Story
ABOUT ZEUS Zeus came to HAP in July after his owner passed away. At 7 years old, adjusting to shelter life after living in a loving home has been difficult for him. Shortly after his arrival, Zeus began experiencing concerning symptoms, including vomiting, loss of appetite, and bloody stool. He was referred to Wilmington Animal Hospital for further evaluation and advanced testing. An ultrasound revealed a mass on his spleen, meaning Zeus will need a splenectomy to ensure he can live a happy, pain-free life. Zeus’s best chance at recovery is in a calm, home environment. While temporary fostering is an option, returning to the shelter after surgery would likely cause him to decline mentally. For this reason, a foster-to-adopt home is truly the best path forward for him! In foster-to-adopt, HAP covers the cost of his care and provides the supplies he may need! Zeus is a laid-back, low-key senior pup who enjoys chewing on bones, soaking up attention, and going for short walks. He is friendly with new people, easily won over by treats, and very affectionate. He enjoys long car rides, showing off his tricks, and melting into his friends for love! Given his age and size, Zeus is a low-maintenance companion who spends most of his day lounging or napping. He’s also comfortable being left alone and is not destructive when unsupervised. Zeus is already house-trained, walks well with a harness, and knows basic commands. Due to Zeus’s condition and behavior around other animals, we are requiring that he be the only pet in a home, so he can recover stress-free! If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. If you are interested in this specific dog but it ends up not being the best fit upon meeting, our adoption counselors will work with you to help find a match! All household members, including children and other dogs, must come along for the meeting to make sure it's a good fit. If a match is made, we encourage same-day adoptions! Our adoption fees include the animals' spay/neuter, microchip, age-appropriate vaccinations and preventatives, fecal testing, heartworm testing, and a small bag of food to get you started.

Story
Adonis and Titan are being fostered in Ohio. They are great with people, but probably best with older children due to their size. They are not good with small dogs or cats. Adonis and Titan are bonded, happy, enthusiastic, athletic, and affectionate 60-pound boxer/bulldog mixes who find joy in being around each other and people – ANY people! They were found starving, weak, and wandering in rural Kentucky, when they took shelter from a rainstorm in the home of a kind woman who opened her door. Adonis is suspected to be around 9-10 years old, blind, and the father of Titan. Titan, closer to 3 years old, was helping his dad survive as best he could and stayed loyally by his side. They found themselves at a county shelter where they quickly became staff favorites and were doted on by staff and volunteers alike. But the shelter was crowded and despite their best efforts, nobody came for the dynamic duo, so BDRA stepped up. Nobody is sure where this bonded father/son pair came from, and it’s hard to guess their story. They seem to be familiar with both the bad and good life. Both have mouths full of broken teeth. In fact, a few teeth just fell out of their mouths in their first days at their foster home. Their doctor thinks they broke their teeth chewing on chains or a metal cage, desperately trying to escape. They have matching scars on their legs where bones protrude, as if they were stuck laying in one position for long periods of time. They are also hand-shy around their heads. They were neglected, abandoned, and mistreated in the past. But they were also beloved house dogs once. They were already house trained, crate trained, and leash trained when they were picked up as strays. They take treats gently and think they are lap dogs. Adonis does a perfect “sit” (Titan is working on it) and Titan has a 100% return rate when playing fetch. They both come when called. They are both quick learners and food motivated. They love EVERY human they meet — and they want to meet every human they see! (People can be intimidated by their looks; they are big, athletic, and strong.) They absolutely LOVE kids, but forget how big they are, so small ones are not recommended. Adonis and Titan are sweet, loving, cuddly, and funny boys. They are big squishy babies who love to cuddle. They absolutely live for “Netflix and cuddle” time. They love to snuggle up on the couch with humans for a movie or TV marathon. Their foster parents always squish their faces because it's impossible not to. They soak up every bit of attention they can get. They live for cuddles, pets, attention, and treats. Adonis gets around very well despite his vision impairment. He occasionally runs into things and often stares at things that aren’t there, but he can go up and down stairs very well and navigates the house. He occasionally runs into things or isn’t sure where the steps start, but he can always find a treat, a cozy bed, or a person. (Or he’ll play Marco Polo and bark to get a response to find the person!) His sense of hearing and smell are perfect. Adonis has decided he is an inside dog and thinks the good life is in the house. Titan LOVES toys and playing fetch. He resource guards his toys because he’s convinced Adonis wants his toys (he usually doesn’t) and will pick a fight, so he has to be supervised with toys. He is very loving and listens to correction very well. He seems to have a strong prey drive, so no cats, bunnies, birds, or other small animals! They have a medium amount of energy. They can be couch potatoes, but they also like to run around and play in the backyard and take walks. But if it’s raining or extra cold, they don’t want anything to do with being outside any longer than necessary, and they are perfectly content to just be lazy all day. Titan has more energy than Adonis, being a younger guy, and will make up his own games in the back yard with his favorite green ball. Adonis prefers to sit on the deck or be inside — wherever the humans are! They love each other very much and get very worried when they are separated. They often sleep in the same (very large) dog bed together. They are very bonded. They have some resource guarding from having to survive on their own, so they must be fed separately and supervised with toys. But they have gotten much better as they have learned resources are unlimited. They are NOT good with cats or small dogs. Since they are SO enthusiastic about showing people their love, they are probably best for bigger kids. (They will knock the little ones down because they have no idea how big they are.) Adonis and Titan have seen hard times, but they don’t hold any grudges. These two are ready to find someone with bully-breed experience who appreciates the bully personality and quirks, and is ready to welcome the sometimes slobbery, but always enthusiastic zest for life that these two are offering! BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.

Story
Fresa is the sweetest and most loving dog I’ve ever had. She’s been my world for the last 5 years. Shes housebroken. She loves to go on walks, she’s a cuddler as well. I can no longer have my sweet girl because I’ve had to move in with family and because I am a new father and we have cats it’s extremely difficult for us to train her with the cats. She can be very good around other dogs as we’ve raised our chihuahua mix cookie around her since she was a puppy. I would love to find my girl a nice home for her golden years.

Story
Hello, my name is: PeachDOB: 04/24/2021Sex/Breed: Spayed female Boxer/Staffie/Pittie Princess mixWeight: 45 lbsFriends: Adults, kidsTraits: Active, loyal, resilient, friendlyRescued From: Found strayPeach`s story is one of resilience and mama bear smarts. Her rescue began as a stray, roaming a peach tree orchard. Kind folks kept watch and when she showed up again looking very pregnant a plan was put into place to try to capture her and bring her to safety. It was winter, and frigid temperatures were forecasted. This street-smart mama eluded capture and ended up giving birth to her puppies in a crawl space under a church, choosing a far corner where heat billowed out of a vent. Temperatures were in the single digits, so the fact that Peach found such a warm spot undoubtedly saved her puppies’ lives. Mama was trapped safely, and her puppies were rescued from the crawl space. The little family was transferred to a foster home and Peach had the opportunity to dote on her puppies without worrying about survival. They were warm, fed, comfortable, and loved. Peach was a wonderful mama and was so grateful for the kindness she was shown by her rescuers and foster family. Now that her puppies are old enough to find homes of their own, mama is ready too! Peach has been a dream companion and doesn’t ask for much. She is an active girl who loves to play and run around outside. She’d love a big fenced in yard at her forever home and boy does she deserve anything she wants after surviving such hardships and keeping her little family alive. Peach is crate trained, seems house trained, and is overall pretty quiet and easy-going. Being with her people is her favorite thing, meeting new human friends with ease. If you are looking for an adventure buddy, Peach is your gal! As long as she is with you, she is happy! The devotion she shows for her people is unwavering. While she loves people, she’s been selective when it comes to other dogs. Given her history and having to fend for herself, we don’t blame her for being untrusting in this way. After everything she has endured, Peach deserves to be the center of her family’s attention as the only pet. Peach does get along with other dogs and likes to socialize with them, especially outdoors! We understand there aren’t many homes looking for a dog that prefers to be a solo companion, but that won’t stop us from searching far and wide for someone who will devote themselves to Peach just as she will to

Story
This friend has just arrived because their owner could no longer keep them. While owners can provide some history on their pets, our medical and behavioral teams will still evaluate them. Dogs that have lived in homes previously typically have some training established, but we cannot guarantee that those behaviors will remain consistent in a new home environment. They are pending interactions with other animals at the shelter until they have been cleared by our vet. Our staff will spend some time getting to know them and we will update their bio with more information as we learn. Story
ABOUT ROSIE Meet Rosie, our lovable 9-year-old pittie mix who adores spending time with people! Rosie’s journey hasn’t been easy, as she was abandoned on our property. We were able to locate her owners, who no longer wished to keep her but shared some of her story with us. Rosie was originally rescued from a dog-fighting ring in Pennsylvania. Due to that experience, Rosie cannot live or interact with other animals and must be the only pet in the home. Despite the challenges she’s faced, Rosie is an absolute sweetheart with every person she meets! You’ll often find a staff member or volunteer snuggled up with Rosie in her kennel, as she’s a total cuddle bug. She already knows basic commands, is house-trained, and walks wonderfully on a leash. Rosie is eager to please and is highly food-motivated, making her quick to learn new things. She absolutely loves spending time outdoors, rolling around in the grass, and sprawling out at your feet for belly rubs. After all she has persevered, Rosie’s ready to find a loving family who will give her the quiet, peaceful life she deserves. **Rosie must be the only pet in a home and should not interact with other animals. Story
ABOUT JACKSON Jackson is a 2-year-old active boy, affectionately known as “Jaxy” by the staff and volunteers. This handsome pup came to HAP after his previous owner could no longer care for him. Understandably, after being surrendered, he is sometimes unsure who to trust and may take some time to warm up. Once he's comfortable, Jaxy is a sweet and loving boy who adores his people! He enjoys being outdoors and loves running around our barnyard, taking in all the exciting sights and smells. He’s very treat-motivated, loves back scratches, and has a blast rolling around with his toys. Jaxy already knows “sit” and “paw,” and he’s currently working on his leash manners. Jackson has participated in our Doggy day Out program too! Here's what our volunteers had to say about him: "Today I took Jackson out and he did really well! We went on a long walk around my neighborhood, which he enjoyed and it tired him out. After that, we stopped at McDonald’s for a happy meal then sat in the car at battery park to people watch (which he also enjoyed). Even though I got him his own happy meal, he decided that wasn’t enough and ate my food as well. The only time Jackson seemed to get worked up is when we were cuddling and a squirrel had the audacity to run by a tree that was way across the field, but don’t worry Jackson scared it off so we were safe once again! He definitely enjoys people watching from afar as opposed to being in the middle of all of the commotion. Jackson is the sweetest boy ever and I absolutely adore him, hopefully this silly boy can find his perfect home!" - Erica "We went for a 2.5 mile walk and hung out at the house. He was great in the car, but is dramatic in every sense of the word outside of the vehicle. On the walk, goofy boy wants to chase every bird and squirrel. He could benefit with some leash work with distractions to work on pulling and reactivity to other animals. At home he was rolling around everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE. He was hilarious, swimming in a dog bed. He knew some commands like paw, sit, down. He definitely has that playful puppy energy. He loves butt scratches and will just fall into you to get them - DRAMATIC. All in all he was super sweet, super goofy, and super strong. I hope he will find a home, I do feel like he will be a great dog for someone." - Taylor *Jackson is seeking a home as your only pet!
