Story
Penny is being fostered in PA. Hi, I’m Penny and I am searching for my forever family. I love to cuddle, give kisses, and snuggle under blankets. My foster mom says that I am very sweet, and I am, except when I grumble at one of my blind foster siblings when they step on me when I am asleep. I don’t like that very much and I’m sure to tell them how I feel. I will play with them when I am awake and get along with them very well. I am always scared when someone picks me up and my foster parents say that I get crazy legs that go all over the place. I much prefer to walk by myself or hold on tight to my foster mom when she carries me. I know how to go up the stairs all by myself, but I don’t know how to go back down again. I was taken into the shelter as a neglect case and reported to be 9 years old, but I am very young at heart. I will be getting spayed in November. I will go potty outside but if I really have to go when I am inside, I will use a wee pad like a good girl. I like to dance around on my back legs and get lots of attention. My foster mom says that I have one very bad habit and I don’t want to give it up no matter how many times I am told “No”. I like to gobble up all of my food and then try to steal everyone else’s. My foster mom makes me eat in a different room and I still try to sneak my way to the others. BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.

Story
Nacho is being fostered in VA. Nacho, a beautiful, sweet, and smart chihuahua mix, was turned into a shelter in Virginia in early January 2024 after her owner was no longer able to care for her. After just a couple days in the shelter, she was pulled by the Blind Dog Rescue and is now in a Virginia BDRA foster home. Nacho was seriously ill when she arrived at her foster home. She was taken immediately to the vet and it was determined she has diabetes. She is now on insulin injections twice a day and she is doing much better (she is currently using Vetsulin). While her blood glucose levels are not always within range, she has been doing so great – she is active, eating well, no peeing or pooping inside, etc. – and seems very healthy. Periodically she will need a glucose curve completed, which can be done at the vet or can be done with a continuous glucose monitor at home. She is good with getting her insulin injections. She was very thin when she arrived at her foster home (7 pounds) but has gained some weight and now weighs about 10 pounds. She looks terrific! She can see some although may bump into things too; she does have bilateral cataracts and dry eye, and she is on Optimmune once a day to treat the dry eye. Optimmune is completely controlling the dry eye and she is a very good sport about this medicine being put into her eyes. She can hear well and seems to understand some words, including “out” when it is time for her to go outside for a walk in the yard. She has a grade I-II heart murmur that requires no treatment. Because she had rabies certificate from her prior owner that indicated she was not spayed, she was taken to the vet for her spay and, once she was under anesthesia and her belly was shaved, there was a faint scar just where a spay scar would be. The vet felt she has been spayed because of the scar and also because she has no mammary development which would have been typical for a dog who had not been altered. So, she got a dental done instead; she had her teeth cleaned and 7 teeth pulled and she made it through the procedure like a champ. Nacho has settled into her foster home. She learned the routine pretty quickly! She loves to eat; she is generally a quiet dog but just before mealtime she gets loud and, when she knows the food bowl is coming, her tail wags so hard as she turns in a circle. She is a little sad, though, that she is not allowed snacks since diabetic dogs should just eat twice a day; she loves to eat! She sleeps quietly through the night in an indoor pen. She is housetrained. She doesn’t mind the leash. She likes to be outside to walk around and smell all the smells. She can walk up and down the two steps that connect the deck to the yard but could have trouble walking up and down a flight of stairs; at her foster home, she is always on the first floor. When she is going to be picked up, she likes a pat on her head and to hear a few words from her foster parents first (instead of just picking her up without touching her and talking to her first); then she is glad to be picked up and she likes to be carried around. The person who adopts Nacho should be prepared to go slowly with her, especially at the beginning, until she knows the routine and the people in her home. She now loves attention from her foster parents, and especially loves her head and her belly rubbed. She also doesn’t mind sitting in a lap either! And she is excited to sit on the sofa in the evenings with her foster mom along with other dogs that live in her home. She also gets excited when her foster parents come home after being out of the house running errands. Nacho generally ignores the other dogs in the home but she has not liked it if one of them (the ones who are blind) bumps into her bed when she is in it. She also does not like it when they bump into her before mealtime when all the dogs are excited and moving around. So, she is kept separate from the other dogs in the foster home, although she sees them outside and may even get very close to them, and she ignores them. She also ignores them when she sees them at the gate that separates her room from their room. Nacho’s foster parents think she could be fine in a home with other dogs who can see (so they would not accidentally bump into her or her bed), but there is no guarantee of that, so she would be best as the only dog in the house. And she would love being the only dog so she would get all the attention! And, while she loves attention, she is also just fine taking a nap when her foster parents are busy. She loves to bury herself under the blankets so you can’t even tell she is there. She is interested in the smell of the family cat but does not try to chase her, and does not bark at her or seem upset about the cat. But Nacho has a very good nose on her, and can tell if the cat has walked by or if a strange dog has been in the yard and she will become alert and walk in the direction of the smell. Nacho would not be good in a home with young children. Young children tend to move quickly and unpredictably, and she may not be happy about that. Nacho is ready for the perfect forever home! If you think you might be able to provide the perfect home for Nacho, fill out an application today! If you have questions about what it might be like to live with a dog with diabetes, please speak with your vet. And please know it is not hard! And Nacho is worth the effort! And remember the Blind Dog Rescue can work out a transport to get Nacho to you (within reasonable distance). BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.

Story
Meet Reed! Hello everyone, my name is Reed! You might think I look a little funny with little to no hair, but would you guess that I don't have a single hairless breed in my DNA, despite being found near a house that had been breeding hairless dogs? Yep, that just means I'm special! As an adult dog that weighs just 27 pounds, I have some very easily treatable skin issues. I just need to have a special bath every 1-2 weeks in the summer when my skin gets a bit sticky and as needed in the winter. Voila! Foster mom says I'm a really good boy, that might be a bit misunderstood by the average person, so she says I need to look for just the right one to be my forever human. You see, I'm pretty fearful of things, loud noises, and fast movements being one of them, so I shouldn't live with kiddos. I'd actually prefer to live with just one person or a very quiet two people. Men can sometimes be scary for me, so I'd prefer humans of the female variety. I get along with quiet dogs who kind of just like lounging around. I'm a good boy and go potty outside. Actually, I enjoy being outside a lot! Good thing I don't mind wearing clothes, because I'll need to wear them in the summer to protect my skin, and in the cooler month to keep me warm! I'm not a super huge fan of crates, but my foster mom has one set up for me as a safe space if people come over or if I just need a little downtime. I enjoy going on walks and do well on a leash. I really really want to do what my humans want me to do, but I tend to be scared to do some things. I'm never trying to be naughty, I just don't know how to talk human to let you know! The only way I know how to say I'm scared of something is to give a grumble. That doesn't make me a bad guy, I'm just doing the only thing I can to communicate. I That's where the special person comes in to play. My human will have to be able to see when I'm uncomfortable and intervene if I get in over my head in certain situations. I take some medicine for my anxiety to help me not be quite so scared, and that has been really helpful! I'm not asking for a lot in life, just to be understood. Do you think you can be my special person? Albert's Dog Lounge is a specialty rescue focusing primarily on senior and special needs dogs. Story
Meet Bobo! Hello, my name is Bobo! I'm a sweet, senior, southern gentleman coming from TN. I'm just a little guy, weighing 12 pounds, which is just the perfect size for cuddling with my humans! I had a home of my very own, but once I got fleas, they gave me up. Now that those itchy buggers are all gone, I'm ready to find my new humans who will love me always! I get along well with other kind doggos, and actually like to play with others, though sometimes I can be a bit pushy in my play style. Oh, and I love all humans. I'm a good boy and go potty outside, but foster mom put a belly band on me when I first got to her house until I learned the routine there, and I learned pretty fast! I enjoy going on walks with my people and do really well on a leash, but I like to get all the sniffies in, so I might do a little ziggy zag while we're walking along. Inside, my favorite activity is sitting on a chair by a window watching the world go by or taking daytime naps in my dog bed. In the evenings, I'll happily sit by you on the couch and snuggle while we watch a few episodes of your favorite shows until it's time to go to bed. I'd love to be able to sleep in the big bed with you at night so you can feel all the love I have to give you! Foster mom says I'm a pretty great little guy, and I hope I can show you how amazing I am soon! *Bobo is being fostered in Janesville, WI. Story
About Me: Name: Domino Breed (or best guess): Chihuahua mix Approximate Age: 6 yr Gender: Male Approximate Weight: 12 lb Adoption Fee: Reduced Fee $300 Requirements: Patient Adopter Why In Rescue: Owner passed away Profile: Domino has been with Bichon and Little Buddies for over 9 months as we worked with him to have him become comfortable with humans other than his owner.  When he was surrendered, we were told he is paranoid - and that does fit him.  He gets worried when he has a tag on his collar or when he is wearing a sweater.  He has stranger danger, so isn't going to want to be in a household where people are coming and going a lot or where he is expected to go visiting.  While he has some issues, he is a funny and loving guy to the people he has bonded with.  He will sit excitedly, waiting for one of his chosen ones to kneel down and open his kennel door so he can leap out and give a hug.  It is now time for him to venture out and find a family of his own.  While he lived with other dogs in his previous home, at the shelter there are a number of dogs he doesn't get along with - primarily males, so he may do best as an only dog or a female dog with a slow introduction.  Domino went for a short home visit with a volunteer to see how he would be in a home.  He had issues with other dogs in the house when the foster mom had food.  We are hoping for an only dog home for him to lessen the chance for issues if he decided to try to guard his person or his food.  He did warm up to visitors with some time, but will likely always need a slow introduction.   If you are looking to adopt a dog that really needs you, Domino may be that guy.  He is an athletic little guy who will climb up to the top of his kennel so he can look out and see what is going on.  If you can offer Domino a patient and loving home, please fill out the pre-adoption application and we can discuss more things about him. If interested in adoption, the first step is filling out the pre-adoption application at http://www.bichonrescues.com/pre-adoption-form-dog  If link isn't clickable, please copy/paste or visit http://www.bichonrescues.com. We do our best to evaluate the dogs while they are with us, but they sometimes act different in the shelter environment than they do in a home.  Many times we do not know the actual breed/mix or age of the dog, in that case we use our best guess as to breed and age.   We are located in Mukwonago, WI.  Adopters must come to us, we do not ship our dogs.  Please do not apply for a dog until you are ready to adopt.  Once an application is approved you will be notified by email to make an appointment to meet the dog.  All dogs are seen by appointment only. The adoption fee through Bichon and Little Buddies Rescue is $200 - $550 depending on the age of the dog, which includes Wi State Sales Tax.  Included in this fee is your new companion who will be spayed/neutered, have a current Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (as required by state law), current on age appropriate vaccinations, heartworm tested (if old enough) and started on preventative, microchipped, and given a general wormer.  Other medical needs will also have been taken care of, such as dentals and treating ear infections.  To assist you and your new pet in adjusting to life together, you may chose to take an 8 week age appropriate obedience training course at For Pet's Sake Dog Training in Mukwonago, WI for $75 (up to $230 value).  You may opt to take Puppy Kindergarten, Adult Beginners, or Small Dogs Big Hearts.  You must register for the class within 90 days of adoption for the reduced fee.  For more information on the classes visit www.forpetssake.cc  More important information: ***We are a Wisconsin based rescue and do not ship our pets.  If you are considering adoption you must be willing to drive to meet and adopt the pet, as well as bring the pet back to us if the adoption doesn't work.  We adopt primarily in WI and IL, but will consider applicants in MN, IA, and MI.*** ***Please do not set up an appointment to meet the animals until you are ready to take your pet home.  If the meeting results in a match, you can often take the dog/cat home the same day or within a couple days if the medical care hasn't been completed.  We are not able to hold pets for adopters beyond this time.  Thanks for understanding.*** ***While we hope all of our adoptions lead to permanent homes for the animals we place, sometimes things just don't work out.  We do have a 30 day trial period.  For the first 30 days, if you or Bichon and Little Buddies decide that the adoption isn't a good match for either the humans or the pet, the adoption fee will be refunded minus $75 within 30 days of the return of the dog.  Bichon and Little Buddies also requires adopters to return the pet to us at any time that they are unable or unwilling to care for the animal anymore.*** ***We do not show dogs without an appointment.  The first step in adoption is filling out the pre-adoption application at http://www.bichonrescues.com/pre-adoption-form-dog  Please do not call/email until AFTER you have filled out an application.*** Bichon and Little Buddies is a State Licensed Rescue # 268555-DS May 18, 2024, 7:51 pm
