Leo is an adult neutered male Beagle who will be with the Path to Home Program for 8 weeks at the Orleans Correctional Facility. He will be ready for adoption upon completion of the program - approximately early November. Volunteers For Animals and Orleans Correctional Facility have developed a Dog Training & Fostering Program within the prison that will provide socialization and basic obedience training for the dogs before being adopted. Volunteers For Animals will be pulling dogs from high kill shelters and locally who may be in need of behavioral support to become more adoptable. The dogs will then be transported to Orleans Correctional Facility where they will live with selected inmates who will care for them 24 hours per day for approximately 8 weeks. Each dog will have a crate, bedding, leash, collar, training treats, and food provided by Volunteers For Animals. A certified dog trainer will provide weekly training classes for the dogs and the inmates. The inmates will then work daily to reinforce the formal training with the dogs. Adoption Procedures The adoption process includes an application that is completed by the potential owner. If there are multiple applications on the same animal, the animal will go to the best home for that particular animal - not necessarily the first application. Fees for the Path to Home animals are $200 per animal which needs to be cash or a check - NO CREDIT CARDS. All of the dogs are current on vaccines, heart worm tested and spayed/neutered. If you would like to be considered for any of the Path to Home dogs, please email us. Please do not call the Shelter regarding Path to Home animals - they do not have any information. If you would like more information, please Contact Us. Here is the adoption process: To adopt an animal you must complete an application and be approved. There is a $100 fee for any county animal which needs to be cash or a check - NO CREDIT CARDS. If the animal is not spayed or neutered, there is a $35 deposit which will be returned upon proof of surgery. All dogs must be licensed before leaving the Shelter. Wilson is about 8 months old, 32 pounds, and apparently decided he was done waiting around to be rescued...so he just showed up at one of our rescuer’s houses. We don’t know exactly how Wilson ended up there. Most likely he was dumped nearby, but one day there he was — and Wilson basically said, “Hi! I live here now!” And honestly, he fit right in! Wilson happily joined the crew at his foster home and quickly made himself part of the family. He LOVES other dogs, loves to play and seems to think every new friend, human or canine, is someone he’s been waiting his whole life to meet. He is just a genuinely happy, social, fun-loving puppy. And Wilson has another favorite activity... SWIMMING! This boy loves the water! So if you’re looking for a buddy for summer adventures, trips to the lake, playing in the yard or just generally having a good time, Wilson is ready to volunteer. At only 8 months old, he still has plenty of puppy silliness and growing up to do, but he has such a friendly, go-with-the-flow personality. Considering he basically wandered into rescue and immediately thought, “Yep, this works for me,” we’d say Wilson is pretty good at making the best of things. Now he just needs to mysteriously show up at his forever home. Wilson will be in NY at the end of October and we would love to have a family waiting for him! Please note: All dogs are rescues so we often do not know their actual breeds but use an educated guess to tell you what they most look like. Our adoption fee is $400 and unless otherwise stated all dogs and puppies have been spayed/neutered, microchipped, 4DX tested (if age appropriate), put on heartworm/flea/tick prevention, age appropriately vaccinated, dewormed, vet checked and flown from Puerto Rico.
