Story
Meet Sasha! A lively five-and-a-half-year-old Australian Shepherd currently in Alexandria, VA, whose tricolor coat and bright spirit make every day feel like an outdoor adventure. Sasha is an energetic girl who lights up at the sight of a bouncing ball, a flying rope toy, or an open path for a long walk! With her sharp mind and eagerness to learn, she already knows sit, lie down, heel, stay, and come, and she enjoys practicing with positive reinforcement and engaging training games. True to her herding roots, Sasha can become very excited by movement, sometimes chasing runners, bicycles, or playful kids, and she is still learning how to channel that enthusiasm in calmer ways. She has shown occasional herding-related nipping during these moments of excitement, with a few instances where skin was lightly broken without injury, reflecting her instinct to guide movement rather than harm. With consistent positive reinforcement and guidance, she continues to make progress. Sasha would thrive with an experienced pet parent who understands active breeds and can provide daily exercise, structure, and continued training support. In a fenced yard or secure space, she shines as a joyful playmate who loves to run, fetch, and explore! Sasha is friendly with people of all ages and often greets newcomers with enthusiastic curiosity, though she may jump up in excitement as she says hello. She has shared gentle moments with children who are learning how to interact with dogs, especially after a good walk or game of catch. Around other dogs, she can be selective and appreciates slow, respectful introductions, while a home without cats or fast moving small animals may help her feel more comfortable. Sasha is also quite the porch commentator, happily keeping an eye on passing neighbors and announcing their arrival with a confident bark. After a full day, she shows her affectionate side by staying close and even offering sweet grooming kisses to her favorite humans. Sasha needs a caring environment where her energy, intelligence, and loving nature can shine. Could this playful, loyal girl be the one who brings new adventures and joyful routines into your world? She is ready to begin her next chapter! If you are ready for an active, devoted companion who will fill your days with movement and connection, reach out to adopt@joyfulpets.com to learn more about welcoming Sasha into your life! Story
Meet Poppy! A spirited seven-year-old Miniature Australian Shepherd currently in Arlington, VA, whose bright eyes and tricolor coat capture her joyful, thoughtful nature. This clever girl brings a wonderful balance of fun and calm, happily matching her day to a rhythm of one good walk, a lively game of fetch or frisbee, and some creative time with frozen treats! Poppy is wonderfully people-focused and greets everyone like a fast friend. She thrives on connection, learning, and play, and she proudly shows off an impressive list of commands including sit, stay, spin, roll over, and her charming “look at me” cue. She even earned her Good Citizenship certificate, and her quick mind means she would shine in agility or advanced training classes built on positive reinforcement. At home, Poppy enjoys lounging freely, occasionally digging her signature shallow “foxholes” near the house where she can relax and watch the world go by. She is house-trained, comfortable being left alone, and appreciates cozy routines like riding safely in her canvas crate during car trips. Storms can make her uneasy, so she seeks comfort in a quiet basement space. Poppy would do well in an adult-only loving home with experienced pet parents who understand resource guarding and can confidently manage situations involving dropped food or high-value items. In these specific situations, she may growl or snap, and she has bitten once. She does not guard her meals, toys, or treats and often invites her humans to help her problem-solve with treat puzzles. She is not compatible with cats and would need thoughtful guidance and professional support if living with another dog. She also requires ongoing joint support and daily supplements, along with medication for mild allergies, all of which she handles easily as part of her routine. Poppy’s world is full of frisbees, soccer games, learning moments, and loyal companionship. She is ready to share that world with a family who understands her needs and celebrates her brilliance. Could Poppy be the bright, devoted companion you’ve been hoping to welcome into your life? To learn more, reach out to adopt@joyfulpets.com! Content Notice: This pet is represented by Joyful Pets. Story
**Meet Dean — a Gentle, Shy Soul Looking for His Perfect Home (with Jackie!)** Dean is a very shy but incredibly sweet boy who just needs a little time and patience to show you his true heart. Once he bonds with you, he becomes your devoted shadow—quietly loyal, deeply affectionate, and happiest right by your side. Dean shares a special, unbreakable bond with his best friend Jackie, and the two of them must be adopted together. Their connection gives Dean confidence, comfort, and joy, and they truly thrive as a pair. Leash walks are one of Dean’s favorite things—he’s calm, easy to handle, and enjoys exploring the world at a gentle pace. However, he *can* jump a 4-foot fence, so he will need a secure yard with a taller fence or supervised outdoor time to keep him safe. Dean and Jackie are looking for a patient, loving home that will give them the time and reassurance they need to settle in. With understanding and consistency, Dean will blossom into the loyal, affectionate companion he’s meant to be. If you’re ready to open your heart to a sweet, sensitive boy and his best friend, Dean and Jackie are waiting to meet you.

Story
Smart and intelligent are the words to describe our lovely gal Lyra. She is an Australian Shepherd mix at around 5 months old and weighing around 32 pounds. Looking forward, she will have growing to do to reach her full-grown weight and our best guess is that she will be a large gal over somewhere over 60 pounds. Time will tell for sure, but we certainly do not need time to know this girl is a sweetheart. She comes into rescue from a hoarding situation and there have been many changes in her life. She is making great progress and learning to trust people; however, she may be shy in a new environment so slow introductions will be the key until she has time to adjust. Lyra does well with other dogs and older children but prefers a feline free home. She is learning her skill set of house, crate and leash training. She aims to please and is bright and enthusiastic. She will put in her best effort to learn her skills and make her family proud of her. Lyra has much to learn when it comes to living the good life. We know she will ease into it and then submerse herself in all the love and attention offered to her. She did not know what she was missing until now. She is more than ready to turn the page to the next chapter of her life. * When considering adoption, keep in mind that dogs thrive on structure and routine. They adjust much better when their owners are committed to providing consistency and stability. The adoption fee for Lyra is $500. That includes the cost of spaying/neutering, up to date vaccinations, foster care, rescue and transportation fees. To get the ball rolling, head over to our Adoption Application and submit your application today. A Dog Star representative will contact you within 24 hours. To speed up the process, contact your vet and give them permission to speak with us.If you do not get a response within 24 hours, check your spam folder.May 14, 2026, 6:29 am

Story
Bailey is a high energy sweetheart who needs more time than our family is currently able to provide and it breaks our hearts but we know she needs and deserves more. We are unsure of her full breed, but she is said to be an Aussie mix and she definitely has that Aussie energy. She is good with other dogs and loves to play, she is house trained and crate trained. Bailey needs some work on a leash but is very smart and can learn with time and effort. Bailey loves cuddles and kisses and is good with kids but would be better with older kids because we have toddlers and she knocks them over and is just too much energy for them. A family with older kids would adore her. She is up to date on shots and spayed. She needs family that can spend time with her and expel that energy. She would be amazing at agility if someone were to get her into that. All in all she is still a puppy with puppy traits that need work but the willingness to learn is there with the right family.
