Moto is a sweet, low-riding pup with adorable basset hound legs and a heart full of love. He gets along great with other dogs and loves to follow his foster sibling around the yard—he’s so short, he can even stroll right under her belly! Moto approaches every day with joyful enthusiasm, whether it’s playing with the resident dog, going for walks around the neighborhood, or snuggling on the couch with his nose resting on his foster’s shoulder. During the day, Moto is content to relax on his dog bed nearby while his foster works from home. He’s crate-trained, sleeps peacefully through the night, and does great when left alone, either in the crate or without it. He knows the basic commands of “sit” and “down” and walks well on a leash with occasional reminders to slow down, though he does find squirrels very exciting. Once he gets to know you, Moto’s expressive nature shines—his ears and voice tell you everything he’s feeling. His ears perk straight up when he’s excited, lay back on his head to listen when he walks ahead, and flop to the sides when he’s relaxed. He gives wide, squeaky yawns in the morning, may whine if he’s feeling lonely, yips excitement when it is time for a walk, and grunts when he is uncertain. He also has a deep, loud bark when he is alarmed or to alert that he needs to go out. That isn’t frequent, but might not be ideal for apartment living. Moto is recovering from a limp, and his short legs make stairs a bit of a challenge. He manages the shorter porch steps with a little help but avoids long flights of stairs. Bellamy #975 Age: 7.5 years old Color & Breed: Tricolor Basset Gender: Neutered Male Weight: 60 pounds Bellamy and Cornelius are a bonded pair of basset males that came to MNBR when their family could no longer afford their medical care or basic necessities. Cornelius was in urgent need of bladder stone removal surgery and Bellamy needed a dental and has a leg that’s been swollen for months. Both boys were seen at our vet on 1/28 and got everything they needed. Nelly had one large, one medium, and several small stones removed from his bladder. He will need to be on a prescription diet going forward and should be checked regularly for stones. Belly was diagnosed with a hygroma which is more annoying than anything else and will hopefully subside with time. He’s a fast learner, and with a little more TLC I have no doubt he will grow into an amazing dog!As a puppy, Finch is learning many important life skills right now. One area we’re working on that isn’t listed in the ‘training section’ above is functional relaxation. Functional relaxation means Finch is learning how to be comfortable and settled on his own. Most of the time, I don’t allow him to follow me from room to room, and he doesn’t have constant access to my lap. Instead, he’s rewarded for relaxing in his dog bed or nearby while I go about my day. We still spend plenty of time together (and yes, he absolutely does get snuggle time!), but he’s also learning that being independent and relaxed is safe and rewarding. This is a very normal and healthy part of puppy development and training, and this sets him up for success as an adult dog by helping prevent clinginess and separation anxiety. He is awesome & doing great!
