Handsome Duke was found as a stray in Stanislaus County with a prong collar embedded into his neck. He was understandably nervous with handling and with these two strikes against him he was placed on the euthanasia list. As a rescue we were allowed to take him on and we are so glad we did. Given his condition both physically and mentally due to neglect, he was initially thought to be a senior, but as Duke has gotten comfortable we are fairly certain that isn't the case. We think Duke is closer to 4 years old. He has become quite the love while he has been at Lily’s Legacy. His neck has healed nicely, and he is learning to trust in leaps and bounds. Duke seems to really enjoy the company of people and is very eager to please. He is also calm around other dogs once they meet, but he can be reactive when he sees them on leash. We know Duke just wants to play so bad, but he will need proper introduction with other dogs. Duke is appropriate with small dogs and the previous shelter reported he is also good with cats. Duke will need a home that will meet his needs both mental and physical. Walks, hikes and some fun puzzle toys will go a long way with Duke. He is highly food motivated and is so ready to have someone work with him on obedience. We are enjoying watching Duke begin to shine like the diamond he truly is. He is going to make someone a wonderful and loyal companion.

Manny has been here for over a year. He wishes to begin the new year in a new home. If you can't adopt, please share this with your friends and have them share and so on.... If you are looking for a furry companion, one who will go with you anywhere, who loves car rides and outdoor adventures, who isn't going to run off away from you, one who will be forever loyal and obedient, then Manny is your boy !! He's not too big and not too small, he's just perfect. This boy is amazingly intelligent. All he wants to do is please you and love you. We have been working with Manny and his fear of new people for the past year. He has made amazing progress. As long as he is introduced to new people in a calm environment with a treat in hand, he welcomes you. Once he feels this person is not a threat he is very friendly. He must trust his person enough to know he will not be introduced to danger. Manny is very affectionate and loves to cuddle. He is a loyal, devoted companion and will protect your home and property. He is very obedient. Manny is an amazing dog, he just needs that certain someone and the right environment in order to manage his behavior. Manny was surrendered because he was being tormented by his neighbor’s dogs and the neighbor. They would run sticks along the fence encouraging him to fence fight then spray him with the hose and scare him off. Eventually, he became very fearful, not wanting to go in his backyard. He was becoming fearful of noises and basically everything. His owner didn’t want him to go through this anymore and decided to have him re-homed. The behavior of the neighbor and their dogs is why he developed this fear and trust issue. Being surrendered brought on more fear and trust issues. He didn’t know who was safe and who was not. His fear became fear aggression. New people terrified him so he reacted the only way he knew how and that was to lunge and bark at people. Dogs communicate differently than humans and this was Manny’s way of communicating his fear. Manny needs someone he completely trusts. Once this trust has been built he can then be introduced to new people and new surroundings. Manny needs a person with dog experience who understands his fear. We suggest Manny have his own place to go to if visitors come over. He would love his own " Dog Cave". Manny does not think cats should exist, so no cats in the home. We recommend no small children, as well. Manny is an amazing companion. At the end of the day, he loves to curl up on the couch and cuddle and enjoy a good book or a movieI. As long as he has you by his side, he is happy.
