Story
Deric & Little Kane (approximately 3 month-old brothers) were abandoned by their owner in a walnut grove in Wasco, CA because they did not want to make the drive to turn them over to a rescue.  They literally posted a picture with GPS coordinates and basically said, "Here's where they are, good luck."  Fortunately, they were found and are currently living their best lives in a very loving foster home.   Little Kane, who strongly resembles a Beagle, is more reserved and likes to stand back and watch when there's a lot of activity. They both get along well with large and small dogs as well as cats and are extremely playful with each other and other dogs as well .  Because of their past, they are a little "stand offish" and require a home (separately or together) that will provide love, support, and patience.  When they first arrived, if you tried to touch them at all, they would run away and cry and pee.  Little by little, they have come out of their shells and will happily submit to head scratches as long as you don't try to grab or hold them, but that will improve with time.  Puppy: up to 1 yr $450.00 Each of our dogs are fully vaccinated to include Bordetella, DHPP, DHLPP and Rabies. We deworm each dog and chip. Lastly, we spay or neuter each of our dogs. Our adoption process includes an initial conversation about the dog to see if the dog is a good match or if another dog could be a more suitable match. We also will complete a home visit. It should be noted that our adoption counselors know the dogs and can best guide any possible adopter with a suitable match. Please visit https://www.calpaws.org/available-dogs for the adoption application! We are always in need of experienced fosters for the amount of dogs we have coming in. Being a foster is such a rewarding experience. If you are interested please review https://www.calpaws.org/fostering ##1735176##

Story
All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated, and microchipped.  * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. Our adoption fees vary. Each biography will specifically list the adoption fee. This dog will be at a meet and greet event on Saturday, June 3rd unless he/she is adopted prior to the event with a set up home. The event is from 12 pm to 3 pm at Palo Alto's Pet Food Express. Those interested in meeting the dog can come out to our meet and greet event. We no longer do application approval onsite. Anyone adopting has been previously approved and set up to meet prior to the event. Adoption fee: $600 Cookie is a 3-4 year old Beagle/Chi type mix who is the mom of the Girl Scout Cookie puppies. She weighs 10 lbs. Mama and babies were left at a shelter together and DPS swooped in to scoop them up. Mama was finished with her nursing duties and got to decompress in foster without baby cookies climbing all over her. Here is the report from her fosters! Cookie normally wakes up at 8am on the weekdays and 10am on the weekends. She’s flexible on the wake-up time and will not wake you up. I’ve been taking her out for brief walks since she’s newly spayed. Within 5 minutes she will be pee and poop, and can go back in the house. I put breakfast out for her, and she’ll slowly eat throughout the day. During the day, I work from home, so she’ll have free reign of the house, but she’ll usually like to stay in her kennel because that’s where her bed is. Around 12pm – 2pm, I’ll take her out to pee. At around 5pm – 7pm, I will take her out for another brief walk. She can walk for longer, and prior to being spayed, she has walked for 15 minutes and does not pull. She’ll go to bed when I’m ready to go to bed.   Cookie is shy and quiet. She’s hesitant when meeting new people and dogs, so she’ll have her tail between her legs, but she never barks or bites. She’s a Velcro dog and will follow me from room to room a lot of the time, but occasionally wander off on her own and explore. She is a lap dog but is also content just laying right next to you.   Cookie appears to have been potty pad trained before coming to DPS; we are working on training her to go outdoors instead. She is crate trained and loves to curl up in her crate when she's ready for a nap.   Cookie is a great companion and the perfect low key little lap dog. She's easy to care for and won't ask for much. She's not a barker or a chewer. She'd be a great walking buddy but is also fine with short potty breaks. She is fine coexisting with dogs of all sizes. Though she hasn't met a cat while in our care, we expect that she would likely be fine with them. She's a mild-mannered sort of gal.   Cookie is best suited to a home with prior experience with dogs who are on the shy side. She is an option for kids over the age of 6.  June 9, 2023, 3:09 pm

Our adoption fees vary. Each biography will specifically list the adoption fee.Adoption fee: $250 Ol' Red is an 8 year old mystery mutt (he kinda looks like an oversized Beagle crossed with a few other breeds) who weighs about 50 lbs. He was found as a stray and ended up in an overcrowded shelter. He had an injured eye when he arrived and the vet determined that it was too bad to repair, so it was removed, but being a pirate doesn't bother this boy at all! He is a total sweetheart. He was a shelter staff favorite and they contacted DPS to ask us to get him out of his tiny kennel and into a foster home. When our team went in to meet him, he was a bit timid, but within ten minutes he was rolling over and begging them for belly rubs! Here is the report from his foster home. Wow- what a sweet boy! Red is incredibly friendly and loving, and he has been that way since he arrived. The biggest change is in his confidence and what he will do more comfortably on his own over time. For instance, he didn’t finish his meals at first and would run to go back inside when we went out. Now he happily finishes all meals, sits to ask for treats with the other dogs, and enjoys time outside. It's only taken him about a week to settle in, and now it's like he's part of our pack! (Check out the photo of him with his foster siblings- he adores them!)   He is social and prefers to be in the same room as people and dogs but isn’t necessarily “velcro” or needy/clingy. He likes to sleep on the couch next to you and will cuddle/rest his head on your lap.   We wake up just before 7 am, the dogs go out to potty in the yard, and everyone has breakfast after shaking out the cobwebs. Red hangs out in the house with our 3 dogs during the day, and he’s a happy and content friend to them all. They go out again a few times for potty and walkabouts in the yard. We walk in the evening before dinner, and we go out again before bedtime. He is welcome to sleep in our bedroom (and bed!) but seems nervous to enter the room- probably because it’s darker and less open. He seems to prefer to sleep on the couch with a blanket, and sleeps well through the night.   We have 3 dogs (1 medium perfect senior dog and 2 large dogs) and 2 cats. Red loves them all! He and our similarly sized dog Miles have become fast friends, and they stay together most of the day. Red copies what Miles does and has learned cues and to sit from him.   Red likes to do whatever we or the dogs are doing. He keeps up with our younger dog but hasn’t really been interested in playing with balls or toys. He has enjoyed no-hide chews. He likes to lounge next to us on the couch or in a dog bed. He’s a great cuddler but is not clingy.   Red walks well on a leash but does get nervous with unfamiliar sounds/surroundings and can pull. This already has improved in a short time and continues to improve with each walk as Red grows in confidence. He is not reactive and does not bark.   Red has not had any accidents in the house. We go out often (generally at least every 4 hours or so) as we have our own 15 year old dog at home. He is not a digger, a chewer, or a barker.   He is such a catch! Red is exceptionally sweet and surprisingly gentle. He is so smart and learns very quickly to adapt to his environment. It may make him a bit shy, but his vision has never limited his activities.   Ol' Red is an option for almost any type of home with some prior dog experience. He would love to go to a home with another dog, and cats are an option for him too. He is an option for kids over the age of 5.    June 9, 2023, 3:09 pm

Our adoption fees vary. Each biography will specifically list the adoption fee.Adoption fee: $800 Tempest is a 7 month old Beagle who was surrendered to our rescue when her owners could no longer care for her. She is exactly what you would expect from a Beagle puppy: goofy and silly, energetic and full of life! She's ready to be your hiking buddy and go on all the adventures with you. Here is the report from her foster home! Tempest sleeps through the night in her crate and wakes up around 7am. We go out to the yard first thing for potty time and then a round of fetch, followed by a nice walk. She loves to go on walks but hasn't really had much prior leash training, so she does tend to pull when she gets excited. Everything is new and exciting to her- so many things to see and smell! Her adopters will want to work on loose-leash walking training with her. Dinner at our house is at 6 pm, and we usually take another walk afterwards, followed by cuddle time while watching TV. Bedtime is around 10:30 pm. Tempest likes to jump on the bed rather than go in her crate, and I am sure she would love to sleep with me if I let her!  Whether I’m on the computer or watching TV, Tempest loves to show her affection and is very sweet. She seems to be house trained and crate trained and uses doggie doors. My dog Rueben is small compared to Tempest’s strength and agility but Tempest is gentle with Rueben, and loves to play with him. Tempest does love toys and often plays by herself tossing the ball with her mouth and chasing it. She spends a lot of down time chewing on her toys. Tempest barks when Rueben barks and howls when she hears sirens. She has shown signs of guarding her toys from my dog, so if she goes to a home with another dog, adopters will want to work on this challenge with a trainer. Tempest is a high energy dog and would do well in a home with an active owner. She is social and sweet, and people will love meeting her everywhere you take her! Tempest is only an option for a home that has owned a dog in the last 5 years. If there are children in the home, they should be over the age of 5.June 9, 2023, 3:09 pm

For those who follow our rescue closely, she is the mama of the Sausage puppies, who were all adopted out a few weeks ago! She can be a bit shy with new people and in new situations, but she's a lover girl at heart. Here is the report from her foster home! Salchicha has come so far in the short time that I’ve had her! On day one, she was timid and shy and reluctant to engage. Within a few hours she trusted me and now she’s my little shadow, always at my side. She always wants to cuddle and get belly rubs. In the last day or two, she’s started to show some interest in toys. She doesn’t seem to know what to do with them but she gets excited and curious. I think once she gets settled in her forever home she will truly blossom!   On weekdays, we wake up around 6:30 and she’s happy to cuddle in the AM. Then we are out for our first morning walk, followed by breakfast and a later-morning walk. She is still only partially potty-trained (although getting better every day!) so, I’ve found that shorter, more frequent walks are best. When we are home, she is cuddled up next to me. When I am not home, she stays in my spare room, lounging/sleeping (sometimes a little whining but getting better) as best as I can tell from my doggy camera. We have an afternoon walk, dinner, more lounging and an evening walk. Once I start turning off the lights, she knows its bedtime and jumps up on the bed for the night. She sleeps in bed with me all curled up.   Salchicha has bursts of energy but she’s mostly happy to lounge. She is always happy when I grab the leash and she knows that we are going out. She’s walking next to me or in front of me, instead of behind me. We haven’t gone on long walks but we are starting to increase the duration now that she is enjoying it more. She doesn’t seem interested in birds or squirrels. Salchicha is not a barker at all. Yesterday, for the very first time, she let out one singular bark when she got near a cat. Other than that, she never barks.   I have brought Salchicha to work with me the past couple of days. Everyone loves her! She is so timid but she is fine meeting lots of people! She’ll let anyone hold her. I love the way she rolls over for belly rubs all the time! She’s such a sweetie!   Salchicha is best suited to a home with prior dog experience. She's still a young gal and will need a home that will continue her socialization and help her come out of her shell. She has so much potential! She is an option for kids over the age of 7; younger ones may scare her a bit.June 9, 2023, 3:09 pm
