Apply to Adopt Me! Meet Benji.  This handsome and smiley 7yo, 18-lb. Chihuahua mix just loves life! He is very friendly, loves people and other dogs. He will bark at and chase a cat though if the cat runs. He is mostly leash trained and crate trained. We are working on his potty training, and he is starting to go to the door when he wants to go out, but he does need to be taken out on a regular schedule. He will mark at first, so a belly band is needed for him in the beginning. This sweet boy's most favorite thing in the world to do is to play with another playful dog, so we are wanting a playmate for him, as well as a fenced yard to run and play in. He also loves playing with toys. He is a submissive, easy-going guy. Benji is heartworm positive at this time, and is on the slow kill protocol, which we can explain that process to any interested applicant. He can enjoy regular activities. Heart worm disease is contracted from an infected mosquito and cannot be transmitted to another dog. Apply to Adopt Me! Lizzie is an approx. 3-year-old, 10 1/2 lb. snuggle bug. This long-hair chihuahua is a super chill and loving dog who enjoys hanging out with her person on the couch. Poor Lizzie was abandoned in an apartment in a small crate with no food or water, and it was two weeks before she was discovered. She was shy at first but then started to gain trust.  Lizzie gets along well with all people and is in a home with other small dogs and does great. We have not seen her around a cat but believe she would be fine. Lizzie is both potty trained and crate trained. She sleeps all night in her foster mom's bed. She will also chase toys when you throWhen it comes to car rides, she’s happy to let someone else navigate and prefers to relax in the back seat. Bath time, however, is not on Lizzie's list of favorite things! She’ll let you know how she feels by taking off like her life depends on it. Lizzie does great on walks, although she will bark at people, other dogs and loud vehicles. Don’t let the barking fool you—it’s all bark and no bite. Once she has a chance to meet someone, she is as sweet as can be. Apply to Adopt Me! Poppie is an adorable 7-8yo, 16-lb. possible chihuahua/pug mix. Her curly-Q pigtail is the cutest thing. She came to LR obese, weighing 21lbs. so she has made great progress with her weight loss. She has been slowly losing weight with controlled food, short walks and lots of yard time where she loves soaking up the sun and chasing lizards. She is a Georgia gal whose owner passed away and left nowhere for her to go. She is currently living with 5 other dogs from small to medium size, as well as a senior cat. She is cat friendly 90% of the time, but she does sometimes bark at the cat, so it may be best if the home is cat free. Poppie loves pets and belly rubs; her chosen place to sleep at night is beside her person on the human bed, sometimes under the covers. She likes to chew on stuffies, but they aren’t allowed because she pulls the stuffing out which she could swallow, and she has no interest in chew bones. Poppie is house trained as long as she is taken out on a regular schedule. She doesn’t give cues when she needs to go out, so it's up to you to take her out every few hours, but sleeps through the night without needing to go. Sometimes she burrows under a cover, thinking she is all hidden yet her booty is exposed lol. Poppie loves meal time, and treats get her attention right away - but due to her full figure, she is fed low-calorie veggies like raw or cooked zucchini or cauliflower, and cooked broccoli, which she loves. She does well riding in the car. She is friendly with everyone at the vet, until a needle comes out, but who can blame her for that. Poppie does great in any crowded setting, she doesn't bark at other people or dogs, and is super friendly to everyone who greets her. Poppie had dental disease when she came into rescue, and 7 teeth were extracted during her dental surgery last month. During a walk, her foster mom noticed a “hitch” in her step, so an appointment was made with our rehab vet where it was determined that Poppie has a luxating patella on her left hind leg, a grade 2 out of 4, which is a milder grade. This condition is when the kneecap pops out of its normal groove, causing a “skipping” gait. This does not cause her any pain. Her rehab vet has her on a home exercise routine 4-5 days per week to strengthen the ligaments surrounding the knee; her forever person will need to continue these easy 10-minute exercises to prevent the luxation from worsening. Poppie looks forward to her exercises because they involve treats. Poppie walks well on leash and loves going on walks. She is non-reactive to other dogs and people. Her foster mom takes a stroller along and she walks a little and rides a little, and repeats this during the walk. She also enjoys short walks early morning or evening. She is on a daily supplement to support her joints, but no other meds are needed. Besides the knee “hitch” she is a healthy girl with no heart or lung issues. She can jump up on the couch by herself, and goes up and down doggy stairs to get on the taller bed.  Poppie has a funny personality, she can be talkative - when she wants you to pet her, or when she wants to go to sleep and wants you to stop petting her. This adds to her charm. Sometimes when you stop petting her she will touch your hand with her paw for more pets. And who can resist that?  We are requiring a fenced yard for her to chase lizards and bask in the sun. Fluffy is a sweet, loving dog with plenty of energy and an affectionate personality. Through no fault of his own, the past few years have been difficult. Due to changes in his living situation and his original owner’s declining health, he hasn’t received the consistent care and attention he deserves. Fluffy is looking for a patient, loving home where he can finally have stability, kindness, and the time to thrive. He would do best with someone who understands that he may need a little extra patience as he adjusts, but he has so much love to give in return.

Our sweet chihuahua has been in our life for 15 yrs. We have had numerous other dogs and a cat- he has tolerated them all but always established himself as the alpha. We will be moving across country and the trip alone will take a toll on him. Where we are staying doesn’t allow pets. I Need someone to care for him in the little time he has left.

Johnny is being fostered in VA. Only read about Johnny if you are looking for a gentle, small dog to add to your family! Johnny Update – April 1, 2026: Johnny has been doing very well! He has not needed to go to the vet since January! While he still has a bit of a head tilt due to vestibular syndrome (see information below), it is much improved and he is more and more likely to walk in a straight line instead of circling. He has been enjoying the warmer weather, and likes to wander in the yard now which he did not want to do when the weather was cold. He loves to eat and, before snack time at noon, he often will drool a little bit because he is so excited! And, at times, it seems like he is hearing a little bit better than he was – although there still is a hearing loss. For more information about this sweet boy, read what his foster home wrote about him in January 2026. See below. There are so many good things to share about Johnny but, first, his history. Johnny lost his Kerrville, Texas home on July 4th 2025 when his community experienced catastrophic flooding. Johnny landed in the area shelter and the shelter staff, once they determined Johnny’s Texas family was unable to care for him and realized Johnny was blind, reached out to the Blind Dog Rescue to request foster placement. Plans were made and Johnny soon traveled to his Virginia Blind Dog Rescue foster home. His transport to Virginia was long – two days of traveling one weekend, a week in a temporary foster home in Alabama, and then one more travel day to get to Virginia. Without exception, every driver plus his temporary foster family said Johnny is a great traveler and such a sweet boy. Now that you know his history, here are some good things to share about Johnny: -has a coat the color of a penny! So beautiful! -crate trained -good with other dogs -aware of cats but ignores -great eater -good traveler in the car -does well at the vet -loves head rubs -sleeps quietly all night -and is a very quiet dog during the day! He has barked just a few times since arriving in his foster home (that happens about once every other week, when he is excited about meal prep). If you are still interested in this special little guy, here are more details about Johnny, including his health history. Johnny quickly learned the daily routine in his foster home. He is waiting at our feet when breakfast and dinner are being prepared. He is also standing in the kitchen for mid-day snack. He knows every evening it is “sofatime” – a time when he is on the sofa with the other four dogs in the house and his foster mom too. He curls up and takes a nap, although does enjoy a head rub. And, at the end of the day, he goes right to sleep in his bed in his crate, and never makes a sound and sleeps all night. Johnny likes to sniff around outside but generally does his business and is ready to go back in. He is from Texas so is a little uncertain about wet and cool weather but he is getting acclimated! He needs to be carried up and down steps. The best thing about Johnny is his personality. While he sometimes enjoys playing and gets excited at mealtime, he is generally very low-key, very gentle, and sweet. He has started giving occasional kisses too. While not diagnosed with dementia, he is starting to show some signs that this may be an issue. For example, he will be taken outside and then stand there a while, like he is unsure why he is out there! Like many rescue dogs, especially seniors, Johnny has some medical issues that have needed to be addressed. When he arrived at his foster home, he was missing hair on his back and on top of his tail too, likely due to a former flea infestation. His hair is very slowly growing back. Johnny also has had dry skin and some small lumps and bumps like many older dogs have. His skin has improved and he is on daily fish oil to help. When he first arrived, Johnny needed a dental and also had two large lumps plus a small one removed. Johnny had those procedures completed and he did very well, with a good recovery. Then, in January 2026, a lump was removed on his left front paw. All these lumps were benign but of course he (like all dogs) need their lumps – and areas where lumps were removed - to be monitored. When Johnny first came to his foster home, he had a quiet, brief cough once or twice a day. The vet said this could be a mild trachea collapse, could be allergies, or could be mild bronchitis. At that point, because it was so infrequent, she said no further follow-up or treatment was needed. She also said his lungs were clear and his heart sounded good. Over time, the coughing has periodically increased in frequency and so, in January, Johnny had an x-ray which revealed that his heart is now enlarged. Also, an arrhythmia was detected that had not been heard before. He was diagnosed with early heart disease and this likely explains the increased coughing. He now takes Vetmedin and Benazepril daily. In early September, Johnny had a sudden onset of vestibular syndrome. For those interested in adopting Johnny and/or if you have questions about vestibular syndrome, speak with your vet. It is a relatively common condition. Johnny developed a head tilt to the left and began circling to the left. He also had nystagmus (rapid eye movements). His appetite was not affected; he still loves to eat. The vet said Johnny has a mild case of vestibular syndrome and his symptoms have improved (the nystagmus has almost disappeared). However, he still has a left head tilt (very slowly improving) and he still tends to walk in circles to the left, and this can make it challenging for him to walk on a leash. But recently he has just begun to turn his head to the right and sometimes walk to the right! The vet said in September he may have a lingering head tilt but he should not be circling as much as time passes. It is important to know that mild vestibular syndrome is not life-threatening. It is also important to know that there is a chance Johnny will continue to improve - and also a chance he will not. A couple pictures on Johnny’s profile on the BDRA website show his current head tilt/turn. Before Johnny had vestibular syndrome, he was great with housetraining. Once the vestibular symptoms started, he began to have occasional daily accidents in the house and this has continued. Johnny is taken out every 2 to 3 hours during the day and wears a belly band around the clock because his accidents are unpredictable. Johnny has also lost most of his hearing since arriving at his foster home. In addition, he cannot see at all. His eyes have some very minimal clear drainage at times but are currently healthy. His eye pressure is normal (no glaucoma) at this time and he does not have dry eye. He had eye ulcers when leaving the shelter but those have resolved. He does have fairly frequent instances of reverse sneezing. We don’t know Johnny’s history before he arrived at the Texas shelter and so – as it is with any rescue dog – we can’t predict what the future holds for his health. Anyone interested in adopting Johnny should speak with their vet about not only vestibular syndrome but also about heart disease. Johnny has not spent time with children and, although he is such a nice dog, he should be adopted in a home with older children or adults only. And he should always be supervised when he is with young children, as all dogs should be.
