Meet Millerl! He is the sweetest boyl! He is a 2 year old that was rescued from a breeding farm before heading to a dog meat farm in South Korea.  We have partners we work with there that pull these dogs from the worst horrors imaginable.  Many of these dogs start off in horiffic puppy mill type facilities on tiny rabbit cage size wire crates in complete filth.  If they are not sold at 6 or 8 weeks then they either stay for a couple years to be used to breed more and then are sold off to the meat trade, or they are sold off right away.  Jindo's and Tosa's are the most common meat type dogs, and are very commonly bred specifically for their meat and the meat farms also act as breeding farms until they reach a good age and weight. South Korea is one of the only countries that actually farms dogs for their meat.   Restaurants will serve a dish called " bosintang ", which stands for "dog meat soup". Oreo is a female Poodle mix, 11 years old and weighs 8 lbs. The previous owners took her to the shelter because they apparently could not take financial care of a ‘visually impaired’ dog. Oreo was terrified in the shelter and missed her family and was going to be euthanized for space due to her age. One of our volunteers rescued her shortly before this could happen. Oreo is completely blind but she is able to get around her Foster Dad’s house without any issues. She needs a calm, quiet household where she can live out her retirement and be loved. Story
Simmba has been waiting for his forever home for over a year now at Shelter Hope. Simmba is a 3 y/o and 13 lb Poodle mix who was surrendered the day after Christmas 2024. Before that, he lived only outdoors and received less attention as his family’s children grew older. Despite this, Simmba has a huge heart and blossoms with patience, consistency, and kindness. Simmba loves fetch, squeaky toys, and zooming or rolling through the grass, as well as soaking up the sun on his favorite bench. Indoors, he keeps his lamby toy close, happily offers enthusiastic face kisses, and adores cuddles, belly rubs, and simply being near his people. He also respects boundaries and will retreat to his bed or “sanctuary” when asked. His foster tells us he seems fully potty trained, food-motivated, and already knows the “sit” command. Simmba can be protective and sometimes needs help navigating his big feelings (which is why he’s often called a “project dog”) but he bonds deeply and is incredibly loyal once trust is built. He does have some skin allergies, possibly food-related, and currently wears a cone to prevent licking, though it doesn’t slow down his playful, quirky personality. He does best in a calm, low-chaos environment, where he can grow more confident and relaxed. His foster is actively socializing him with new people and other dogs, and he’s making excellent progress. With his fun-loving nature, Simmba could do well as an only dog or with another small, friendly, playful female dog as a companion. What he truly needs is a home without kids who is willing to give him the time and understanding he’s waited so long for. Simmba has so much love to give. Ari was rescued from the shelter on the day he was supposed to be euthanized. He is a special kid who just needs to be understood. He doesn't really know how to play with dogs, but tries in his weird way. Ari is 10 years old, 12lb, has and old back leg injury that didn't heal properly. He is on Prozac to help him with his anxiety and is doing well. Older kids, probably no cats, good with mellow non reactive dogs.
