Story
Kopper is a young, happy, affectionate, handsome, full-blooded male Australian Shepherd who is now looking for his forever home. He is 2 years old, weighs 34 lbs., and has a soft, reddish-brown liver colored coat.
Kopper is neutered and fully vetted. Kopper didn't have a good beginning in life, but has proved that he is willing and able to move to his new home after having three months of special foster care.
Kopper is housebroken but is still learning house manners. He loves his crate and sleeps in it at night and while he's home alone. He is very smart and learns quickly. He knows a few basic commands, but will need continued training for additional basic obedience.
He sometimes softly nips and mouths hands (like herders do) and sometimes jumps up (but learning not to). He will pull on a leash and rides in a crate in the car. He loves to go!
Kopper is very shy with new people, but warms up with slow introductions and patience. He loves to stay close to his people, to be in a lap, snuggle and get belly rubs! Kopper is very playful and friendly with most other dogs, but needs slow introductions. He loves attention and loves to be brushed!
Kopper is a high energy youngster that loves to run, play and roughhouse with his foster dog siblings and to play fetch with his people. He enjoys the great outdoors going for hikes in the woods and neighborhood walks. Kopper has a high prey drive around squirrels and rabbits, so will probably not be good around cats or other small animals.
The best home for Kopper will be with a calm, caring, loving, patient family that is home a lot, has time, knowledge, and experience with a herding breed dog. He is used to running in a fenced yard in his previous home and his current foster home, so a fenced yard is preferred. A young, playful, confident dog buddy to play with and help learn from would be great for Kopper as well. Any children in the home should be at least 12 years old and understand how to interact with a herding breed dog. Kopper will need extra time, training, patience and understanding as he goes forward in his new home. Kopper is being fostered in Fort Mill, SC, near the Charlotte, NC metro area.
