Story
Luna is the rescues longest resident. As a young puppy Luna was sent to a board n train where harsh methods were used and her trust in humans was completely destroyed. She was flown down to us from a shelter in San Jose in the hopes we could work with her and get her to the point of being able to safely be adopted out. Luna has definitely been a labor of love but she is ready for a home of her own now. She has perfect house manners and is completely house broken. She walks beautifully on a leash and participates in our pack walks where she solicits love and attention from everyone. On the homefront she can be protective but she is a corso, and this is to be expected. She’s been fostered with both dogs and cats and with proper introductions would easily be able to live with other pets. She’s never had an altercation with any animal. She really needs a home with someone who understands the breed and loves cuddling with their pup as she’s a huge cuddler.

ATTENTION:  All of our dogs are in private foster homes.  We do NOT have a kennel with multiple dogs.  If you find a dog you want to meet in person, please go to www.secondchancedogrescue.org and complete an application.    We will make every attempt to process all applications within 3 business days of receipt. // // Duke is Courtesy Post Only and is not a Second Chance Dog Rescue dog. SCDR is not responsible for any ownership, behavior, health, and representations made by the owner with respect this dog. Please contact their owner,  Dawn at dawn.regner@yahoo.com for further information.   ************** Duke is a beautiful Cane Corso (approx. 2-3 years old) who is fully potty trained, crate trained, and neutered.  He is up to date on all vaccinations and has been given a clean bill of health by the vet.  He is friendly and affectionate; in many ways, he is a gentle giant.  Duke loves to play in the yard (he does get the zoomies from time to time, which can be quite an exciting experience for this 100-lb dog!) but also likes some routine and structure.  After a good romp around the backyard, chasing toys and jumping around, he’s happy to settle in for a nice nap! He gets along very well with other dogs, including our 8-year-old Maltipoo.  Duke also goes to doggie daycare twice a week and loves hanging out with all his friends there.  He is also great with kids. The ideal home would be one with some room to run and play (and maybe even another doggie friend in home to play with!), and with someone who is home often and can devote a little time and attention (preferably an owner who has had experience with dogs of his size and/or breed).  He’s not thrilled with being alone for long stretches, and when that’s necessary he tends to prefer the crate.  Because he has undergone some trauma in his past, he has a few issues with anxiety.  But he’s happy to give (and receive!) a lot of love and will make a great family dog in the right home. For further information on Duke, please contact, his owner Dawn at dawn.regner@yahoo.com. Story
Rene was wandering around the block for several weeks, until he was given the opportunity to enter the home of one of the rescuers. He has been a very protective, loving dog, and from the first moment he was always grateful. He has gained weight and is ready for his new home. He loves to get close to the fence to be petted by neighbors. He is good with cats, although because of his size we do not leave him unsupervised when he is with them, and he lives with most females. He doesn't like to have another male around, he is the alpha and everyone knows it, but with people, he is the biggest baby of them all. He loves treats, lots of love and affection, going for walks and playing with balls and rubber toys. The $350.00 adoption fee covers the following: Transport to San Diego, CA. Spay/Neuter. All vaccines up to date. Deworming (puppies 2 sets). Flea medication up to date. Tick control up to date. Microchip. Microchip registration to new owner paid for. Collar. Temporary leash. The adoption fee does not include transportation to North of San Diego

Story
How this pet arrived: Snickerdoodle was brought in by a community member. At SDHS:Snickerdoodle has been vaccinated, microchipped, spayed/neutered and is now ready for her new home! Why Snickerdoodle might be the one for you: Snickerdoodle tries to look like a big, tough guy but she can't pull it off because she is a pussycat of a dog. With her wiggly body and wagging tail, she is not fooling anyone. She is a lover, not a fighter. It is hard not to laugh at her lip that usually curls around a tooth. And, those little ears? They are funny too. She will benefit from some additional dog training to understand what you expect of her. She may not be a lap dog (after all, she is big) but she will lean in so close to you that she might as well be on your lap. She will want pets often and everywhere. There will probably be rollovers for lots of belly rubs. She will want to learn tricks and play ball with you. Do you have the space, inside and out, for this big girl to run and play? Do you want a big tough looking dude dog who is really a softie who wants to cuddle? Come and meet the Snickerdoodle.   Primary Color: Beige Weight: 61.5 Age: 4yrs 0mths 2wks

Story
Apollo is a beautiful purebred Cane Corso. He will need a strong owner who has experience with mastiffs, pit bulls or bulldogs. Apollo would do best in an active home with good fencing. He loves to run and play but dog parks are a no no. Typical of this breed, he does not do well with other male dogs. Apollo likes to play hard so supervision with female dogs is needed at the start. He is also loving and sweet and would love to curl up on the couch with you! Very good on a leash as well.

Story
Meet Wicket (as in golf term --- not Wicked.....)!  She spent weeks hiding off the freeway, taking refuge in the back of a driving range before being secured by us.  No doubt, once loved and left behind for reasons we will never know. This lady is STUNNING and demonstrates the positive qualities of the breed when it comes to behavior. She is wiggily, goofy, silly and loves to give kisses. Everyone ALWAYS stops at her little cot in the sun at our events and comments on how well behaved she is. She knows sit, down and shake. She lets kids come up and say hello or "wave" to get anyones attention or treat.  She loves to have her face "gooshed" (IYKYK). She is super sweet and all around just a lovely girl. Occassionally she has a timid moment but retreats for reassurance from her handler.  She is incredibly food motivated and amazing on leash with a handler that will LEAD her.  While on her own she likely encountered some predators and unfriendly off leash dogs so is insecure about dogs in general leading to defensive behavior if not led properly.  For now she needs to be an only dog because she's "young and dumb" but responds well to correction and direction.  Little dogs or cats are a definite NO for her.  She is incredibly smart, well mannerd and ready to make someone one an amazing companion. She is a favorite for all that meet her.  It's time for her to step out on her own with a loving family that will teach her forever is full of safety, love and unconditional acceptance.  Looking for the breed but not the size (we've asked several breed experts and all confirm she is likely pure Corso)?  Maybe that's you?   ##2240922##

Story
Your Gentle Giant Looking for Love! Hello there, I'm Hippo, a 5-year-old Bull Mastiff mix, a big boy at 87 lbs, and neutered. I was pulled from the Riverside shelter by TAP and I am so grateful for that! I have picked up bathroom manners, working on leash manners. I have separation  anxiety and current medications to help with separation anxiety include Trazodone (~$7.00), Gabapentin (~$13.00), Acepromazine as needed (~$25.00), and Prozac (~$5.00). Monthly cost depending on where purchased and market value.  I may look imposing at first glance, but once you get to know me, you'll see I'm the sweetest and most loveable companion you could ever ask for. I love affection, and snuggling up next to my humans is one of my favorite pastimes. I'm generally friendly with other dogs, but I might need a slow introduction to make sure we're all on the same page. When I'm inside the house, I sometimes get a bit anxious and bark at people passing by, but don't worry – once we're outside, I'll mostly be an observer, calmly taking in the world around me. I can show some leash reactivity though. With some patience, understanding, and positive reinforcement training, I'm sure I can overcome this behavior. I adore outdoor adventures and walks, but I can get a little distracted if there's too much going on around me. I find night walks with minimal distractions to be the best for me. That way, I can focus on our quality time together without getting overwhelmed by everything happening around us. One of my quirks is that I like to playfully bite ankles and wrists when I want to wake you up or just engage in some playtime. I promise it's all in good fun! But for this reason, a family with older kids or adults might be a better fit for me. I would absolutely love a fun-loving home with a yard! Having a safe and secure place to play and explore would make me one happy pup! I'm quite adaptable, so whether you lead an active lifestyle or prefer a more laid-back approach, I'll fit right in. Just as long as I get plenty of love and attention, I'll be content. So, are you ready to open your heart and home to a gentle giant like me? I guarantee that with a little understanding, patience, and love, I'll be the most loyal and loving companion you could ever wish for. Let's embark on this incredible journey together, creating unforgettable memories and forging an unbreakable bond. ##1733826##

Meet Beethoven. This young boy is an almost 2 year old puppy, affectionate, effusive, and sometimes a little goofy, but he is a dog that has a lot of love to give, he has been spoiled and loved from the moment he was found, and he is looking for a home where he will be given the same love. He plays with cats and dogs and gets along well with children and adults. At first he may be a little shy, but he adapts very quickly. He loves walks, treats and chew toys. He knows basic commands and is very easy to be training, he is food-motivated. He will be happy to see you before a workday and play a little with you. He licks like a turtle to give you affection and will hug you with his front legs. The $350.00 adoption fee covers the following: Transport to San Diego, CA. Spay/Neuter. All vaccines up to date. Story
Leo is a gorgeous neapolitan mastiff.  His ideal home would be a home with someone who knows the breed and can set boundaries for him to thrive. He has the potential to do well with other dogs as long as the other dogs have good temperament. He was fostered with kids who were 12 years of age and he did good with them. Come meet sweet Leo if you are looking for a gorgeous large boy. Leo's adoption comes with training. February 4, 2025, 10:08 pm
