We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit that rescues and places homeless, neglected or abused dogs from high-kill shelters in the south into loving, responsible committed and permanent homes. We feel our comprehensive adoption process which includes not only taking the time to match the dog to the prospective new owner but helping to educate that owner in responsible dog care, allows us to find the best homes for our little buddies and the best companions for you! Each week we use USDA certified transports to bring dogs from high-kill shelters in the south to our fosters where they all receive the appropriate medical care and are placed in nurturing loving homes while they await placement in their forever homes. Interested in one of our dogs? Great! Now that you've seen them here you'll need to go to our website where you'll find our list of adoptable dogs (updated every week). If everything works out, they will set an appointment with you so come out and "visit" with the dog you're interested in (we want to make sure that not only are you a good fit for the dog but that the dog will fit with you). If everything works out, you'll be able to take rover (or spot, or jax) home with you that very day. A couple of things you should know: We can't hold dogs over the phone or via email. Adoption fees vary based on breed. All of our dogs have been vet checked and dewormed (if possible due to age, additional treatment may be needed). Story
This friend has just arrived because their owner could no longer keep them. While owners can provide some history on their pets, our medical and behavioral teams will still evaluate them. Dogs that have lived in homes previously typically have some training established, but we cannot guarantee that those behaviors will remain consistent in a new home environment. They are pending interactions with other animals at the shelter until they have been cleared by our vet. Our staff will spend some time getting to know them and we will update their bio with more information as we learn. If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. If you are interested in this specific dog but it ends up not being the best fit upon meeting, our adoption counselors will work with you to help find a match! All household members, including children and other dogs, must come along for the meeting to make sure it's a good fit. If a match is made, we encourage same-day adoptions! Our adoption fees include the animals' spay/neuter, microchip, age-appropriate vaccinations and preventatives, fecal testing, heartworm testing, and a small bag of food to get you started.

Story
ABOUT PAISLEY Meet Paisley, affectionately known as Pai-Pai or Paisley Pie by our staff! This sweet 3-year-old girl came to HAP when her owner had to move back home with family members who are allergic to dogs. When Paisley first arrived, she had very dry and irritated skin, but after a diet change and some treatment, she’s made a remarkable recovery! A few weeks in our care, and she’s grown her fur back, revealing not only her beautiful markings but also her equally stunning personality! Her favorite thing in the world is curling up on your lap and falling asleep—nothing beats a good cuddle for this girl! She thrives on attention, is very treat-motivated, and loves to please. Paisley is crate-trained, and walks well on a leash. If you’re looking for a companion who loves adventure as much as she loves snuggling with her humans, Paisley Pie is the perfect girl for you! Check out what our volunteers had to say about their Doggy Day Out with Paisley: "Paisley is such a sweet, sweet girl. She hopped right up into my SUV with no problem and she rides great. Walking her is so easy, she really doesn’t zig-zag. She walks pretty straight, and there is slack in the leash. If you tell her to leave something, she listens. Because of the rain yesterday, we walked on paved trails. In one little section, there was muddy water on both sides with a narrow dry path between. I told her to not get into the water, and she carefully walked on the dry part. She tended to match the reaction of whatever dog we were passing. If they got a bit excited, so did she. If they were calm, so was she. Paisley gives the sweetest kisses. She loved meeting people on the walk. A number of people said they would take her if they could. I really enjoyed the day with her." -Karen "Paisley and I had an amazing day together exploring Middle Run Valley! It took us a bit to find the perfect trail, but once we did, she was an absolute star. She’s fantastic on a leash, no pulling, just patience and enthusiasm as we made our way down the slopes. She loved sniffing and exploring, taking in all the new sights and smells. One of the best moments? A big log had fallen across the trail, resting on a steep hillside. Paisley climbed up it eagerly (I got a great picture!) and, instead of carefully walking back down, she took a flying leap and happily continued her walk. She really wanted to play in the stream, too, this girl loves adventure! We met a few groups of people and she was beyond excited to say hello, offering her signature flying kisses. She also has the cutest little snorts and snuffles as she walks, sounding like a happy little piglet. Paisley is not only a joy on adventures but also a total cuddlebug at home. She’s an absolutely stunning dog, and I think she deserves an updated glamour shot to show just how beautiful she truly is! If you’re looking for a dog who’s equal parts trail buddy and couch companion, Paisley is your girl!" - Em If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Story
ABOUT BEBE Meet Bebe, our beautiful 3-year-old brindle terrier mix! Bebe came to HAP when her owners were no longer able to keep her, but her journey with us has been quite the adventure. You might recognize her face, as Bebe literally broke out of the shelter shortly after arriving! Now, you may be wondering how that happened... well, it turns out that this wasn’t Bebe’s first great escape! Let’s just say, if there were a canine version of the game show ‘Survivor,’ our money would definitely be on Bebe for the win. After nearly a month of avoiding people and living off the land, Bebe was spotted a few miles away, sharing food with a feral cat colony. We were able to safely return her to the shelter, and since then, she’s been a completely different dog! During her time on the run, our whole team spent countless hours searching woods, parking lots, businesses, anywhere we could think of, while Bebe kept her distance. But now, she’s all about loving her friends at the shelter and gets super excited to spend time with people. Bebe loves to enjoy hard bones, stuffed toys, chasing squeaky balls, and she’s a pro at puzzle toys. She knows sit, paw, and stay, and will tilt her head when you talk to her, hanging on to every word you say. And don’t let her adventurous side fool you, she’s also a big snuggle bug who loves cuddling up next to her people. She gets along great with other dogs and is both house- and crate-trained. If you’re looking for a best friend who loves both affection and adventure, Bebe is the perfect girl for you! *In case Bebe gets any ideas in her new home, we’ll be sending her home with a GPS tracking collar! It’s important that Bebe’s adopters understand she needs a secure living situation, without free access to the outdoors (e.g., no doggy doors, keeping front doors closed, etc.). Story
Graham is a very sweet and playful dog! He is one of our longest residents as he has been here since September of 2022! We took him on from another rescue, so he has not known much of the comforts of a home. He enjoys walks outside, playing with toys, and sleeping in crazy positions. He loves attention from anyone and everyone. He just wants to be loved. In his ideal home he would be the only pet as he loves all the attention to himself. He would do well with kids 10+ as he doesn’t know that he is a little to large to be a lap do. He would do best in a home with an active owner. His adoption fee is covered by an amazing sponsr. Please fill out an application to meet Graham!

Story
Luigi came to us from a family member who is now deceased. He is going to be 6 years old on April 29th. Luigi was originally adopted by his first owner from a pet store and went home with malnutrition and heartworms. He has all of the traditional personality characteristics of a pit bull. He loves to cuddle, loves to sunbathe and to exercise, curling up on a couch or his cushioned bed, and loves chew toys but will tear the floof out of anything soft. He is loving and loyal with occasional zoomies. Although his recall could use some work, Luigi adheres to commands including, sit, up, down, lay, stay, leave it, go out. He is well crate-trained and potty trained. Unfortunately, we have been experiencing behavioral issues from Luigi, primarily unexpected lunging. He would best be suited with an experienced adopter who is single and can offer optimal exercising and additional training. He can be good with small dogs but would recommend him to be a solo pet.
