they are totally bonded, meaning neither of them will panic if the other is out of sight, we feel we owe it to them for now to try to keep them together. We hope that someone is out there and willing to take on two amazing pups who are going to ease into their new lives so seamlessly. ***We are open to a foster or a foster to adopt arrangement for these boys! Anything to get them back in a home where they belong! Their adoption fee is $300. They are neutered, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.

Juanita is living in a foster home! Complete an application on our website and email dogs@heartlandanimalshelter.org to see if you're a match! Juanita is a 4-year-old mixed breed sweetheart with a true comeback story. She made her way to us from Texas at the end of January in pretty rough shape, battling Heartworm and clearly having had a tough past. But with time, care, and love in her foster home, Juanita has absolutely blossomed into the wonderful dog she was always meant to be! Today, Juanita is thriving! She’s fully housebroken and can be trusted to free roam the home for several hours while you’re away. She enjoys getting out for walks and exploring the world at her own pace, but she’s just as happy curling up on the couch for some quiet cuddle time. Juanita also does well with her foster cat sibling. She can be a little nervous when meeting new people, but give her a little patience and kindness, and you’ll quickly see her affectionate, loving personality shine through. Her foster mom absolutely adores her! She has fostered many dogs for us, but about Juanita she says, "I just love her." It is hard not to fall for a dog that took some time to open up, and has done a full 180 right before your eyes! Here is what she had to share, "Juanita thinks I'm her best friend. It took her a few weeks to relax and get comfortable with me and then suddenly it was like someone flipped a switch and we became besties! Juanita loves going for walks, she will never say no to spending time walking around the neighborhood. As much as she likes a walk, she is also content on the couch or her dog bed binge watching Hawaii 5 O on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Juanita is one of those dogs who gives 'grateful to be alive and loved vibes'." Juanita will be a wonderful companion for someone looking for a loyal best friend! Juanita's adoption fee is $300. She is spayed and up-to-date on vaccines. Juanita was treated for Heartworm. She will just need a quick retest at the adopter's vet 6-9 months post-treatment to make sure that she is Heartworm-free.

Story
***Is afraid of men**** Penny Lane is a sweet and sensitive Sheltie/Mini Aussie mix estimated to be around 1.5 years old based on her teeth. She’s the perfect mix of playful, cuddly, and well-mannered! She loves chew toys, bones, and soft squeaky toys, and she’s happiest curled up in her dog bed or tucked into her kennel at bedtime like the good girl she is. Penny Lane walks wonderfully on a leash, enjoys being brushed, and even knows how to sit back on her hind legs to beg for treats 🥹 She isn’t a big barker, but she will let you know if something seems off, making her a great little alert dog. One of her funniest quirks? She absolutely LOVES shredding tissues 😆 Penny Lane is very submissive and sensitive by nature. She does not respond well to harsh correction and is especially fearful of men after hearing a neighboring man yell at dogs. When scared, she tucks her tail and tries to hide. Because of this, she’ll need a patient, gentle home that will help her continue building confidence and feeling safe. If you’re looking for a loyal companion with a soft heart and adorable personality, Penny Lane may be your perfect match. Email us for more information on Penny Lane at conniesk9rescue@gmail.com
