Meet Franco: A Sweet Soul Finally Getting the Life He Deserves For the first four years of his life, Franco knew little more than loneliness because honestly he was treated like a 'junkyard dog' who was supposed to protect a terrible plot of land that a tire tread place existed. As a puppy, he was given to a man who lived in a shed beside a tire service company's concrete parking lot. Instead of growing up as a beloved family companion, Franco spent his life chained to a fence as a 'guard dog.' Ironically, this gentle boy is a Cocker Spaniel mix—not exactly the fierce watchdog anyone would expect. He had no grass beneath his feet, very little shade beyond a worn-out doghouse, no protection from the weather, and almost no affection. He wasn't even given a name—he was simply called 'Dog.' A dedicated Critter Cavalry Rescue volunteer spent months trying to convince his owner to let Franco go, even offering to pay for him. At last, the man agreed, and Franco was finally freed from the only life he had ever known. Today, Franco is beginning a whole new chapter. He has received veterinary care for the first time, enjoyed a much-needed bath and grooming, and now proudly wears the handsome red-and-white coat that will look even more beautiful once his fur grows back after all the painful mats were removed. He tested positive for heartworms, but he's already received treatment and a full recovery is in place.> See our video of Franco that shows him experiencing life inside a home for the very first time. He's currently wearing a belly band while he learns his house manners, and he is soaking up every new experience. In just one day, he learned commands like 'sit,' 'leave it,' and 'no.' He clearly wants to please his people and is eager to learn. Franco is now crate trained, although he may be a little vocal at first. He lives with both large and small dogs in his foster home. At 4 years, he weighs 42 pounds and is healthy overall. His previous owner did at least keep him well fed. We're not sure how Franco would do with cats, as he did try to chase stray cats while he was chained outside. What we do know is that Franco absolutely loves affection. He gives the sweetest kisses, happily buries his head in your lap, and is making up for four years without the love every dog deserves. Franco has waited four long years for a second chance. Now he's ready for a family that will give him the love, patience, and forever home he's always deserved. I have been in a foster home, and I am ready for my new home! I have been working on my commands and learning my adult dog skills, but I am still all puppy. Watch my videos linked below. My leg has healed, and you can see it does not slow me down. As I get older, I may need some arthritis medication, but the more exercise I get now, the better it will be when I am older. I need a yard to run around, long walks, playtime, and help continuing my transition from puppy to adult dog. MY ORIGINAL INTAKE INFORMATION: Hi Everyone! My name is Freckles, and I just arrived at CSAC. I was rescued from a puppy mill. I have spent my life in a barn, a shed or a cage. The CSAC volunteer says that I am very sweet, calm and should come out of my shell quickly. CSAC was told that I am blind in one eye, but the veterinarian says that I am blind in both eyes. No one can tell the difference. I get along just fine. I do have a grade 4 of 6 heart murmur. The best home for me has people who have dog experience who can help with my training and acclimating to the outside world. The people in my new home should be able to teach me the skills I need to be a great pet: walking on a lead, house training, and socializing. Right now, I am in the caring hands of one of the great Vets that work with CSAC. They are checking me out and making sure I am healthy. My owner was moving and could not take me with her so she asked CSAC to help find me a new home. I am a special needs dog. I will walk and run in circles. The best guess is that I was born this way. If I am really focusing on something, I can walk in a straight line. When I am anxious or excited, I will circle. I have glaucoma. My right eye had to be removed, and I get drops in my left eye. I am house trained and crate trained. I have lived with cats but not other dogs. I love to play with toys, swim and explore. I should be in a home with a fenced in yard because I could trip up people with a leash. Right now, I am in the caring hands of one of the great Vets that work with the CSAC. Meet Fitz. One look at Fitz's smile and you'll understand why everyone falls in love with him. This 9-year-old Spaniel mix may only have one eye, but don't tell him that. He's far too busy leading neighborhood walks like the self-appointed mayor, curling up in the nearest lap, and making sure his favorite person never has to wonder where he is. Fitz is the definition of a velcro dogcalm, adaptable, and happiest when he's close to the people he loves. His foster describes him as wonderfully easygoing, with a smile that lights up the whole house. He does the cutest little tap dance when it's time for a walk, proudly takes the lead on his neighborhood adventures, and at the end of the day, all he wants is a soft bed with high sides and someone to snuggle beside. While he can be a little cautious around men at first, he warms up with patience and kindness. Fitz lost one of his eyes before coming to rescue, and his remaining eye will need to be monitored over time, but it isn't causing him any trouble right now. He doesn't let his limited vision slow him down one bit. Like many dogs who form deep bonds, Fitz can become protective of his favorite person. While he gets along well with other dogs most of the time, he has occasionally told a resident dog to back off when he felt his special relationship with his human was being interrupted. Because of this, he'd do best either as an only dog or with an experienced adopter who understands how to manage introductions, attention, and shared space. The good news? Fitz actually enjoys his crate and settles into it happily when left alone or when a little separation is needed. Fitz isn't looking for perfection. He's looking for his person. The one he'll follow from room to room, greet with that unforgettable grin, and love with his whole heart. If you're looking for a loyal companion who will happily join you for walks and then spend the rest of the evening curled up beside you, Fitz is ready to be your shadow.
