Story
History: We welcomed a group recently from a partnering organization of ours, Villalobos Animal Rescue. A litter of 4 chihuahua/terrier mixes needed help specifically and arrived to rescue from this transport. They are under socialized and working hard on their trust and confidence in foster care. They seem to prefer women and men right now are scary so a patient and committed family will be important for each of them to work through this! Packer is undergoing heartworm treatment and is available as a foster to adopt through her treatment and recovery. A Note from the Foster: Packer (also called Penny) is a playful, energetic dog who loves people, other dogs, and even cats. She’s social, affectionate, and happiest when she’s included in whatever is going on around her. She’s a smart girl who enjoys food puzzles and enrichment activities. Packer is crate trained and does well in her kennel, though she prefers to be out with her people. She’s currently working on potty training and continuing to build good habits with consistency and routine. Packer is still young and learning appropriate boundaries, especially with older dogs, but she responds well to guidance. She enjoys toys, especially stuffed ones, and would do best in a home that can provide regular activity, playtime, and structure. If you’re looking for a friendly, active companion who enjoys engagement and interaction, Packer could be a great fit.

Story
History: Murray is a super sweet boy who arrived to rescue in desperate need of a second chance. He is such a handsome and striking boy who is ready to meet his forever home soon! A Note from the Foster: Shy at First, Snuggly Best Friend Forever — Meet Murray! Murray is a 6-month-old blue merle Chihuahua weighing just over 5 pounds of pure, adorable nugget. With his big eyes, unique coloring, and tiny size, he turns heads everywhere — and once he feels safe, he is all about being close to his people. Murray is a breeder-release puppy, so he’s still learning that the world (and humans) can be kind and predictable. He can be shy with new situations and quick movements, but he’s making progress every day. He will happily snuggle next to you on the couch for pets and naps, will crawl into your lap when you’re sitting at his level, and is starting to approach people on his own to say hello. If he’s in a “safe spot” like his dog bed, he’s comfortable letting people come up and give him gentle pets. This little guy enjoys playing with toys and even knows exactly where to find them in the toy bin. He loves other dogs and really takes note of what they do and what they trust. While he could be an only dog with patience and time, he would likely adjust faster and build confidence more quickly in a home with another friendly, confident dog. Murray is still working on potty training but does great on a consistent schedule. He sleeps overnight in a kennel in the bedroom and does wonderfully — quiet, clean, and dry. When left alone, he can feel anxious and doesn’t do as well in a kennel, but he has had much better success when gated in a safe, puppy-proofed area with his bed and toys. Murray is looking for a patient, loving home that understands shy dogs and will let him build confidence at his own pace. In return, he will give you the sweetest snuggles, tiny tail wags, and the absolute joy of watching a timid little peanut blossom into a confident best friend.

Story
Snapshot of Sarsaparilla: Size? Small but mi ghty! Activity Level? Easy to manage and full of snuggles (eventually) Noise Level? I bark when other dogs bark or to alert you that something is happening. Good with Dogs? Yes Good with Cats? Yes Good with Kids? Sort of. I live with kids currently but I will require no kids or VERY dog savvy kids and parents.  Good with Strangers? Ew, no. Potty Trained? Yes, when the weather cooperates Crate Trained? Yes, but I'm really good when left outside of my crate.  Shedding? Minimal Looking for a dog who will obey your every command? Keep scrolling. Still here? Good — you might just be worthy of Sarsaparilla. Sarsaparilla is a chihuahua with enough attitude to power a small city. She lives life her way, and any attempts to pick her up or tell her otherwise may result in a quick reminder (via teeth) that she’s not a fan of being manhandled. However, once you earn her trust (and her respect, which you will never demand, only be granted), she’ll graciously honor you with lap time... at her discretion. Moving her off your lap? Good luck. Cancel your plans. Sarsaparilla gets along just fine with dogs and cats — mostly because she has deemed them acceptable peasants in her kingdom. She’s living with young kids currently, but trust us when we say she’s dog savvy and so are they. In her ideal world, she’d be queen of an adult-only castle or maybe one with extremely dog-savvy older kids who understand the importance of personal space and consent. Housebreaking? She's got it mostly mastered — when the weather cooperates. If it's rainy or snowy, however, you might find a little "oops" inside. After all, Sarsaparilla is a firm believer that queens should not suffer soggy paws or chilly breezes. Leaving the house? Not her vibe. Sarsaparilla’s dream is to live her best life indoors forever, venturing only into a fenced yard when absolutely necessary before promptly returning to her throne (aka your couch). She kennels if asked nicely, but honestly, she does great free-roaming — mostly lounging luxuriously while giving the other crated dogs a smug side-eye. Important note: We’ll need to do a virtual meet-and-greet first. If you meet her in person right away, all you’ll see is her spicy, "don’t touch me" side — and while that is part of her charm, her true personality shines much brighter once she’s comfortable. If you're ready to serve (er, adopt) a tiny but mighty monarch who demands respect, gives love on her terms, and will keep you laughing daily with her larger-than-life personality, Sarsaparilla is ready to grace your home with her presence. Long live the queen. Sarsaparilla is spayed, microchipped, and current on vaccinations appropriate for her age. CLEO | 8 years old | 10-pounds*Alright, STOP. Collaborate and listen…She cute but she is expensive.Cleo will need prescription food and medication for the remainder of her life. Still interested? Read on!—--Straight from her foster’s mouth to your ears.. erhmm.. eyes.. learn more about Cleo directly from the source! They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend.. And you better have a lot of them. To sell. To pay for her vet care.Haha! Just kidding! *looks around* Kind of..Cleo has a condition called protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) caused by irritable bowel disease. She loses proteins from her bloodstream into her GI tract faster than her body can replenish them and her medical management helps regulate this condition.Cleo’s daily life is unaffected by this and she does your everyday dog things. The only addition is giving her medication (pills) with her morning and evening meals which she takes without problem.Still interested? Then you’re ready to hear our secret..—--Cleo is a GEM. A truly one-of-a-kind companion. So without further ado, here’s what you need to know about Cleo!Extremely smart. Eats her own poop. In a glass-half-full kind of world, you could consider her a self-poop picker-upper. (But really, you are going to have to go out in those subzero temps and pick up her poop before she does.)She is well potty trained but her medications/condition cause some accidents if she is unable to be let out after a certain amount of time. She understands cues quickly and even knows sit, shake, high five, and can catch her food mid-air!Farts can clear a room. They just get stronger. Rootin’ Tootin’ Cleo should be in the Guinness Book of Records or something.Teeters on being the fun police. Still fun.Cleo coexists with dogs big and small but can sometimes be a playtime hall monitor. That said, if she finds the right dog with the right playstyle, she has a good time playing chase and wrestling!Loves tug o’ war. Hates fetch. If you throw her toy, she’s going to look at you like what are you even doing. On a scale of one to barky, she’s about a five. While Cleo doesn’t bark all day long, she is going to warn you about car doors slamming, people talking, the general goings on of the world. And her bark be loud so shared walls may not be the best fit for her. She stops with some guidance pretty quickly.. usually.. sometimes..Loves food. Hates sharing. Cleo’s favorite times of the day are, hands down, breakfast and dinner. And she’s got that only child syndrome (I can say that, I’m an only child) where everything is hers. Her food. Her toys. Your food. All hers. And she will tell anyone who needs to know.Supposedly a Chihuahua/Pug mix. Definitely just as needy. Pug parents, am I right? Cleo will climb on your lap, push her way to your hands, and really doesn’t care if she’s stepping on another dog to get to the top. We mean that figuratively. Well.. except for those times when she’s literally walking over a dog to get to you.Likes to give kisses. Licks everything. Literally everything.. the couch, the floor, the carpet, the coffee table, your clothes, and your face.Cleo is great with kids of all ages but it’s probably best that she live in a home with teens or no kids on account of how much she loves food. Because she has PLE, Cleo needs to be on a restricted diet and can’t be catching scraps or snagging food from those little hands. Because she would. She totally would. This girl’s personality is a great balance of play and chill, and she walks so well on a leash.. when it’s actually warm out.. A lap dog through and through, Cleo wants to be snuggled in with you, often under a blanket (Chihuahua parents, you get it). She's content to snooze on the couch or a dog bed when you're gone and she can fit into any social situation.Cleo is one of the best dogs out there and whoever has the privilege of adopting her is going to know love (and toots) beyond measure!—--*Opening Line Credit: Vanilla Ice - “Ice Ice Baby”Cleo came to Pet Haven Rescue with a severe case of PLE. Her levels are back to normal with the help of food and medication management.More on protein-losing enteropathy (PLE): https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/proteinlosing-enteropathy-ple-in-dogs—--If you are interested in this dog, fill out an application at this link to get the ball rolling: https://pethavenmn.org/adopt/adoptable-dogs/dog-adoption-application/The adoption fee is $250. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

Story
Hi there, I’m Hugo! I’m a 4-year-old chihuahua, and I come as a bonded pair with my brother, Kobe. We’ve been together our whole lives, and I’m not about to let him go anywhere without me.Between the two of us, I’m the thicker, rounder, snack-loving sibling. I’ve been told I could use a little help getting fit again, and honestly, I’m ready for it. A few extra walks and a family who cheers me on sounds perfect.I love people and I warm up quickly, but Kobe and I both get a bit jealous around very young children, so we’re hoping for a home without little ones. Somewhere calm, cozy, and full of love would be just right for us.If you’re looking for a pair of loyal, goofy, affectionate companions, we’d love to meet you.
