Meet Carrie! She is a sweet, gentle 17lb Bluetick Beagle mix (~3 years old) who adores other friendly dogs and relies on them for confidence. She must go to a quiet, low-traffic, kid-free home with a friendly, confident resident dog to play chase with. Carrie has trauma from her first year of life; she is a flight risk who flees or freezes when startled, and she does not allow human handling yet. However, she is sweet, completely non-aggressive, barks minimally, and loves her crate! She has made progress in my home the past two years, but my household has many children with frequent visitors, so she is often in survival mode. I believe she will make greater progress in a calmer home! When she feels safe, her spunky side shines—she wags her tail, runs fast, and eats treats from your hand. She knows how to go potty outside but can have occasional nervous accidents on soft surfaces. Fully spayed and vaccinated. A $75 adoption fee applies, which will be 100% donated to a local rescue.

Leo is an adult neutered male Beagle who will be with the Path to Home Program for 8 weeks at the Orleans Correctional Facility. He will be ready for adoption upon completion of the program - approximately early November.   Volunteers For Animals and Orleans Correctional Facility have developed a Dog Training & Fostering Program within the prison that will provide socialization and basic obedience training for the dogs before being adopted. Volunteers For Animals will be pulling dogs from high kill shelters and locally who may be in need of behavioral support to become more adoptable. The dogs will then be transported to Orleans Correctional Facility where they will live with selected inmates who will care for them 24 hours per day for approximately 8 weeks. Each dog will have a crate, bedding, leash, collar, training treats, and food provided by Volunteers For Animals. A certified dog trainer will provide weekly training classes for the dogs and the inmates. The inmates will then work daily to reinforce the formal training with the dogs. Adoption Procedures The adoption process includes an application that is completed by the potential owner. If there are multiple applications on the same animal, the animal will go to the best home for that particular animal - not necessarily the first application. Fees for the Path to Home animals are $200 per animal which needs to be cash or a check - NO CREDIT CARDS. All of the dogs are current on vaccines, heart worm tested and spayed/neutered. If you would like to be considered for any of the Path to Home dogs, please email us. Please do not call the Shelter regarding Path to Home animals - they do not have any information. If you would like more information, please Contact Us.  Here is the adoption process:   To adopt an animal you must complete an application and be approved. There is a $100 fee for any county animal which needs to be cash or a check - NO CREDIT CARDS. If the animal is not spayed or neutered, there is a $35 deposit which will be returned upon proof of surgery. All dogs must be licensed before leaving the Shelter. Please note that public offices that issue dog licenses are not open on Saturdays and Sundays.
