Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most of the dogs, we are only guessing at the predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label. We expect that all adopted dogs will enroll in a formal dog training class with their new owners. Obedience and training classes are an excellent way to learn more about your newly adopted dog, gain handling and training experience, and improve your relationship with your pet.

Story
Meet Sammy! She is an absolute saint of a dog and is ready for a new chapter in her life. Sammy arrived at WARL as a dog abandoned in Worcester. Her story began with uncertainty and questions. Sammy answered all of those questions and has shown us nothing but gentleness and resilience. Through medical challenges and big life changes, Sammy has remained soft, trusting, and quietly devoted to the people around her. She is the kind of companion whose presence alone brings a sense of calm.Ten Things We Love About Sammy:1. Lovey and demure with everyone she meets2. Exceptionally calm around other dogs — true grace3. Rides in the car like a dream, perfect travel companion4. A snow dog through and through5. Kids? Yes!6. Perfectly patient for baths and grooming7. Polite, easy leash manners8. Would shine at dog-friendly cafés and breweries if her new family enjoys those type of outings9. Her calm, sweet energy10. Her resilience through every medical challengeSammy does have a unique medical condition that can cause some incontinence, particularly in the evenings. Our team is happy to speak with potential adopters about management options, and we are open to creative housing situations to help accommodate her needs. What Sammy gives in return is immeasurable. WARL vet team provided Sammy with a surgery that will make her much more comfortable. If you are interested in adopting Sammy, please come to the shelter on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 12-4pm. If you have questions about her medical needs, or are unable to come during our walk in hours, email dogs@worcesterarl.org to see what other times may be available by appointment.

Story
Meet Nala ❄️🐾 Currently in foster, Nala is showing off just how amazing of a young pup she is—sweet, social, and full of love. She’s a big, beautiful girl with an even bigger heart, and she truly lights up when she’s with her people. Sit down for a moment and you may find her happily rolling over for belly rubs… and asking for more the second you stop! Nala is playful and dog-friendly—she loves to wrestle, play tug, and chase the ball with her foster dog siblings (fair warning: she can be a little toy thief when she’s having fun). She’s also been doing well with the teens in her foster home and greets both humans and dogs with cheerful kisses. And yes… she experienced her very first snow and became instantly obsessed. Snowy zoomies, happy hops, and nonstop tail wags have been the highlight of her winter days. She’s smart, very food-motivated, and already knows “sit.” With treats and consistency, she’s going to thrive with continued training. She’s also doing great with crating at night and for short periods when her foster family heads out. Nala prefers being near her people (and other dogs), so a home where she won’t be left alone for long stretches would be ideal. She’s already working on good manners—like calmly sitting and waiting for her food bowl—and she’s making progress with potty training, improving more each day with praise and rewards. If you’re looking for a gorgeous, affectionate, playful companion who’s ready to learn and loves being part of the action, Nala is ready to snow her way straight into your heart. ❄️💙
