✨Meet Stella!✨ Stella is a 2-month old Miniature Poodle/Bernese Mountain Dog mix who came into us as a surrender from a commercial breeding facility (aka Puppy Mill) in Lancaster County. She is blind in one eye due to a bite that happened when she was with the breeder. The eye cannot be repaired, but is currently being treated to heal the bite. She may need the eye removed in the future, but the ophthalmologist believes it is best to leave it at this point in time! Puppy mills are producing puppies at alarmingly high rates. It is easier for them to give up puppies who are not easily sold/don’t sell as they usually have multiple litters of puppies for sale at the same time. Adopting a puppy mill survivor is life-changing—for you and them. For these dogs, everything is new and often overwhelming: people, houses, stairs, leashes, food bowls, collars, toys, TVs, ovens, doorways, pavement…the list goes on. They need adopters who can move slowly, be patient, keep expectations reasonable, and provide the understanding and tools they need to grow into happy, confident companions. Patience, positive reinforcement, and understanding are key! With the right guidance, puppy mill survivors can blossom into well-socialized, joyful dog- so our goal is always to ensure every adopter is fully prepared to give them the life and environment they need to truly thrive! Stella is a sweet but shy puppy who will require a family up to the task of providing her the ample physical/mental exercise and training that all puppies require. Meet Liberty. Liberty is a 5 year old 65 lbs Bernese mountain dog/poodle mix that Logan’s rescued from a commercial breeding kennel. She is a magnificent dog with a few areas needing work. She has only had a couple of potty accidents so is almost housebroken. She is almost crate trained but will need help going in. We feed her in the crate(all our volunteers do that with their fosters). Liberty is full of energy and plays wonderfully with our lab. She understands the commands NO and LEAVE IT but needs work on teaching her to sit with her doodle personality energy. Liberty is good with the cat in the foster’s home. Liberty is still very skittish as most puppy mill dogs have never been exposed to noises common in a home and neighborhood. She even reacted to pulling a tissue from a box. But she is getting used to more things every day in her foster home. She will do best in a home with another friendly dog to help show her the ropes. She is currently in a foster home with a fenced in yard and does better with that as she is still learning what walking on a leash is all about. Liberty is a super sweet and loving dog that would love a forever home that is calm and patient to help her learn to enjoy house dog life. Liberty is now spayed, up to date with vaccines and microchipped. She tested negative for heartworm and has been started on monthly heartworm prevention. Her adoption fee is $400.00. SADIE was adopted from us as a pup and, sadly, needs to find a “retirement” home as their living arrangements are changing and Sadie will not be able to accompany them. Sadie is now almost a 7 year old Bernese Mountain Dog (DOB 4/29/2019) she is located in NJ so you must travel for the first meet and greet. Here is a writeup from her current family: Below are key notes on Sadie: - She is a very loving and sweet dog once she is comfortable in her surroundings. - It became apparent to us shortly after adopting her in 2019 that she had a real fear/anxiety problem. We took her to a behaviorist who diagnosed her with 'World Fear', which is common in Berners and basically means she's prone to fear. We do have prescription medicine to treat this (BusPirone and Gabapentin) that we give her twice daily. - If she is rehomed through CompAnimals, we would suggest a house that does not have kids. Because of the above World Fear, she becomes very fearful of sudden changes in her environment (i.e. kids running around, balls/toys moving around). She's not aggressive in these situations and chooses to run away to another room or hide. - We would recommend a home that has some experience with dogs and is willing to be patient with her fear. While we found the right medicine for her, I do believe she will be anxious and/or fearful of a new home for the first couple of weeks. After she's comfortable, she will be the big sweetheart Berner she is. We would love a home with Bernese or similar breed experience. There will be a rehoming/adoption fee of $150. Her parents have done a wonderful job with her vetting and excellent vet reference is a must. Home visit required.
