Luca is a handsome, smart and affectionate boy! We are thinking Luca is a Boston Terrier mix (maybe purebred?) with a long tail! The first thing you will notice about Luca is how handsome he is, and that he is! :) He is so much more than a handsome face, though, and he is looking for just the right home that will take the time to understand his needs, and accept (and cherish!) him for who he is. Below is Luca's wish list from his new home. Luca's Forever Home Wish List: Cuddles – this guy loves to snuggle up to you on the couch or in your bed! If you are looking for an affectionate companion, Luca is your lil dude! Walks and being outside – Luca is GREAT on a leash; he doesn’t pull or get ahead of you. He loves sniffing around as well as sitting in the sun on the grass or at your feet on the deck. He also LOVES walks on the beach. Long walks also provide an outlet for his anxiety, and he does best when he gets several miles of walks each day. Avoid toys (especially squeaky ones), balls of any kind, and outdoor sporting facilities/activities – When Luca sees any type of ball – football on the beach, soccer match across the park, tennis courts - he goes into a crazed terrier mode that is no fun for anyone and is nearly impossible to break. Instead of using physical toys, he plays “catch” with his people - they stand several yards apart and call him back and forth. A fenced area would be ideal for this. Never confine him in a crate or closed room – Luca has confinement anxiety (different from separation anxiety). We have worked on this A LOT, and found a successful combination of a predictable leaving routine and medications to manage this (we can provide more guidance on these things!). For more than 10 months now, Luca can be reliably left alone with no issues for 6-8 hours at a time! Offer reassurance and calm during storms, fireworks, loud noises – When stressed/anxious, Luca's eyes will widen, he will pant and pace, and possibly cry. We have identified a set of several tools that reliably help soothe him (like rubbing his ears, cuddling, and medications) and make this anxiety manageable for everyone. Cats are cool; dogs are doubtful - Luca has not be integrated with another dog in years; his last experience with a dog had squeaky toys involved and things did not end well. While he might enjoy coexisting with another dog, since he cannot have access to toys, the most appropriate placement for him is a dog-free home. He is calm when he sees other dogs at a 10-ft. distance or more, and can likely have dogs as walking buddies (no offleash/play time). Luca is COOL with cats; watch a short clip of him with his feline summer housemate here. Luca is a sweet, happy boy who just wants a loving home and family who can make his dream home a reality. Can you make his wish come true? Fill out an application today and let him know that you'd love to have him join your family! Luca's Backstory (fka Doug): He was surrendered by his owner along with his sister, Debra, in 2020. Luca was placed by SOS into a very loving and committed Rhode Island home; life has thrown them many curve balls, however, and their situation has changed so drastically that they are no longer able to provide him with the life they want him to have. They are heartbroken, but we are looking for a new home for Luca. During his time in this home, we have learned A LOT about him to set him up for success in his next home. He definitely has some quirks, but don't we all? And with Luca, we know him VERY well, so we are prepared to prepare and support his next home through the transition period. An adoption donation is required for each adoption; please see HERE for more information about this. To apply for Luca, fill out an adoption application on our website: www.sosarl.org/aa/ *Additional info you should know - For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label. Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption. There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor. September 21, 2023, 8:40 pm
