Story
ABOUT ZEUS Zeus came to HAP in July after his owner passed away. At 7 years old, adjusting to shelter life after living in a loving home has been difficult for him. Shortly after his arrival, Zeus began experiencing concerning symptoms, including vomiting, loss of appetite, and bloody stool. He was referred to Wilmington Animal Hospital for further evaluation and advanced testing, where an ultrasound revealed a mass on his spleen. Zeus has since undergone a splenectomy, an important surgery that will allow him to live a happier, pain-free life. Following his procedure, Zeus was placed into a loving foster home where he can relax, heal, and recover in a calm, comfortable environment. This peaceful setting is exactly what he needs to regain his strength and emotional well-being after everything he’s been through! Zeus is a laid-back, low-key senior pup who enjoys chewing on bones, soaking up attention, and going for short walks. He is friendly with new people, easily won over by treats, and very affectionate. He enjoys long car rides, showing off his tricks, and melting into his friends for love! Given his age and size, Zeus is a low-maintenance companion who spends most of his day lounging or napping! If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. Story
Adonis and Titan are being fostered in Ohio. They are great with people, but probably best with older children due to their size. They are not good with small dogs or cats. Adonis and Titan are bonded, happy, enthusiastic, athletic, and affectionate 60-pound boxer/bulldog mixes who find joy in being around each other and people – ANY people! They were found starving, weak, and wandering in rural Kentucky, when they took shelter from a rainstorm in the home of a kind woman who opened her door. Adonis is suspected to be around 9-10 years old, blind, and the father of Titan. Titan, closer to 3 years old, was helping his dad survive as best he could and stayed loyally by his side. They found themselves at a county shelter where they quickly became staff favorites and were doted on by staff and volunteers alike. But the shelter was crowded and despite their best efforts, nobody came for the dynamic duo, so BDRA stepped up. Nobody is sure where this bonded father/son pair came from, and it’s hard to guess their story. They seem to be familiar with both the bad and good life. Both have mouths full of broken teeth. In fact, a few teeth just fell out of their mouths in their first days at their foster home. Their doctor thinks they broke their teeth chewing on chains or a metal cage, desperately trying to escape. They have matching scars on their legs where bones protrude, as if they were stuck laying in one position for long periods of time. They are also hand-shy around their heads. They were neglected, abandoned, and mistreated in the past. But they were also beloved house dogs once. They were already house trained, crate trained, and leash trained when they were picked up as strays. They take treats gently and think they are lap dogs. Adonis does a perfect “sit” (Titan is working on it) and Titan has a 100% return rate when playing fetch. They both come when called. They are both quick learners and food motivated. They love EVERY human they meet — and they want to meet every human they see! (People can be intimidated by their looks; they are big, athletic, and strong.) They absolutely LOVE kids, but forget how big they are, so small ones are not recommended. Adonis and Titan are sweet, loving, cuddly, and funny boys. They are big squishy babies who love to cuddle. They absolutely live for “Netflix and cuddle” time. They love to snuggle up on the couch with humans for a movie or TV marathon. Their foster parents always squish their faces because it's impossible not to. They soak up every bit of attention they can get. They live for cuddles, pets, attention, and treats. Adonis gets around very well despite his vision impairment. He occasionally runs into things and often stares at things that aren’t there, but he can go up and down stairs very well and navigates the house. He occasionally runs into things or isn’t sure where the steps start, but he can always find a treat, a cozy bed, or a person. (Or he’ll play Marco Polo and bark to get a response to find the person!) His sense of hearing and smell are perfect. Adonis has decided he is an inside dog and thinks the good life is in the house. Titan LOVES toys and playing fetch. He resource guards his toys because he’s convinced Adonis wants his toys (he usually doesn’t) and will pick a fight, so he has to be supervised with toys. He is very loving and listens to correction very well. He seems to have a strong prey drive, so no cats, bunnies, birds, or other small animals! They have a medium amount of energy. They can be couch potatoes, but they also like to run around and play in the backyard and take walks. But if it’s raining or extra cold, they don’t want anything to do with being outside any longer than necessary, and they are perfectly content to just be lazy all day. Titan has more energy than Adonis, being a younger guy, and will make up his own games in the back yard with his favorite green ball. Adonis prefers to sit on the deck or be inside — wherever the humans are! They love each other very much and get very worried when they are separated. They often sleep in the same (very large) dog bed together. They are very bonded. They have some resource guarding from having to survive on their own, so they must be fed separately and supervised with toys. But they have gotten much better as they have learned resources are unlimited. They are NOT good with cats or small dogs. Since they are SO enthusiastic about showing people their love, they are probably best for bigger kids. (They will knock the little ones down because they have no idea how big they are.) Adonis and Titan have seen hard times, but they don’t hold any grudges. These two are ready to find someone with bully-breed experience who appreciates the bully personality and quirks, and is ready to welcome the sometimes slobbery, but always enthusiastic zest for life that these two are offering! BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.

Story
✨Meet Lily!✨ Lily is a 5-year-old Boxer mix who came into us as a surrender from a commercial breeding facility (aka Puppy Mill) in Lancaster County. Lily had a very difficult life before coming to us, being used as a mill mama her entire life. She is shut down at this time but is slowly starting to give us her trust. We are confident she will make a wonderful family member for a very lucky family, who understands her past and gives her the time she needs to trust them and her new surroundings. Lily loves other animals, and will thrive in a home with at least one other dog. Adopting a puppy mill survivor is life-changing—for you and them. For these dogs, everything is new and often overwhelming: people, houses, stairs, leashes, food bowls, collars, toys, TVs, ovens, doorways, pavement…the list goes on. They need adopters who can move slowly, be patient, keep expectations reasonable, and provide the understanding and tools they need to grow into happy, confident companions. Patience, positive reinforcement, and understanding are key! We promise there is nothing that compares to gaining the love and trust of a mill mama, but it requires intentional effort and commitment from their new family. With the right guidance, puppy mill survivors can blossom into well-socialized, joyful dog- so our goal is always to ensure every adopter is fully prepared to give them the life and environment they need to truly thrive! If you are interested in being considered for them please apply on our website at www.angelsretreat.org 💕🐾 Angel’s Retreat West Chester, PA PA Kennel License 17335

Story
** Mabeline’s adoption fee has been generously sponsored by Eric and Amanda Sheron ** ✨Meet Mabeline!✨ Mabeline pulled as part of “Angel Retreat’s ACCT’s of love” program. Mabeline was originally brought into a shelter in Philadelphia after being found as a stray. This shelter is the only open intake shelter for the entire city, and is extremely underfunded and overcrowded. Mabeline tested positive for Parvo was time stamped for euthanasia. We gladly stepped up, and gave her all the medical care she desperately needed. Along with a lot of love and supportive care Mabeline now has fully recovered and is ready for a home of her own! Mabeline is an 8 month old mixed breed who is full of happiness for her second chance at life! She is the happiest and most wiggly little lady! Mabeline is a young and happy puppy that will require a family up to the task of providing her the ample physical and mental exercise and training that all dogs require. Update from foster: “Mabelline (aka Mabel, May-Belle, or “Maybe”) is a young-minded pup still figuring out the world. She’s shy with new dogs, so—as with all dogs—introductions should be supervised at first. Mabel’s initial introductions here were filled with caution, but after 2–3 days she settled in. She’s comfortable in our home and fenced yard. Mabel is very affectionate and people-focused—she loves being picked up and hugged, and will happily claim your lap for naps, though she’s also content just being nearby. She’s about 95% house-trained, sleeps through the night, and is an amazing companion who doesn’t pull on a leash! Even nail trimming was easy. Like any dog, she may get a little fussy if another dog takes her high-value toy, so she’d likely do best in a human-only home, but could live with another dog if slowly introduced correctly. Cats may be chased, but she shows no aggressive reaction when introductions with our cat are supervised. Crate note: She may protest briefly at first, but if ignored she settles quickly for the night. Overnight crating is likely no longer necessary and may be phased out very soon. She’ll be hard to let go, but she deserves a loving home.” If you are interested in being considered for them please apply on our website at www.angelsretreat.org 💕🐾 Angel’s Retreat West Chester, PA PA Kennel License 17335

Story
This friend has just arrived because their owner could no longer keep them. While owners can provide some history on their pets, our medical and behavioral teams will still evaluate them. Dogs that have lived in homes previously typically have some training established, but we cannot guarantee that those behaviors will remain consistent in a new home environment. They are pending interactions with other animals at the shelter until they have been cleared by our vet. Our staff will spend some time getting to know them and we will update their bio with more information as we learn. If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. If you are interested in this specific dog but it ends up not being the best fit upon meeting, our adoption counselors will work with you to help find a match! Story
ABOUT ROSIE Rosie’s life began in a heartbreaking situation. She was rescued from a dog-fighting ring in Pennsylvania, a past no dog should ever endure. At that rescue, Rosie was adopted out and finally thought she had a chance for a peaceful future. But then, she was abandoned on our property, and while we were able to locate her former owners, they chose not to reclaim her. Through every loss and upheaval, Rosie has continued to do something remarkable: she has never lost trust or love in people! Now 9 years old, this pittie mix is hoping to truly find her forever! Rosie adores people and forms deep bonds with her humans. She’s the kind of dog you’ll find snuggled up with staff and volunteers, soaking up every cuddle she can get. Her tail wags easily, her eyes are soft, and her affection is endless. Rosie has worked hard to become the wonderful companion she is today. She’s house-trained, walks beautifully on a leash, knows her basic commands, and is eager to please. Being food-motivated makes her a quick learner, and she loves showing off how smart she is! Her favorite moments are the simple ones, rolling in the grass, enjoying the outdoors, and stretching out at your feet for belly rubs! Because of her past experiences, Rosie needs to be the only pet in the home, where she can feel safe and secure. In return, she will give unwavering loyalty, affection, and companionship! **Rosie must be the only pet in a home! If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! ABOUT SUGAR COOKIE As her name would suggest, this lady is sweet as sugar! Sugar Cookie came to HAP when she was abandoned as a stray. Despite looking for her owner, sadly, no one came looking for her. We estimate her to be around 6 years old. While many pups may lose trust after being abandoned, that is not our Sugar! She loves people and making new friends! When she's not leaning into your legs or climbing in your lap for love, she can usually be seen curled up on her bed for a nice, long nap. Sugar has made some doggy friends at the shelter too, though she prefers more laid-back pups. She already knows basic commands, appears house-trained and walks well on a leash. Sugar has thrived participating in our Doggy Day Out program, check out what one volunteer had to say about her: "Today I hung out with Sugar Cookie. She is just the sweetest thing, she did so great in the car, and loved sitting on my friends laps so she could stick her head out the window. We went on a walk and ran around the back yard. Sugar was pretty good on a leash and only needed some redirection (which she responded very well to). She loved feeling the snow on her paws. We then went back in to have a dance party where she jumped and ran around the whole time. Eventually she got tired out and we snuggled on the couch. She truly is the most precious, loving dog who deserves the BEST home ever. I love her." - Grace "Got to take out the sweetest Sugar Cookie today. She's truly an angel and was so good the whole time. She walked very nicely on her leash, stayed calm the whole time, and wanted to say hi to everyone. Everyone who met her on the walk loved her and she loved getting butt scratches from everyone haha. She'd be a wonderful addition to any home " - Anna "Sugar Cookie is a sweet pitty girl. She is very sweet and loves her people so we decided it was time to take her out and about. She walks well on the leash but is a strong girl and can pull a little bit. She takes her treats nicely and knows basic commands. She was pretty well-behaved inside a public establishment with multiple other dogs around. She met lots of people, including some kids at both establishments we visited. She rode well in the car and just enjoyed looking out the windows and sniffing the air! I would not hesitate to take her out and about again so she can show everyone how great she is!" - Tim.
